ea. vol: 47p. illus. photogs. glossary. index. (Mystery of Series). CIP. Crestwood House. 1987. PLB $10.95. Grade 4-6 These books present an accept able blend of old and new information. The format appears aimed at younger readers; older readers could be insulted by the style. The tone is flatly informa tive, neither sensational nor conde scending, with ample use of complex words in short sentences. Of the four, The Bermuda Triangle and Bigfoot seem to be the most well-documented. Although a fairly reasonable balance is struck in the text between truth, the ory, quotations, and conjecture, the il lustrations tend to be significantly mis leading. They are abundant, but not particularly good or distinguished in any way. Colors are typically dark and murky. Some illustrations are poorly captioned; some show hypothetical places or entities but are presented as factual. Illustrations are sometimes poorly juxtaposed with the text. Too bad the final quality of these books does not match the fair and even-hand ed research. Leslie Chamberlin, Napa City-County Library, Calif.

Amazon.com Review
Since 1987, Starbucks's star has been on the rise, growing from 11 Seattle, WA-based stores to more than 1,000 worldwide. Its goals grew, too, from the more modest, albeit fundamental one of offering high-quality coffee beans roasted to perfection to, more recently, opening a new store somewhere every day. An exemplary success story, Starbucks is identified with innovative marketing strategies, employee-ownership programs, and a product that's become a subculture.

Whether you're an entrepreneur, a manager, a marketer, or a curious Starbucks loyalist, Pour Your Heart into It will let you in on the revolutionary Starbucks venture. CEO Howard Schultz recounts the company's rise in 24 chapters, each of which illustrates such core values as "Winning at the expense of employees is not victory at all."

From Library Journal
Schultz, chairman and CEO of Starbucks, and writer-researcher Yang trace the growth and development of Starbucks from a single store in Seattle, which in 1973 sold only dark-roasted coffee beans, to the international business it has become today. Schultz does not conceal his passion for good coffee or for his company. His initial goals were to introduce Americans to really fine coffee, provide people with a "third place" to gather, and treat his employees with dignity. The extent to which he succeeded and the obstacles encountered along the way are the subjects he tackles here. This is not, in the strictest sense, a how-to book despite its considerable detail but more a motivational title. Recommended for large public libraries.?Joseph C. Toschik, Half Moon Bay P.L., Cal.

From Kirkus Reviews
A chatty history of Starbucks by its CEO, who announces that he considers the company to be only in its third chapter (which is nowhere near the eleventh). Schultz first heard of Starbucks in 1981 when he sold to the fledgling business a number of expensive coffeemakers, and he fell in love with the company immediately. He calls the meeting bashert (Yiddish for destiny), and while the Seattle-based group may have had another word for it, Brooklyn-bred Schultz does seem particularly suited to Starbucks. He repeatedly swoons over the coffee and details at length the process that turns a small green bean into a dark brown drink in a green cup. His enthusiasm for his product is palpable when he writes of ``the romance of the coffee experience'' at Starbucks, though his tips about how to run a company are less valuable. Schultz does offer some useful war stories--especially his dinner with the Seattle partners, who found him ``too New York''--and his idea of putting even part-time workers on the company's health-care plan is both admirable and cost-effective, saving money on employee turnover. Schultz, who bought the company for under $4 million, should have more specific points to convey about how he made Starbucks worth over $270 million in a half a decade. And much of the Starbucks story is overly familiar, while elsewhere, the narrative would be better served if the events were discussed chronologically: It's jarring to jump from the 1996 success of Frappuccinos and ice cream to the devastating Brazilian frost of 1994. Though this is unsatisfying as a skim-milk latte in places, Schultz is less a braggart and more a true believer than many CEOs, and (with Business Week staffer Yang) he provides a pleasing read. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Great Read, Great Story, and Helpful
By Matthew Morine
So at Castle Rock, we are in the process of creating a vision statement, or perhaps creating some stronger branding within the community. Of course, there are hundreds of books from the religious community on this topic, but instead of reading the same stuff repackaged, I always look to read for other sources to create more creativity within myself. A leader needs a wide variety of material to think outside of the box, and when you think about Starbucks, whatever you think of the coffee, but you cannot say that the company has not branded itself well. It is highly known in this culture. So wanted to read about this man that accomplished a lot. Howard Schultz grew up poor, and has done a great job leading the company. Even when he stepped away, the company started to fail, but he came back, and the company took off again. The book is really fun to read, and is insightful on the journey of growing the company. It is a great story, but there is also a lot of practical advice. You have to root your organization in values and principles because if you have to think through every choice, you are killing valuable time. I liked the chapters on growing large, and feeling small. I liked the people focused dynamics. A lot of the topics translate into the church world well. If you are looking for a light read, this is a good book, and will make you think about your church culture too.

