I got an A in Hydraulics
By Natalya S. Polishchuk
The outline was a handy, well-organized supplemental text that helped because we were using a really poor textbook. The worked problems were especially useful, but the summaries were clear, too.

Hinduism in Modern Indonesia (Curzon in Association With Iias, 8), by Martin Ramstedt

This book provides new data and perspectives on the development of 'world religion' in post-colonial societies through an analysis of the development of 'Hinduism' in various parts of Indonesia from the early twentieth century to the present. This development has been largely driven by the religious and cultural policy of the Indonesian central government, although the process began during the colonial period as an indigenous response to the introduction of modernity.

Read it like a single novel
By Amazon Customer
"The Vampire Genevieve" is an omnibus collections of Kim Newman's 4 Warhammer books. The title is actually misleading. Genevieve in not the dominant character in any of the stories in the volume and is completely absent from a number of them. The title is mostly for marketing: implying that the main character is a sexy, beautiful butt-kicking vampire helps sell books to the targeted readers, I guess.

Having said that, the book is quite good. It definitely deserves a much wider audience than the Warhammer readership it's targeted to. If you have read any of Newman's other books and liked them, you'll definitely have a lot of fun with this volume.

The contents of the volume are as follows:

Drachenfels (novel)
-- Prologue: 25 Years Ago
-- Acts 1-5
-- Epilogue: Envoi

Genevieve Undead (3 novellas)
-- Part 1. Stage Blood
-- Part 2. The Cold Stark House
-- Part 3. Unicorn Ivory

Beasts in Velvet (novel)

Silver Nails (5 short stories/novellas)
-- Red Thirst
-- No Gold in the Grey Mountains
-- The Ignorant Armies
-- The Warhawk
-- The Ibby the Fish Factor

In this book, there are various stories thrown together which happening at differnt times in the internal chronology. Here is my suggestion: read the stories in the order of the internal chronolgy rather than the order in the book. If you do this, it actually kind of hangs together and kind of feels like a single sprawling novel with various subplots rather than just bunch of loosely-connected stories.

The following is the order that the events happen in the volume:

-- Drachenfels: Prologue: 25 Years Ago
-- Silver Nails: Red Thirst
-- Silver Nails: No Gold in the Grey Mountains
-- Drachenfels: Acts 1-5
-- Drachenfels: Epilogue: Envoi
-- Silver Nails: The Ignorant Armies
-- Beasts in Velvet
-- Genevieve Undead: Part 1. Stage Blood
-- Silver Nails: The Warhawk
-- Genevieve Undead: Part 2. The Cold Stark House
-- Genevieve Undead: Part 3. Unicorn Ivory
-- Silver Nails: The Ibby the Fish Factor

[ As a side note: Be aware that if you've read Newman's Diogenes Club stories or Anno Dracula novels, you may be dissappointed with the Genevieve portrayed here. The versions of Genevieve Dieudonne in those other works comes accross as very worldly and confident -- a strong and distinctive character. I found the Warhammer-universe Genevieve in this book actually rather passive most of the time and doesn't particularly stand out a distinctive personality. But maybe others will disagree with me... ]

Vampire stories without any real vampirism in them
By KSABER
"The Vampire Genevieve" is a collection of novels and stories written by Kim Newman, the author of "Anno Dracula", "Bloodred Baron" and "Dracula Cha Cha Cha". It is set in the Old World, the setting of Warhammer Fantasy tabletop games.

When it comes to writing modern vampire tales, mister Newman deserves the title of grandmaster. His style is both ornate and easy to read, his plots are complex and engaging, and his ironic humor and real-life references add an unique flavor to his works that I can describe only as "Newmaneskue". Perhaps the most glaring thing about mister Newman's writing is his expert use of flamboyant, deliberately silly characters. "The Vampire Genevieve" is full of such personas and, depending on your disposition, each can be viewed as either lovable or absurd. The writer knows this, and offers no apology. In other words, he doesn't explain the joke - you either get it, or you don't.

