A wonderful overview of dance

This book truly made a course that I dreaded taking enjoyable. I recommend this book whether you are taking a dance course or if you would just like to improve your knowledge of dance and its components in general. It is written in a way that is easily comprehensible to most readers. I give this book a four star rating because, while certain aspects of dance (such as its elements) are highlighted, this book does not go into strong detail when referring to various styles. As previously stated, however, this book is wonderful for a scholar or dance enthusiast to read in order to increase his/her general knowledge of the art of dance.

The exposition is pretty vague and not descriptive

This book is very expensive and not particularly insightful. A lot of the information is kind of page-filling, with long lists of people's names totally out of context. The exposition is pretty vague and not descriptive. It felt very wishy-washy. I don't think this is college level reading - more like high school or middle school.

Great Practical Handbook

As an electrical engineer who has been out of school for a few years, I found this book to be tremendously helpful in covering topics I either never really delved into or only took intro courses on. It provided excellent explanations on both data conversion concepts and the hardware used to realize them. I found the handbook's explanation of device parameter specifications to be incredibly useful, giving the knowledge needed to pick the right part for my job. They also have testing and analysis procedures for different elements and great example circuits. Great book. I definitely recommend it.

The bible of A-D conversion

If you're doing circuit and system design involving analog-digital conversion, you need this book. Packed with detailed information from the industry leader in converter chips. Lots of tips and information about typical problems and how to avoid them, including power supply noise, layout considerations, keeping the digital transients out of the analog signal chain (not to mention the inputs of the ADC), etc. A very practical and useful book for mixed-signal design engineers.

A partisan review of the book from "Analog Dialogue"

At last! A modern book on data conversion worthy to succeed our 1986 landmark Analog-Digital Conversion Handbook (3rd edition). The Data Conversion Handbook is based on the book, Analog-Digital Conversion, a comprehensive set of notes for a recent Analog Devices seminar series on data converters.

In a digital world, A/D and D/A conversion is essential to translate between analog real-world physical variables and the abstract 1s and 0s of digital processing. The book's nine chapter titles offer a hint of its breadth, as well as its orientation to practical designing with and use of converters: Data-converter history; Fundamentals of sampled-data systems; Data-converter architectures; Data-converter process technology; Testing data converters; Interfacing to data converters; Data-converter support circuits; Data-converter applications; and Hardware design techniques.

The first chapter, data-converter history, starts with the early 18th-century background in hydraulic water-metering systems in the Ottoman empire, then-when electricity came into use-from the 19th century telegraph era through the 1950s. The chapter then covers progress-decade-by-decade-in technology, circuitry, and applications of converters during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Where relevant, historical contexts are also noted in some of the later chapters.

The second chapter, fundamentals of sampled-data systems, sets the stage for hardware design-discussing coding and quantizing, sampling theory, data-converter ac errors, general data-converter specifications, and definitions of specifications.

Chapter 3, data-converter architectures, discusses DAC architectures, ADC architectures, and sigma-delta converters. Although it concentrates on the most popular designs, it seeks not to neglect any significant approach. For example, among DACs it discusses the Kelvin divider (string DACs), thermometer (fully decoded DACs), binary-weighted DACs, R-2R DACs, segmented DACs, oversampling interpolating DACs, multiplying DACs, intentionally nonlinear DACs, counting pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) DACs, cyclic serial DACs, and "other low-distortion architectures"-and naturally, the sigma-delta converter section includes sigma-delta DACs.

The fourth chapter covers a wide range of data-converter process technologies, from the early vacuum-tube converters, through solid-state modular and hybrid converters, to bipolar, complementary-bipolar (CB), and CMOS integrated-circuit processes. Also covered are thin-film resistor and calibration processes; and there is a section on smart partitioning: optimizing performance, space, and cost by intelligent choice of process partitioning within a package.

Chapter 5 provides in-depth discussions of a wide variety of testing techniques for static and dynamic performance characteristics of DACs and ADCs. The following chapter, interfacing to data converters, has a major section devoted to analog interface considerations in driving ADC inputs. Other sections in this chapter include ADC and DAC digital interfaces (and related issues), buffering DAC analog outputs, data-converter voltage references, and sampling-clock generation.

Chapter 7, data-converter support circuits, discusses in depth such important analog auxiliary circuits as voltage references; low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator circuits; analog-, digital-, and video switches (including cross-point types) and multiplexers; and sample (track)-and-hold circuits.

The foregoing chapters, some 60% of the book, amount to a virtual appetizer for the banquet of tutorial material in the last two chapters: data-converter applications (Chapter 8) and hardware design techniques (Chapter 9). These two chapters amount to a practical course on design solutions and techniques that can enrich the portfolio of any designer, from the technician and recent graduate to the hardened systems engineer.

The wide-ranging coverage in Chapter 8 is apportioned among eight topics: precision measurement and sensor conditioning, multichannel data-acquisition systems, digital potentiometers, digital audio, digital video and display electronics, software radio and IF sampling, direct digital synthesis, and precision analog microcontrollers.

Finally, Chapter 9's 185 pages are in themselves essentially a textbook for the hardware designer. Its eight topical areas are labeled: passive components, pc-board design issues, analog power-supply systems, overvoltage protection, thermal management, EMI/RFI considerations, low-voltage logic interfacing, and breadboarding & prototyping. Chapter 9 is followed by a comprehensive subject index and an indexed listing of Analog Devices products mentioned in the book.

This book will be a valuable addition to the library of the student, the practicing circuit design engineer and technician, and anyone else who needs a good practical grasp of what is needed for a successful marriage between the analog and digital worlds.