The Organization Lifecycle of Starbucks under the drive of Howard Schultz
By Zoey
One step at a time, Howard Schultz led Starbucks to grow and progress through a series of predictable stages, known as the Organization Lifecycle. From reading “Pour Your Heart into It”, I observe the normal and abnormal problems faced by Schultz; I also learn about how he worked against all norms to pursue his dream by instilling trust within the enterprise to overcome major hurdles in the lifecycle. Schultz’s ability to draw links between his experiences and observations, to leverage contingencies, and to stay open in communications within the enterprise serve as the key to his success.

After working alongside, Jerry and Gordon, the original founders of Starbucks, Schultz had developed the desire to transform Starbucks from a store selling roasted coffee beans to a coffee shop. Unfortunately, drawn to the idea of acquirement of Peet’s Coffee, Jerry Baldwin turned down Schultz’s plan. The rejection by Baldwin was a catalyst to starting his own cafe, named Il Giornale.

The courtship stage of Il Giornale turned out to be very different from the norm. Schultz’s ability to relate what he experienced in Starbucks helped him counter the uncertainty at the early stage. The book places little emphasis on his fear but instead, focuses on his belief that things will unfold the way it should. The decision to color the book with optimism relates to its purpose—to inspire entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams. It is also relevant to the primary goal of this stage which is “to build the founder's enthusiasm and commitment to his dream”.

Every experience prepares Schultz for the next one. Having joined Starbucks with a small equity to handle its marketing led Schultz to gain market understanding and experience in the operations of the business. Baldwin also aspired Schultz to educate the consumers about the joy of world-class coffee. Starbucks, at that time, was at its go-go stage, a stage of “rapid going sales and strong cash flow”. As a result of rushing into rapid expansion, Starbucks suffered from high levels of debt and future restrictions in growth and innovation. Most importantly, Schultz witnesses the blind arrogance of Jerry and Gordon as their rejection of his idea is driven by the fear of being taken over and thus losing authority. Witnessing the downfall of Starbucks due to heavy debt burden and the psychological barrier faced by Jerry and Gordon, Schultz learned lessons without having to experience the consequences.

Schultz has shown us that means-in-hand is sufficient to get one started. However, the challenge lies in the ability to recognize and connect the means. Knowing what he had and what he was willing to let go of (time and money) helped him clarify his vision. Schultz’s claim that “every experience prepared him for the next” reflected how he could leverage his experience to his biggest advantage. His humble beginning led him to different jobs such as cold-calling and team management. The skills obtained turned out to be invaluable as Schultz learned to present concise and humorous sales pitch which was an invaluable asset to convince investors to invest in Il Giornale. Schultz saw light in the coffee industry despite its falling consumption in America in mid 1960s. He saw the opportunity to take the old, tired and common-coffee and weaved a sense of romance and community around it. Connecting the ideas of “coffee drinking” and “social life” was later on discovered by Schultz during his trip to Italy. His experience in Italy was deemed imperative as it contributed to the generation of culture in Starbucks. Schultz was exposed to the details of retail and food preparation, the camaraderie between the customers, and the sense of extended family as the owner knew his customers by names. The scarcity of such ambience in the American coffee drinking culture exemplified the irreplaceability of genuine relationships developed in a coffee house.

As an entrepreneur, Schultz is atypical. In his book, he mentioned the importance of filling a need instead of studying the market trend. The focus on filling a need helped Il Giornale develop a strong competitive advantage. However, it is important to be cognizant of Schultz’s prior experiences in the coffee industry which contributed to his understanding of the market and consumers. The overreliance of marketing trends may hinder innovation, but one should also be concerned if there is a significant lack of fear at the stage of courtship. It is advisable to read the book with the awareness of its purpose-- to inspire entrepreneurs. Fear, uncertainty and doubt serve as the ingredients of courtship; however, the ability to work in unknown and to sustain the initial passion throughout the course is the key to winning the race.