Drachenfels - 4 Stars - As the author himself states in the introduction, Drachenfels is a deconstruction of that most classical of tales; a hero and his darling embark on an epic quest to destroy an evil sorcerer. Except that the entire quest is just a prologue, and the main story deals with what happens twenty five years later, when the said hero commissions a theatric adaptation of his epic deed. The best part of the novel lies in its delightfully one-sided and deliberately self-parodying characters. Not for a moment do we believe that real human beings can be as self-loving as Detlef Sierck, as mindlessly mean as Lilli Nissen, as villainous as Constant Drachenfels, or as noire as Anton Veidt. Yet they work so well within the context of the story that we can't help but enjoy every moment we spend with them. While above-average, Drachenfels is not a perfect novel. Its shortcomings lie in the wrong presentation of the setting (vampires and even chaos mutants are allowed to live unopposed in human cities), as well as a sudden decline in Detlef Sierck's personality traits - about halfway into the book, he stops being a lovable egomaniac and becomes more-or-less faceless. Another problem is the presentation of Genevieve's vampirism and its overall significance (more on that later).

Genevieve Undead - 4 Stars - This is a collection of three novellas; "Stage Blood", "The Cold Stark House" and "Unicorn Ivory".

"Stage Blood" is a sequel to "Drachenfels". It tells the tale of the Great Enchanter's posthumous revenge on Genevieve and Detlef. It's a great story; well thought out, fast paced and very entertaining. It is dominated by the villain (an authentically soulless being) and its polar opposite - the trapdoor demon. Although Detlef's narcissism is still nowhere to be found, his character has gained much depth, going a long way towards making the reader care about him. I disliked the entire "Genevieve's influence creating a darkness in Detlef's soul" theme - I felt it was convulsed and rushed.

,,The Cold Stark House" is a weird tale about a cursed manor and its insane inhabitants. Throughout the novella, you'll be wondering what the hell is going on, until the truth is revealed and all the crazy events start to make sense. The story was too drawn out for my taste, often bombarding the reader with unimportant names, titles and backgrounds. Also, why Genevieve bothers rescuing a pair of complete strangers (she never even talked to either one of them) is a mystery.

"Unicorn Ivory" is the shortest of the three novellas. Genevieve is blackmailed into agreeing to assassinate a powerful graf and his son. In order to make their deaths appear accidental, she infiltrates their household and is soon pulled into a web of lies and family secrets.

[ SPOILERS START HERE ]The problem with "Unicorn Ivory" is that its main villain isn't nearly as evil as the writer is trying to make him. Okay, graf Rudiger loves to hunt for fun and acts semi-harsh to his son - that's bad by 21st century standards, but it was really nothing out of the ordinary in ancient times. He supposedly hates women and has killed his wife because she cheated on him with his best friend - this should make us hate him, but it doesn't. The thing is, the graf still keeps his wife's portrait in his dining hall and all his mistresses resemble her - meaning that the graf truly loved his wife and probably still does. Thus, he becomes a tragic, pitiable villain whose only real crime was an impulsive act of a cheated lover, rather then cold blooded murder. That the graf can forgive his friend, and then go on to raise his friend's bastard son as his own, shows he has a lot more heart then we're pushed to believe. The writer obviously wants us to loathe Rudiger, going so far as to turn him into a complete monster that kills its best friend because of a vague assumption (this part of the story is both rushed and far-fetched - basically, Rudiger manages to fetch the trophy horn, kill two people in a very messy way, and wipe the blood off himself before the extremely-fast Genevieve catches up with him). Overall, Rudiger feels like a complex antihero who has been transformed into a brainless villain for the sake of the plot. That Genevieve, who has had terrible things done to her by characters much worse then Rudiger, apparently hates the graf way more then she did Drachenfels is not only ridiculous, but contrary to her personality, too. [ SPOILERS END HERE ]

Beasts in Velvet - 4 Stars for the story, 1 Star for the false advertising - First off, this novel is not a vampire story. Genevieve has nothing whatsoever to do with the plot and only appears in a cameo. As such, "Beasts in Velvet" has no reason to be in a "The Vampire Genevieve" collection. It's just plain dishonest marketing.