Collis, Frederick Frank Adjunct Professor of International Business Administration, Yale School of Management: Professor Collis is associate professor of business administration at Harvard Business School. His research focuses on corporate strategy and global competition. At Harvard, he jointly developed the second year MBA elective course on corporate strategy, and in 1996 was rated the top teacher among all strategy faculty. He is a strategic consultant to the top management of major U.S. and U.K. corporations, and participates in in-house management education programs for multinational companies.Ph.D. Harvard University

been taught by Cynthia on the HBS AMP track was truly a great experience, reflecting the needs of "why do you matter, how do you differentiate, ..." - this books links corporate strategy in a holistic view and gives the reader a complete and deep insight in this must apply knowledge. if you want to be on the winning side in the next years, read it. looking forward for the new book, seems to be on the way.

About the Author
H. E. Jacob wrote some forty books during his prolific career, including biographies, poetry, dramas, and histories. After fleeing Nazi-occupied Germany, he moved to New York and gained American citizenship. In the early fifties he returned to Germany, where he died in 1967.

Peter Reinhart is the author of many award-winning books on bread and culture, including The Bread Baker’s Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread and Peter Reinhart’s Whole Grain Breads: New Techniques, Extraordinary Flavor. He is a baking instructor at Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Some very interesting insights connecting the art of breathd-making and consumption with global and local events. I knew about the connection between bread and the French Revolution, but most of the other connections boggled my mind, especially since there miht well be more than a simple grain of possible truth in them.

Good book on the history of bread

Good book on the history of bread, but the first section on the Bread of Prehistoric Man is basically speculation based on evolutionary theory without any historical data to verify his conclusions. Of course, Jacob lived before the major weaknesses of evolutionary theory had been demonstrated. If you like bread, this book is a good resource to have.

self confidence and self esteem. The book offers a practical step by step approach

I liked the concept of no contact rule to let the other person realize what importance you
had in his life. Sometimes we need to actually distance ourselves from the one we have loved
for them to realize that they love us as well.

About the Author
Samuel Issacharoff is the Reiss Professor of Constitutional Law at New York University School of Law. A pioneer in the field of law of the political process, he is the author of more than 100 articles, books, and other academic works, including the seminal The Law of Democracy, 4th edition (with Pamela S. Karlan and Richard H. Pildes, 2012). Issacharoff is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Francisco de Zurbarán was a Spanish painter, known mainly for his religious paintings depicting monks, nuns, and martyrs, and for his stilllifes. Zurbarán gained the nickname "Spanish Caravaggio", owing to the forceful, realistic use of chiaroscuro in which he excelled. He painted directly from nature, and made great use of the lay-figure in the study of draperies, in which Zurbarán was particularly expert. His subjects were mostly severe and ascetic religious vigils, the spirit chastising the flesh into subjection, the compositions often reduced to a single figure. The style is more reserved and chastened than Caravaggio's, the tone of color often quite bluish. Exceptional effects are attained by the precisely finished foregrounds, massed out largely in light and shade. Towards 1630 he was appointed painter to Philip IV, and there is a story that on one occasion the sovereign laid his hand on the artist's shoulder, saying "Painter to the king, king of painters."

This seventh edition of Principles of Electric Circuits: Conventional Current Version provides a complete and straightforward coverage of the basics of electrical components and circuits, with emphasis on analysis, applications, and troubleshooting. Many improvements have been made over the previous edition, but the coverage and organization remain the same. A new text design and layout enhance the text's appearance and usability.

New Features and Improvements

Troubleshooter Quiz. A multiple-choice quiz in the chapter end matter tests the student's grasp of what happens in a circuit as a result of certain changes or faults. The student must determine whether a specified quantity or parameter increases, decreases, or remains the same as a result of the introduction of a fault or a change in another circuit parameter. Answers are at the end of the chapter.

Engineering Notation. Chapter 1 includes an expanded coverage of engineering notation and the use of the calculator in scientific and engineering notation.

Electrical Safety. The topic of electrical safety is introduced in Chapter 2. It is supplemented by a feature called "Safety Note" located at appropriate points throughout the text and identified by a special logo.

Troubleshooting. An improved coverage of troubleshooting begins in Section 3-6 with an introduction. A systematic method called APM (analysis, planning, and measurement) is introduced and used in many of the troubleshooting sections and examples. Troubleshooting features are identified by a new logo.

Circuit Simulations. In addition to the EWB circuit simulations for Troubleshooting and Analysis problems that are available on the CD-ROM accompanying the textbook, Multisim circuits have been added. To avoid any backward compatibility issues, the EWB files have been retained for those who have not yet upgraded to Multisim.

Circuit Simulation Tutorials. The EWB and PSpice tutorials continue to be available on the website. In addition, Multisim tutorials are now available online. All of the tutorials can be downloaded for student use from www.prenhall.com/floyd.

Key Terms Terms. identified as most important in each chapter are listed in the chapter opener. Within the chapter, the key terms are in color boldface and indicated with a "key" icon. Each key term is defined at the end of the chapter and in the comprehensive glossary at the end of the book.

This is quite a good book. I used this for both my DC and AC circuits classes at the University of Hartford. I rented the book but should have bought it. It has very nice diagrams and is written out very well.

The author's approach to the concepts is very well-paced. The explanations are thought out and concise. Because of this, I've been able to speed through the book whilst mastering the content with ease. A well-grounded knowledge of algebra is of course requisite to being successful with this subject.