Schultz drove the business development of Il Giornale to the infancy stage when he decided to leave Starbucks for a better control of his destiny. Gaining control related to the ability to act on his ideas, not others’, but gaining such control also opened doors to less control and higher uncertainty in his voyage. “Infant organizations are necessarily action-oriented and opportunity-driven.” His focus instantly changed from ideas to action. While raising capital, Schultz struck a record of 217 “no”s out of 242 approaches. Psychological challenge was the highest barrier at this stage as Schultz was faced with internal frustration of countless denials in the one-man show and external pressure of cash starvation. He also brought light to the contradiction of his emotions as he felt both self-doubt and self-confidence, insecurities and faith during this period. At this stage of the lifecycle, the founder and all employees constantly test the limits of their endurance for work, stress and confusion. Schultz’s ability to seek partnership with Dave, the owner of Cafe Allegro (a prototype of what Starbucks later became), buoyed up his spirits. The liability of newness and ambiguity were borne by two as Dave and Schultz overcame the challenge of redefining the coffee experience for the locals. Schultz admitted that he did not know which decisions would end up being the cornerstones, and there was no way of being aware of it at that time.

Schultz, like many entrepreneurs at the infant stage, fell into the trap of ambitious expansion and exclusive focus on generating profit when the foundation was not strongly built. Desperate to impress his investors, he not only expanded outside Seattle, but also outside America without good knowledge of the external markets.

However, to build faith in the readers, Schultz acknowledged a rough start but was quick to draw a happy ending despite the irrational rush into an unfamiliar market. His constant emphasis on how his investors “bet on the jockey, not the horse” aims to draw my attention to the importance of psychological strengths as the business undergoes a steep learning curve. It is a stage that forces entrepreneurs to look at their weaknesses and seek a clear definition of their enterprise. It is also a stage when enterprises are vulnerable to unnoticed problems until they are severely affected. Thus, the faster they know their enterprise inside and out, the faster they free themselves from the infancy stage.

Finding a line between gaining control of the enterprise and being over-confident at the go-go stage served as the next lesson of Schultz’s journey. Schultz faced the dilemma as he was torn between keeping a key investor and risking his authority. This occurred when he planned to acquire Starbucks while one of his investors prepared a separate plan of acquirement that would reduce Schultz’s position in running Starbucks. This principal-agent problem arose due to the conflict in interests between the investor and Schultz. Therefore, Schultz went to great lengths in raising funds to secure Starbucks. In August 1987, Starbucks fell into his hands. From his experience, I notice the emphasis on responding to surprises instead of predicting and preparing for surprises. Each surprise was paired with an opportunity to be exploited. The ability to be flexible and open to surprises empowers entrepreneurs to act in control in uncertainty instead of following a predefined route. Schultz believed in stewardship theory which aligned his interest to that of the investors through adoption of psychological and situational mechanisms in building the corporate culture of Starbucks. He acknowledged the existence of non-economic motivations and desires and thus addressed the uncertainty in the newly-acquired Starbucks by instilling positive values in the environment. The book focuses his values like “speaking from my heart”, “putting myself in their shoes”, and “sharing the Big Dream with them”. He later on put actions to these words as he led the marriage of Il Giornale and Starbucks to the stage of adolescence.