That being said, "Beasts in Velvet" is an enjoyable, fast-paced mystery novel. A serial killer known as the Beast is on the loose, and evidence suggest he/she/it is an aristocrat. A group of revolutionists sparks a civil uprising in Altdorf, throwing the city into chaos during the "worst fog ever to fall on Altdorf". The murderer's identity managed to be both predictable (there are dead giveaways in the first chapter) and shocking (the killer's true nature WILL surprise you). Rosanna's scrying is an exotic and important part of the story - sadly, its efficiency varies depending on the needs of the plot [SPOILER - she can basically read people's minds and feel their emotions, and yet she spends an entire night in the close proximity of the Beast and doesn't notice a thing - SPOILER].

Silver Nails - 3 Stars - A collection of five short stories. The titular bloodsucker appears in only two out of four stories. "Silver Nails" creates some embarrassing contradictions; in "Drachenfels" it's stated that lady Melissa has been in the convent of the Order of Eternal Night and Solace so long that she has no clue on what's going on in the outside world, while in "Silver Nails" she's traveling near the fortress of the Great Enchanter. Also, if Genevieve knew about the true nature of Yefimovich, why didn't she try to stop him in "Beasts in Velvet"? "Ibby the Fish Factor", while entertaining, has such an incoherent finale that I can only shrug and forget I ever read it. "Silver Nails" is an overall okay short story quartet, but not nearly as good as the rest of "The Vampire Genevieve" collection.

For me, the greatest flaw of "The Vampire Genevieve" collection is the idealized way in which it depicts vampirism. Genevieve isn't damaged by sunlight, doesn't have to drink blood often, doesn't have to sleep in a coffin, and can swim in running water all she wants. She looks sixteen, has great strength and endurance, excellent night vision, can mutate her teeth and fingers into fangs and claws at will, and doesn't have to kill anyone when feeding - her "victims" actually relish the experience. She can walk unopposed among humanity, parading her eternal youth and overall superiority as she wills - the only inconvenience she experiences is that she occasionally runs into a vampire-hater who will, at the very worst, tell her to steer clear of him/her. One has to wonder; why aren't there more vampires about? Why would anyone say no to a socially acceptable immortality that has no downside to speak of?

This lack of weaknesses makes the entire concept of vampirism pointless. Genevieve might as well not be a vampire at all. Replace her great strength and claws-on-demand with martial expertise and give her a set of pointy ears, and you'd have an elf adventurer. The stories (except maybe "Ibby the Fish Factor") would play out the same.

Overall, the writing is mediocre and the story premise is a little contrived. It is a good buy though to keep you busy until a newer book or series comes along.

Questions of Perception: Phenomenology of Architecture, by Steven Holl, Juhani Pallasmaa, Alberto Perez-Gomez

This new edition of Questions of Perception brings back into print one of the most important architectural theory treatise of recent years. Authored by noted architectural scholars Alberto Pérez-Gómez and Juhani Pallasmaa as well as the preeminent architect Steven Holl, the three separate essays are thematically linked: each one tries to explain the role human perception and phenomenological experience play in architecture. In particular, Holl -- who was named by Time magazine as the most important architect of his generation and the designer of the much-lauded Chapel of St. Ignatius at Seattle University and the highly anticipated Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art addition -- lucidly explicates the importance of intuition in the construction and experience of built space. Holl explains his search for phenomenological experience thus: "To open architecture to questions of perception, we must suspend disbelief, disengage the rational half of the mind, and simply play and explore. Reason and skepticism must yield to a horizon of discovery."

