About the Author
Dr. Charles F. Levinthal is Chair of the Department of Psychology and Professor of Psychology at Hofstra University, where he has taught and conducted research since 1971, having received his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Michigan. He is author of fifteen books, including Drugs, Behavior, and Modern Society, 7th ed. (2012), Drugs, Society, and Criminal Justice, 3rd ed. (2012), Point/Counterpoint: Opposing Perspectives on Issues of Drug Policy (2003), Introduction to Physiological Psychology, 3rd ed. (1990), and Messengers of Paradise: Opiates and the Brain (1988). Drugs, Behavior, and Modern Society has been published in Korean (2008), and Messengers of the Paradise: Opiates and the Brain has been published in Spanish (1989) and Japanese (1991). His present research interests include issues in substance abuse and dependence, clinical neuropsychology, and cognitive decision-making. Dr. Levinthal presented the Hofstra University Distinguished Faculty Lecture in 1987 and was voted by the graduating Class of 2003 as Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Dr. Levinthal was elected as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in 2010.

Great Value and Great Text!

I got this book for my undergrad degree. When I first started college, I purchased all my books which got very expensive. I then began renting my texts through the school and other websites. This semester I decided to check Amazon's rental program. I'm soooo glad I did because the prices can't be beat! The text came super fast, unlike the school bookstore which usually sells out of the rentals fairly quick and other sites who inform you the book is backordered after your class starts and after you were already expecting to receive the text, leaving you in a real bind. Amazon had the book to me in a matter of a few days and at a great price. I'm also enjoying the text itself. I find it to be very informative and easy to read. I often get bored with long readings in my classes but this text has really held my interest and I'm eager to move on to read the next chapter. I will definitely be renting all my texts from Amazon hereafter!

Hands on review of textbook.

This text is very user-friendly. It presents information and data in a comprehensible and digestible way. The vocabulary is appropriate to the text, and the diagrams, charts, and other illustrations serve to reinforce the data and are not distracting. I have found this book to present an organized picture of a very chaotic and often confusing topic. I am especially pleased at the ease of comprehension as I am using this book for an on-line class and do not have the benefit of lecture to reinforce concepts. The only drawback to the loose-leaf format of this text is that the pages are thinner and feel "weaker" than those in a traditionally bound book. Otherwise, being able to carry and read only the chapter needed instead of the entire book is a treat.

A little more simple than I needed, but great for quick review and memorization

This book is very good. It was a bit simple for my needs, but the format was very helpful and allowed me to solidify the memorization of the expanded basics using the workbook, coloring and text.

The coloring is much simpler than some of the other books out there--which I liked. I prefer this format to color in over the more detailed ones where I felt all I did was search to find the right color for the right spot versus this book where I could color and concentrate on studying the part focused on.

Overall, I found this very useful and although it didn't have all the detail I needed, it did have plenty jammed into the pages. I found it to be a very useful tool.

In The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn, Eric Ives provides the most detailed and convincing portrait we have of the queen. He reveals a person of intellect with a passion for the new culture of the Renaissance, a woman who made her way in a man’s world by force of education and personality. She played a powerful and independent role in the faction-ridden court of Henry VIII and the unceasing struggle for royal favour that was Tudor politics. The consequences can still be detected today. Indeed, Ives shows that it was precisely because Anne was a powerful figure in her own right that it needed a coup to bring her down. She had to be stopped – even by a lie.

About the Author
Eric Ives is Emeritus Professor of English History at the University of Birmingham. Ives has written widely on Tudor history, the history of law, and on the development of modern higher education. In 2001 he was awarded an OBE for services to history and the University of Birmingham.