The stage of adolescence can be a stormy period experienced by many entrepreneurs as it involves “decentralization of authority and changes in leadership styles by entrepreneurs” as they shall replace the house-of-cards infrastructure with a scalable solution. In other words, it was a moment when Schultz reorganized the structure of Starbucks around various functions and empowered his employees in running the business. It is a stage when the founder learns to pass the batons to reliable candidates in a relay race. Schultz, who found thrill in working against the norm, challenged the mockery of paternalistic and uncompetitive stigmas attached to companies that value employees above shareholders. To support his ideals with actions, Schultz implemented a Mission Review System for managers to respond to employees and ensure their voices are heard. Besides that, the Bean Stock Program which allowed Starbucks to grant stock options to employees elevated the status of employees to partners. Such personal utility were maximized when Schultz gave the employees a chance to create their own value. The measures ensured people to share the same belief and to think along the same line as the organization. To enhance the administrative management at this stage, an entrepreneur should also free himself from the old effective method. To attract new talent, it is important not to be threatened by people smarter than you. Schultz embraced new methods of running the company as he opened himself to Howards Behar who clarified Starbucks’ direction to fill souls, not bellies. Schultz’s acceptance of Behar’s candor helped him to overcome the normal problems many entrepreneurs face at this stage--power struggle. Behar also assisted in setting up a service control system that involved close monitoring of customer service in stores. Having acknowledged the importance of discipline and system efficiency, he switched his entrepreneurial role to a managerial role. Besides the importance of flexibility in switching roles, we should also be informed about the potential threat of adolescence stage--premature aging and divorce. Schultz did not shed light on the volatility of emotions experienced as sales did not meet estimates. Neither did he address the potential problems that may arise according to the principal-agent theory due to the conflict of interests between the manager and the shareholders. However, Schultz did bring me to the attention of the importance of striking a balance between bureaucracies and building a strong system while taking into account of details in the processes.

As a company reaches prime stage, a stage with simultaneous growing and aging, the company is expected to be equipped with a clear vision and goal; it is also likely to experience high sense of security which may take over the likeliness of constant innovation. Inefficient managerial depth can also be a problem as a company grows exponentially. To counter this problem, Schultz delegated his role in operations and day-to-day management to Orin Smith. Like other entrepreneurs, Schultz undertook the path of reinventing the brand to continuously surprise his customers. His ability to connect the dots served as the greatest asset as he drew a link between the coffee drinking culture and jazz music. Not only did it give a boost in sales, it also exposed customers to unique products that would never be expected in a coffee store. The introduction of Frappuccino further expanded the Starbucks market share to non-coffee drinkers. Being opportunity-driven, Schultz made use of Pepsi’s broad distributions system by collaborating with Pepsi to sell bottled Frappuccino. Starbucks further enhanced higher visibility by moving closer to target markets in areas like Hotel Marriot and United Airlines. Despite the ultimate success, we should be aware of the probable issues like inconsistent quality control experienced by Starbucks at the initial stage of market expansion. While reading the book, we should balance their views on both the glamor of his achievements and also Schultz’s astuteness in crisis management. Schultz was faced with a major crisis when there was a sharp and sudden rise in coffee prices. However, he managed to leverage contingency by transforming the crisis into opportunity to manage the company in a more systematic way. He viewed hardship as a chance to acquire skills he had yet acquired rather than a threat to the business. Starbucks freed itself from the normal and abnormal problems faced by many enterprises due to Schultz’s continuous excitement in challenging status quo.

Starbucks entered a low-margin commodity industry and transformed its product into a cultural symbol. The success of Starbucks is the result of an optimum balance in four roles of management: Produce (P), Administer (A), Entrepreneur (E), and Integrate (I). Under the drive of Schultz, Starbucks capitalized on better service than the competition (P), efficient means of delivery and production(A), high level of innovation(E), and a great organizational culture(I); each of this element (P,A,E,I) was given relevant weight at different stages as the business evolved. Schultz aimed to inspire leaders of enterprises to aim high through the book; however, we should also look critically at how Schultz made use of his resources (including his experiences) and that of his partners and therefore drew connections between them. The sense of partnership between owners and employees of Starbucks also provided the employees with non-economic motivations that promote sincerity and openness within the corporation. Therefore, having read the book, we will not only feel encouraged to take risks, but are also expected to be equipped with knowledge about potential obstacles and relevant mindset at different stages of business growth.

Inspiring, entertaining, useful book for entrepreneurs
By Xavier Atlas
I loved reading this book. The author wrote it with what I consider a simple yet effective storytelling rythm that captivates and inspires the reader. Mr. Schultz talks about his childhood as a poor kid from Brooklyn, and how the example of this dad, who couldn't find inspiration in his life, threw him to be entrepreneurial and never to give up.
The author writes all the way from the begining, how he knew Starbucks while working at a big company, and how he left his comfortable lifestyle and salary to pursue his dream: a project he could call his own.