Interesting concept, but scattered content
By Margulies Perruzzi Architects
The book is a combination of three articles. The first article, Architectural Space: Meaning as Presence and Representation, is by Alberto Perez-Gomez. The second article, Architecture of the Seven Senses, is by Juhani Pallasmaa, and the third article by Steven Holl is titled Questions of Perception: The Phenomenology of Architecture. The articles were originally published in the Architecture and Urbanism periodical in July of 1994, and were recently published into a separate book by William Stout Publishers.

The first article, Architectural Space: Meaning as Presence and Representation, discusses architecture in only two of its sixteen pages. The article is very dense and must be read many times over to be able to grasp what the author is trying to say. Gomez begins with a story about how architecture and language were created simultaneously with the invention of fire, arguing "This architectural action was an act of affirmation taking place in a space that was, from its inception, social, cultural and linguistic." (Gomez pg. 9) He continues to discuss art in Ancient Greece, specifically of theatre and how architecture played a role in its creation of public space. The rest of his argument tries to explain to the reader Plato's writing of space and how `mysterious' it is.

Professor Joseph Agassi wrote a book review on these articles and when writing about this first article by Gomez, Agassi strongly expresses that Gomez fails to explain Plato's writings correctly. Gomez writes as if Plato's writings of space are mysterious when in fact Plato had a strong opinion about space and what it was made up of. "According to the ancient atoms theory, the world is made up of space and particles that move in it. Plato rejected this approach, presenting his own theory but which the world is composed of matter and form, whereby space is nothing but formless matter." Agassi pg. 14) This is a mystery in itself and that is what Gomez is trying to explain but he writes nothing about fact leading the reader to believe, if they know nothing of scientific history, that Plato was a poetic writer that spoke only of space and how it is mysterious in ways we don't understand, when actually Plato had very specific ideas about what space actually is.

The second article, Architecture of the Seven Senses, discusses how all the senses are closely integrated. Pallasma argues that architecture has turned into something only for the eye, but in reality all human senses engage architecture. He argues that "We behold, touch, listen and measure the world with our entire bodily existence and the experiential world is organized and articulated around the center of the body." (Pallasma pg. 35) He continues to discuss material and their relation to the human touch, light and shadow with the relation of temperature on ones skin; he discusses how smell and sound can trigger memories of space, giving specific examples for each of these arguments. I agree with Pallasma, in that architecture is sensual. No matter who you a stone floor covered in sun is going to feel warm beneath your feet, and the touch of wood is going to feel more natural than the touch of metal.

The article starts to speculate around Pallasma's arguments of scent. He references Gaston Bachelard in the Poetics of Space claiming, "Memory and imagination remain associated." (Pallasma pg. 32) Both Bachelard and Pallasma assume that everyone will have the same experience with the same smell. Pallasma uses the example of an abandoned house and the hollow smell within, or of a shoemakers store and the images one thinks of when the odor enters their nostrils. These are the images that Pallasma remembers when he smells these odors. I agree that smell can trigger memory but it is bold of the author to assume that the same specific smells conjure up the same specific images for everyone.

The third article by Steven Holl discusses the experience of architecture and how, according to Holl, the building speaks through the silence of perceptional phenomena. Holl breaks his argument down into eleven `Phenomenal Zones' from perspective space to sound and detail. Within each zone he gives an example of his own work and ideas to strengthen each argument. These examples might all relate to his arguments but some of them belong in the realm of art rather than the realm of architecture. Holl argues "that only architecture can simultaneously awaken all the senses - all the complexities of perception;" but what about nature? All of his examples, light and shadow, water, spatiality of night are elements found in the natural environment. He continues his entire argument, based on these phenomenal zones discussing how they are found within architecture and how only in architecture can they awaken ones senses but in reality they have the same effect in nature that they do in buildings.

Holl tries to capture the reader into this sense of amazement within his own work, arguing that he has found ways to recreate perceptional phenomena within his works, this is not what I argue is wrong with his article, but that these natural phenomena are not only within architecture as he states, but are found within the wilderness of the everyday life.