I am literally shocked seeing those comments of whom found this book 'impossible to read and interpret'. I'm not even a native english speaker maybe not even an 'advanced leaner' but I had no problem whatsoever understanding this book. Besides, as it was said before this book is based on probably the best and the most objective research of anne boleyn. I think the only part I got confused was why the Tudor tradition of arrest first and interrogate later, was not applied regarding the case of anne boleyn, and how a husband who writes in the hopes of 'heirs male' by his 'most dearly and entirely beloved wife' on 24th of april and gives his consent to a commision of 'oyer and terminer' on 27th. But I dismiss it since I'm not a native speaker so it could be that I'm the problem with the reading, not the author. Some points Ives' made I believe are crucial corcerning the case of anne boleyn; such as incredibility of most of chapuys' remarks about her married life with the king, her miscarriage of a so-called 'shapeless mass of flesh' and his allegation that the king had confessed that 'he was bewitched by her'. Most of the authors I've read so far claim such unbelievable things about anne boleyn with no basis other than chapuys' letters. I don't believe this kind of research is anything but trash, literally. Another crucial point is the Cromwell factor. And I appreciated understading gradually of why he wanted to get rid of the queen to save his own head and pocket for a foreseeable future and how did he manage to succeeded in his notorious coup. According to Ives, cromwell was the one to blame, not the king. But how a man who shows signs of how much he loves and wants to keep his wife changed his mind and truly believed these accusations rapidly is a mystery. Ives implies that oncerning henry, changing his mind in 24 hours is quite possible. Ives also rebukes some myths and gets the reader have a sigh of relief about long-repeated stories such as henry was long tired of his second wife and after the miscarriage of a son in january 1536 he was already trying to find a way to get rid of her. This contradicts with his unwillingles to embrace an imperial alliance in the hope that charles v may find himself vulnerable in the possibility of an anglo-french alliance at last and accept anne as queen unconditionally, and many such details. And he regards the birth of elizabeth as a sigh of relief for henry and not a disappoinment as many historians suggests, since it probably assured henry that he can after all beget children after years of barenness. I personally believe that Ives portrayal of anne boleyn is by far the most objective one. Apparently, for her part, she died for no reason whatsoever. Lack of a son was her greatest vulnerability, yet without that inconceivable coup which cromwell staged with mary's supporters, including the seymour faction, her place as queen and the boleyn faction would stay secured. Since it is obvious that anne was more fertile than katherine (she concieved at three times-maybe more, if true as suggested by other scholars- in a row in just three years, while katherine conceived 6 times in 15 years time when she was sexually active with the king before he ceased trying to make her pregnant) and expected to produce (or conceive) more, as Ives argues. And I personally mourn at such a nasty end for a woman like anne boleyn. She was neither a saint, nor a witch, or a malicious woman who seeks nothing but her own profit, but just likesome other women of her time, a victim of an androcentric period, where the struggle of women to survive is hard, but to undermine them is so simple and easy. Had she lived, I can't even imagine how different things would be, it would be for the better of the reformation in england i guess, and many horrible changes in henry's personality.

Great Book about a women that has influenced much but given very little credit.

Well written and comprehensive book about a person that is usually demonized by many. It puts fourth a more comprehensive understanding of her personality. The author also does a good job in explaining her life before becoming part of the Tudor court. The book also provides some fleshing out the different personalities that came in and out of her life. I definitely recommend this book.

An excellent and thorough biography.

The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn is a biography of one of the most controversial women in history. The book concentrates not only on Anne Boleyn the mistress and later queen consort, but also on the woman herself. The book begins with a brief history of the Boleyn family and Thomas Boleyn's early years at court. The book also focuses a great deal on Margaret of Austria and the french court's influence on Anne's education, taste in art, books, and more importantly her success as a courtier.

This will book will be extremely satisfying to Anne Boleyn sympathizers. Eric Ives cleverly isolates various myths and allegations against Anne Boleyn and rips them to shreds with a plethora of contradicting evidence. Allow me to give you an example. I cannot tell you how much I hate to hear about the infamous sixth finger. Even some of my favorite Boleyn books makes references to it. Ives traces the beginnings of what he calls "the monster legend" to Nicolas Sander who was born in 1527 and most certainly was not a contemporary to be making such "accurate" descriptions of Anne. Mr Ives believes Anne probably had some minor nail deformation, but most certainly not a sixth finger or a monstrous goiter on the neck. This is just one example of the many unkind myths surrounding the tragic second wife of Henry VIII that Ives blows apart. There are far more serious ones, especially concerning the allegations of Anne's adultery, who Ives traces back to Thomas Cromwell.

The book also contains many gorgeous illustrations, which include several illuminated manuscripts that once belonged to Anne. Dr Ives is certain Anne had a certain interest in art and antiques, although he states it would be inaccurate to see her as "Renaissance patron of the arts". He certainly makes a convincing argument for linking Hans Holbein the younger's portrait, Ambassadors', Jean de Dinteville and George de Selve, to Anne Boleyn's forthcoming coronation.

No matter how many biographies you have read or haven't read, read The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn. The book is extremely readable and will certainly be a page turner for anyone fascinated with Anne Boleyn!

This is one of the best textbooks that I've had to read for a class. Very easy to read and understand concepts. I have actually read the chapters rather than skim through them. I even read ahead to take quizzes in my class.

Very informative and interesting!

I have learned tons of stuff from this book. The book does a really nice job of organizing every detail. I can say already that it is a HARD read, but I guess a college book should be. I had to read some pages twice, look up some words in the dictionary, and sometimes re read the chapter just to get the information synced. I really liked the information it has taught me about diversity, unions, laws, and so on. It is very valuable information that any business owner should defiantly know.

I was worried that this would book would be somehow inferior or an incomplete version of the more expensive 7th Edition of the "real" book required for my class. As far as I can tell, it's the same book. This graduate student is very pleased.