Some of the messages this books gives are clear and direct. Some of the ones I remember are:
- People connect with Starbucks because of what it stands for, not what it is.
- With pride in their work, Starbucks employees are less likely to leave.
- Starbucks's stores are oasis in the middle of urban chaos where one can have some minutes of relaxation with a cup of coffee.
- What people call niche markets may appeal to more people that you can imagine.
- Make a point to underpromise and overdeliver.
- Word of mouth is more powerful than advertising.
- When companies fail, is mostly because they don't invest in people.
- Entrepreneurial ventures are ruined by short-term thinking.
- Once you figure out what you want to do, find someone who has done it before.

Many more quotes can be written, because the books pages are filled with lessons for everyone thinking about starting their own business, or improving their existing one.

Water Supply and Pollution Control (8th Edition), by Warren Viessman Jr., Mark J. Hammer, Elizabeth M. Perez, Paul A. Chadik

This book provides practicing engineers with water-based environment engineering from theory to practice by presenting the principles of water treatment, wastewater treatment, water reuse, water quality, and overviews of regulations regarding pollution control and drinking water quality.  The Eighth Edition features new and updated coverage of GIS, climate change, alternative water supply development, hydraulics, stormwater treatment techniques, water quality regulations, filter design, and more. Recognizing that all waters are potential sources of supply, the authors present treatment processes in the context of what they can do, rather than dividing them along clean water or waste water lines.  For practicing engineers who need a good reference book and for those preparing to take the examination for licensing as a professional engineer.

somewhat helpful, but sloppy and confusing
By Philip H. Neal Jr.
TONS of typos - from grammatical to vital data and labels in example problems. Following such problems is extremely frustrating at times.
Lots of things are not explained before they are referred to, causing you to go to the index and find the explanation and flip back and forth. Some things are referenced and never explained at all - including data used in solutions to example problems.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The Republic has fallen.
Sith Lords rule the galaxy.
Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi has lost everything . . .
Everything but hope.

Tatooine—a harsh desert world where farmers toil in the heat of two suns while trying to protect themselves and their loved ones from the marauding Tusken Raiders. A backwater planet on the edge of civilized space. And an unlikely place to find a Jedi Master in hiding, or an orphaned infant boy on whose tiny shoulders rests the future of a galaxy.

Known to locals only as “Ben,” the bearded and robed offworlder is an enigmatic stranger who keeps to himself, shares nothing of his past, and goes to great pains to remain an outsider. But as tensions escalate between the farmers and a tribe of Sand People led by a ruthless war chief, Ben finds himself drawn into the fight, endangering the very mission that brought him to Tatooine.

Ben—Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, hero of the Clone Wars, traitor to the Empire, and protector of the galaxy’s last hope—can no more turn his back on evil than he can reject his Jedi training. And when blood is unjustly spilled, innocent lives threatened, and a ruthless opponent unmasked, Ben has no choice but to call on the wisdom of the Jedi—and the formidable power of the Force—in his never-ending fight for justice.

From Booklist
This outstanding Star Wars novel arose from the author’s concept of a Star Wars comic series using the elements of a classic western. So we have a not-too-habitable frontier setting (Tatooine); a wealthy rancher with a hidden agenda (marrying a virtuous widow, among other things); the children of the widow and those of the rancher (mostly with more guts than sense); a bandit chieftain (Jabba the Hutt); marauding Indians (the Tuskan Raiders, very fully brought to life); the technology of farming in an environment that makes the Mojave Desert seem lush; and a host of life-forms ranging from krayt dragons to the pit-dwelling sarlaccs. Oh, and there is a drifter named Ben who wanders into town in the middle of all the conflicts and befriends the widow, though not as much as she would have liked. Deserves very high ranking among Star Wars fiction. --Roland Green

From the Author
Star Wars: Kenobi is a sweeping story that's part epic western, part high-stakes drama, part romance -- but it's all Star Wars, taking place in the early days of Obi-Wan's exile to Tatooine. The greatest hero in the galaxy faces his toughest challenge yet: He must stop being Obi-Wan -- and become Crazy Old Ben.

We've seen the Sith nursing their hatreds, patiently plotting their revenge; now we see a Jedi hero having to prepare for a long vigil, protecting the new hope of the galaxy. Tatooine is remote, which should suit the needs of an outsider wanting to remain anonymous. But it's also a close-knit community, and staying unnoticed isn't always easy when one has the public-spirited instincts of a Jedi!