Architecture, unlike other forms of art, addresses all the senses simultaneously and instantaneously, according to Holl but I agree with Joseph Agassi when he says that this is an exaggeration. Just as in Pallasmas article smell is only indirectly tied with architecture, and as Agassi points out, so is theatre as in the first article.

Joseph Agassi concludes his book review by saying the concepts the authors propose are not phenomenology and do not contribute to our understanding of architecture. As a student trying to understand perception of space through the human body I found these articles to open many doors into further exploration of human perception within the built form. Do they relate to phenomenology? Considering that there is no one straight answer to what phenomenology is, I can't say. I can say that the first article is much more philosophical relating to the idea of space than the last two articles which complement each other well explaining sensual architectural experience.

I am an architectural designer with Margulies Perruzzi Architects. [...]

poetics, instead of polemics
By _snowcrash
Architects and students who are bored to death by OMA, MVRDV, Hadid, and the rest of the New Postmodernists will find consolation -- and inspiration -- in this book.

"Questions of Perception" was originally printed in July 1994, as a special issue of the architectural journal A+U. Back issues have been sold out for some time, and until recently, buying a used copy of the book would have set you back a couple hundred dollars. I'm very glad to see that the publishers of A+U decided to reprint these important essays.

Rather than serving as a polemical manifesto, or another boring iteration of reactionary academic theory, the authors discuss the experience of architecture on a basic psychophysiological level. Unlike the work of many of today's starchitects, this book will never seem dated, because it is focused on human constants -- the way that our minds and bodies respond to space, light, texture, color, and other architectural fundamentals. It is not a manual of style, or a collection of glossy photos for you to copy in your next project. It requires active thought. It requires an attention span. You have to absorb the meaning of the writings, not just look at computer renderings with copy+pasted supermodel silhouettes. It has nothing to do with urbanism, globalism, terrorism, or any of the other "isms" that hopeless, clueless, talentless academics increasingly try to link to the building and construction industry. Instead, it's a quiet reflection on the ways that buildings (and natural environments) shape our daily experiences. Even though 13 years have passed since these essays were written, they are still highly relevant for any designer who wants to infuse their work with quality and honesty.

As far as I can tell, the book's design is identical to the 1994 version, with the exception of the cover artwork. I must admit that $50 is a bit pricey for a book that is so plainly printed and bound. Regardless, it's better than paying a couple hundred dollars for a used copy of the original. And, all things considered, it's only a few dollars more than something like S,M,L,XL. So if you're tired of pretentious, pedantic academese, and you're ready to read something with permanence and substance, do yourself a favor and buy "Questions of Perception" instead.

Health Promotion in Nursing Practice
By Leslie D.
I purchased this book in a Kindle edition. When I saw the sample of the book that was provided before I purchased it, I thought it would be fine. It was easy to read. However when I purchased this book as a Kindle, the font is too small to see, and the option to adjust or change the font to a larger size is not available for this book. I thought buying the Kindle edition was a good idea, but it was not.

I would not recommend buying this book in the Kindle form.

This nursing textbook was required for my first class in my MSN program. What a great resource providing multifacet methods in providing health promotion and prevention for multicultural populations within all different age groups! Truly thought provoking information that will be forever used in practice! Thank you for such an intense and informational resource! Despite the hereditary factor, as a community we can continue to implement healthy living through promotion and prevention education to decrease the likelihood of disease to occur.

Introduction: C++ Primer PlusIntroductionPreface to the Fifth Edition

Learning C++ is an adventure of discovery, particularly because the language accommodates several programming paradigms, including object-oriented programming, generic programming, and the traditional procedural programming. C++ was a moving target as the language added new features, but now, with the ISO/ANSI C++ Standard, Second Edition (2003), in place, the language has stabilized. Contemporary compilers support most or all of the features mandated by the standard, and programmers have had time to get used to applying these features. The fifth edition of this book, C++ Primer Plus, reflects the ISO/ANSI standard and describes this matured version of C++.