A project I've been developing for years, Kenobi is in keeping with one of the themes I focused on in my Knights of the Old Republic, Knight Errant, and Lost Tribe of the Sith books: What does it mean to be a Jedi alone? Kenobi asks that question, and I'm excited that Random House has helped bring it to readers.

Beautiful. My new favorite SW book
By Trevor 1138
Let me begin this review by saying that I could not put this book down. Not because there was a galaxy-shaping event taking place, or a superweapon about to destroy a planet, but because i was so invested in the characters. Kenobi is easily the most human Star Wars book I have ever read, filled with characters that capture your affection instantly. The majority of the novel focuses on a relatively small squabble between a small town and the Tusken Raiders assaulting its people. However, by making his characters so real and so human John Jackson Miller makes you feel as if the universe itself hangs in the balance. It is this group of characters and their interactions with one another that shape the outlook and personality of a stranger in town known only as "Ben".

In my opinion, the book's greatest triumph is showing a softer side of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Because of the former Jedi Order's rules against showing emotion, we rarely see Kenobi's human side in Episodes I-III. In this novel, however, he is on his own and truly alone for the first time in his life, allowing him to consider new viewpoints and learn to know entirely new types of people. The reader is kept appraised of his internal struggle through brief meditations with his former Master Qui-Gon Jinn. As the book progresses, he learns more about himself, the galaxy, and where he fits in a changed universe.

Whether you are a diehard fan of Star Wars novels or someone who simply appreciates the movies, this book will take your breath away. In just under 400 pages, Miller takes readers on an emotional journey with new characters of his own creation and old favorites. Whether you are a newcomer to the galaxy or a longtime resident looking for a refreshing point of view, this book will not disappoint.

A Long Time ago on Tatooine.
By Scott Sloan
An excellent Star Wars western. A perfect blend of western, firefly, and star wars. It really shows what an author can do when he sets out to write a "different" star wars book. Not filled with epic space battles or force battling jedi. A simple yet complex story of a Jed Master in hiding doing his best to remain anonymous, and watch over his infant charge. He settles down in the wastes of the desert with his eopie, and soon discovers the settlement over the rise. Kenobi moves at a good pace, and is filled with rewarding characters. Really a good read in my opinion. However, the one problem i have with the book, and its author is the way that the sand people are portrayed. I like my sand people with a little more honor, and more pleasant social dynamic. Miller portrays the Tuskens as near savages who would gladly murder their own children less they bring them shame and live their entire life bundled up in rags as a show that life is unfair, and often times sucks for those that dwell among the sand. Like i said little too muslim extremist for my taste and have no place in a Star Wars book. A real downer. Overall though Kenobi offers up some great insight into the Jedi Masters thought process as he tries to survive on Tatooine. Last thing, we get some teases of Kenobi meditating and conversing with the dead master Qui-Gon as we saw a little of in the novelization of Revenge of the Sith. Sadly Qui-Gon never answers Kenobi and leaves him all alone to fend for himself and make the best decisions he can. Good read could have been a bit better.

Stellar Star Wars novel from start to finish!
By Ruth Anderson
With the loss of his once-promising apprentice still a raw wound, Obi-Wan Kenobi retreats to the remote planet of Tatooine, charged with guarding the galaxy's hope of redemption -- young Luke Skywalker. But until that far-off day that Luke should finally meet his destiny, Obi-Wan determines to adapt to a life without the sense of community and far-flung driving purpose that he once knew. But despite his determination to remain unnoticed and unremarked, descending into obscurity even on a backwater planet such as Tatooine proves harder to accomplish than the one-time hero of the Clone Wars ever expected. With Luke delivered into the custody of his uncle Owen Lars for safekeeping, Obi-Wan -- now calling himself Ben -- determines to settle into the role of watchman some distance away, resigned to a life of watchful meditation. Getting drawn into the lives of the settlers in the area is the last thing he needs...