C++ Primer Plus discusses the basic C language and presents C++ features, making this book self-contained. It presents C++ fundamentals and illustrates them with short, to-the-point programs that are easy to copy and experiment with. You'll learn about input/output (I/O), how to make programs perform repetitive tasks and make choices, the many ways to handle data, and how to use functions. You'll learn about the many features C++ has added to C, including the following:

  • Classes and objects

  • Inheritance

  • Polymorphism, virtual functions, and runtime type identification (RTTI)

  • Function overloading

  • Reference variables

  • Generic, or type-independent, programming, as provided by templates and the Standard Template Library (STL)

  • The exception mechanism for handling error conditions

  • Namespaces for managing names of functions, classes, and variables

The Primer Approach

C++ Primer Plus brings several virtues to the task of presenting all this material. It builds on the primer tradition begun by C Primer Plus nearly two decades ago and embraces its successful philosophy:

  • A primer should be an easy-to-use, friendly guide.

  • A primer doesn't assume that you are already familiar with all relevant programming concepts.

  • A primer emphasizes hands-on learning with brief, easily typed examples that develop your understanding, a concept or two at a time.

  • A primer clarifies concepts with illustrations.

  • A primer provides questions and exercises to let you test your understanding, making the book suitable for self-learning or for the classroom.

Following these principles, the book helps you understand this rich language and how to use it. For example:

  • It provides conceptual guidance about when to use particular features, such as using public inheritance to model what are known as is-a relationships.

  • It illustrates common C++ programming idioms and techniques.

  • It provides a variety of sidebars, including tips, cautions, things to remember, compatibility notes, and real-world notes.

The author and editors of this book do our best to keep the presentation to-the-point, simple, and fun. Our goal is that by the end of the book, you'll be able to write solid, effective programs and enjoy yourself doing so.

Sample Code Used in This Book

This book provides an abundance of sample code, most of it in the form of complete programs. Like the previous editions, this book practices generic C++ so that it is not tied to any particular kind of computer, operating system, or compiler. Thus, the examples were tested on a Windows XP system, a Macintosh OS X system, and a Linux system. Only a few programs were affected by compiler non-conformance issues. Compiler compliance with the C++ standard has improved since the previous edition of this book first appeared.

The sample code for the complete programs described in this book is available on the Sams website, at http://www.samspublishing.com. Enter this book's ISBN (without the hyphens) in the Search box and click Search. When the book's title is displayed, click the title to go to a page where you can download the code. You also can find solutions to selected programming exercises at this site.

How This Book Is Organized

This book is divided into 17 chapters and 10 appendixes, summarized here.

Chapter 1: Getting Started

Chapter 1 relates how Bjarne Stroustrup created the C++ programming language by adding object-oriented programming support to the C language. You'll learn the distinctions between procedural languages, such as C, and object-oriented languages, such as C++. You'll read about the joint ANSI/ISO work to develop a C++ standard. This chapter discusses the mechanics of creating a C++ program, outlining the approach for several current C++ compilers. Finally, it describes the conventions used in this book.

Chapter 2: Setting Out to C++

Chapter 2 guides you through the process of creating simple C++ programs. You'll learn about the role of the main() function and about some of the kinds of statements that C++ programs use. You'll use the predefined cout and cin objects for program output and input, and you'll learn about creating and using variables. Finally, you'll be introduced to functions, C++'s programming modules.

Chapter 3: Dealing with Data

C++ provides built-in types for storing two kinds of data: integers (numbers with no fractional parts) and floating-point numbers (numbers with fractional parts). To meet the diverse requirements of programmers, C++ offers several types in each category. Chapter 3 discusses those types, including creating variables and writing constants of various types. You'll also learn how C++ handles implicit and explicit conversions from one type to another.

Chapter 4: Compound Types

C++ lets you construct more elaborate types from the basic built-in types. The most advanced form is the class, discussed in Chapters 9 through 13. Chapter 4 discusses other forms, including arrays, which hold several values of a single type; structures, which hold several values of unlike types; and pointers, which identify locations in memory. You'll also learn how to create and store text strings and to handle text I/O by using C-style character arrays and the C++ string class. Finally, you'll learn some of the ways C++ handles memory allocation, including using the new and delete operators for managing memory explicitly.

Chapter 5: Loops and Relational Expressions

Programs often must perform repetitive actions, and C++ provides three looping structures for that purpose: the for loop, the while loop, and the do while loop. Such loops must know when they should terminate, and the C++ relational operators enable you to create tests to guide such loops. In Chapter 5 you learn how to create loops that read and process input character-by-character. Finally, you'll learn how to create two-dimensional arrays and how to use nested loops to process them.

Chapter 6: Branching Statements and Logical Operators

Programs can behave intelligently if they can tailor their behavior to circumstances. In Chapter 6 you'll learn how to control program flow by using the if, if else, and switch statements and the conditional operator. You'll learn how to use logical operators to help express decision-making tests. Also, you'll meet the cctype library of functions for evaluating character relations, such as testing whether a character is a digit or a nonprinting character. Finally, you'll get an introductory view of file I/O.

Chapter 7: Functions: C++'s Programming Modules

Functions are the basic building blocks of C++ programming. Chapter 7 concentrates on features that C++ functions share with C functions. In particular, you'll review the general format of a function definition and examine how function prototypes increase the reliability of programs. Also, you'll investigate how to write functions to process arrays, character strings, and structures. Next, you'll learn about recursion, which is when a function calls itself, and see how it can be used to implement a divide-and-conquer strategy. Finally, you'll meet pointers to functions, which enable you to use a function argument to tell one function to use a second function.

Chapter 8: Adventures in Functions

Chapter 8 explores the new features C++ adds to functions. You'll learn about inline functions, which can speed program execution at the cost of additional program size. You'll work with reference variables, which provide an alternative way to pass information to functions. Default arguments let a function automatically supply values for function arguments that you omit from a function call. Function overloading lets you create functions having the same name but taking different argument lists. All these features have frequent use in class design. Also, you'll learn about function templates, which allow you to specify the design of a family of related functions.

Chapter 9: Memory Models and Namespaces

Chapter 9 discusses putting together multifile programs. It examines the choices in allocating memory, looking at different methods of managing memory and at scope, linkage, and namespaces, which determine what parts of a program know about a variable.

Chapter 10: Objects and Classes

A class is a user-defined type, and an object (such as a variable) is an instance of a class. Chapter 10 introduces you to object-oriented programming and to class design. A class declaration describes the information stored in a class object and also the operations (class methods) allowed for class objects. Some parts of an object are visible to the outside world (the public portion), and some are hidden ...

The first c++ book you should read
By T. Liu
If you are new to C++, this is THE C++ you need to read. There is another book called "C++ Primer" (no plus). The following comment is what I wrote for the book C++ Primer, which may give you some idea of the difference between these two:

This is a great book for anyone who want to enhance his/her knowledge

on C++, but this is by no means a primer book. If you are new to C++,

read the book "C++ primer plus" first. It is so funny that the book

"C++ primer plus" (which is also a great book) is really an introductory

book. The names of these two books should be swapped because C++ Primer

introduces more advanced topics and the topics that an experience programmer should know but a student does not need to. From my teaching experience in a state university, I would suggest students to read C++ books in the following order:

C++ primer Plus

C++ Primer

Thinking in C++ (great book, free on the internet)

The C++ Programming Language (by Stroustrup)

Then you may want to read some books on special topics such as Visual C++, Database, etc.

Top marks all around
By Adaera
The decorously named "C++ Primer Plus, fifth edition" is a book for C++ beginners and those who would consider themselves a C++ virtuoso. C++ Primer Plus doesn't follow the trend of being the type of programming book that you either learn from and set away forever on a dusty shelf nor the type that you can use as a reference guide but can't use it to learn from. This is one of the few programming books I have read that I have both learned from and can still use as a perfectly suitable reference guide.

In C++ Primer Plus, you are lead through the "cin's" and "cout's" of C++. In this book you will be given well guided lessons with examples from the basic to the advanced features of this wonderfuly capable programming language. You will learn the common C++ programming idioms and techniques as you turn the pages, each example constructed clearly and professionally. One of the great features attributed to this book is the dedication to teaching its readers C++, one being each example code given to you to
use was carefully crafted to be compitable with most popular and even a few less heard of, C++ compilers.
The author is also good at explaining each piece of code with wonderful precision and patience, so well in fact they don't have to provide constant screen shots to show what they are trying to explain - unlike many other programming books.
If you have ever wanted to learn a programming language that is greatly respected in the business world, then I would of course suggest picking up C++. If you want a great book to learn from and use as a guide throughout your programming life for C++, then I suggest picking up "C++ Primer Plus, fifth edition". Just as much as I appreciate this book for its ability to teach people directly, I equally would recommend this book as a
good teaching text for those of you who may already know C++ but find it hard to teach others. I myself hope to use this book to teach others by one day.

The best C++ book! Oh, and forget about the minor errata!
By Skyward
This is the overall best C++ book for both beginner and intermediate programmers. As a self-learning student struggling to fully understand C++, i have gone through most, if not all, of the popular C++ books. My quest for the ultimate introductory and user-friendly C++ self-learning guide finally ended when i bought this one after reading several online recommendations from experienced teachers and successful C++ students.

The author of C++ Primer Plus introduces the basic topics, without assuming prior knowledge and this approach definitely helps you to build a solid background. You can gradually assimilate and understand the basic concepts before moving on to more complex ideas and principles. The reader is taken through a steadily increasing learning curve but you should follow the order of the chapters as you progress through the book, analyse the examples and work through the problems, if you want to get a thorough understanding of those concepts.

There is an important issue that needs to be addressed regarding the 6th edition, namely, the list of errors or "errata". Honestly, the "errata" is being tagged too easily to the 6th edition, based on previous reviews, and it is unjustified for this excellent book. The apparent deluge of complaints about errors in the 6th edition isn't fair as it gives the wrong impression and it might cause a few people to shy away from the opportunity of learning from this highly instructive and overall great book.

I haven't seen this crucial piece of information mentioned anywhere, but this should soothe your mind about errors in the book; there is a second printing which was released in early 2012, and it fixed all the known errors shown on the errata page! The first printing was in October 2011 and the second printing is listed as January 2012. The short time lapse between the first and second printing is quite unusual for any book, especially one as popular as C++ Primer Plus. It clearly shows the commitment that the author, Stephen Prata, has towards keeping his work as accurate as possible. Personally, i am very satisfied with the second printing and the author's ethics are first class. I can't say the same about some other C++ authors who "manufactured" text and examples for business purposes (Deitel, anyone?) which has caused me to waste away many hours trying to get a sound understanding of how the given explanations are connected to the examples.

For those who bought the 6th edition before 2012, you most likely got the first printing. You can easily verify which printing you own, by going to page 4 (not numbered) where the copyright information is located. In my copy, the last line says "Second printing January 2012". That means, it is the revised 6th edition, and you won't have to worry about the short list of mistakes available at the online errata page. If you already own the 1st printing of the 6th edition, fear not, as you can simply visit the online errata page and seek through your book to the concerned pages/sections and manually correct the mistakes. I counted only 21 errors listed on the online errata page, which is certainly not a huge number of errors, considering the size of the book. You can find the link to the online errata page by searching on the publisher's official site at informit [dot] com. On the book's page, click on the "Updates" tab.