Dannar's Claim, a trading post, inn, and bar, operated by Annileen Caldwell and her children Kallie and Jabe is the center of life at The Oasis, the hub around which those brave souls attempting to eek out a living from Tatooine's harsh environment seek community and connection. Dannar's Claim also houses the Settler's Call, the brainchild of moisture farmer and entrepreneur Orrin Gault. The Call is a subscription alarm service, consisting of a fund managed by Gault that coordinates the community response to attacks on subscribers by Tusken Raiders. As the best friend of Annileen's late husband, the lives of the Caldwells and the Gaults are inextricably entwined. When Tusken attacks spike, led by the raider known only as Plug-eye, tensions spike between Annileen and her long-time friend, made worse by her son's insistence on joining Orrin's dangerous raids. As tensions between the settlers and the Tuskens mount, a reclusive stranger named Ben arrives, one whose secrets may hold the secret to the settlers' salvation...if he isn't destroyed first.

It's been YEARS since I read a Star Wars extended universe novel. I cut my science fiction-loving teeth on the likes of Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, novels which captured not only the feel of the original trilogy, but were superb storytelling that -- long before Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced plans to make new films -- opened new chapters and introduced new characters to the Star Wars universe. Thanks to Disney's reboot of the extended universe canon, the original extended universe novels that I loved are now no longer canon, but classified as "Legends." However, stories like Kenobi are stellar examples of these books at their best -- illuminating new facets and eye-opening possibilities in the lives of beloved characters like Obi-Wan whose screentime only provides tantalizing hints of their history and potential.

Ewan MacGregor's portrayal of a young Obi-Wan was a highlight of the uneven (to say the least) prequel trilogy, and portrayal heavily influences Miller's characterization of the Jedi Master in Kenobi. I've always viewed Star Wars, particularly Episode IV, as a western in space, and this novel takes the concept of a western space opera and turns it into a full-fledged, old-fashioned classic western epic. Obi-Wan -- now the hermit Ben -- is the retired Gunslinger who wants nothing more than to be left in peace. Orrin, the rancher-cum-robber baron whose once pure motives have been corrupted by a drive to consolidate power and succeed, while Annileen is the determined widow transformed into a businesswoman, one whose once-bright dreams have long laid dormant until the arrival of a stranger, the compelling and mysterious Ben.

Miller knows the story beats of a classic western, and therein lies the success of his exploration of the unknown chapter of Ben's life on Tatooine prior to the arrival of a blue and white astromech droid bearing a desperate plea from a princess. This novel is everything I never knew I wanted from a Obi-Wan-centric story, everything I felt the prequels wasted with an actor of MacGregor's potential bringing a youthful Kenobi to life. Miller brings Kenobi to vibrant, three-dimensional life, delving into the insecurities, questions, and sense of failure he must have grappled with following Anakin's turn to the dark side. Here Miller explores if a man who once thrived on action, who was conditioned to never let a call for help go unanswered, adapt to the life of a hermit -- if such a withdrawal from a society in need is even possible.

I absolutely loved how this novel fleshes out not only Ben's character but the culture of Tatooine, a world that plays a critical role in the Star Wars universe as the home of Luke, the birthplace of Anakin, and the site of a rage-fueled massacre of Tuskens that sets Anakin on a galaxy-shaking trajectory, culminating in his transformation into Darth Vader. While Ben's characterization is a welcome addition to the extended universe, and the settlers are deftly sketched western mainstays, transplanted in space, its the characterization of the Tusken Raider culture that proves most illuminating. On film they are faceless, mindless bandits -- here the Tatooine natives have a culture, history, and drive, led by the formidable, fearless warrior Plug-eye, a Tusken with secrets that, if discovered, could reframe the Tuskens' age-old conflict with the settlers.

Kenobi is peppered with echoes of the films, from mentions of Jabba and the Lars family to suggestions of greater events unfolding in the galaxy as the Empire rises following the Jedi's fall. But putting the Star Wars references aside, Miller has delivered a cracking good western capable of standing beside classics of the genre by the likes of L'Amour and Mulford. This is why I love science fiction, why I adore the Star Wars world -- Kenobi is page-turning adventure filled with compelling characters, explosive action scenes, intrigue, and a classic showdown between good and evil. For all the talk of destiny in the canon, for me Star Wars has always been a story of choice, of choosing light, of choosing to be the best version of one's self., and Miller taps into the timeless nature of that battle. I can only hope that Miller one day gets to revisit this universe, but if not, here he's delivered one of the most satisfying reads in this extended universe -- and if, like me, you can't help but view it as canon...who can blame you? This is a Star Wars (and westerns) at their best -- entertaining, thought-provoking, and just plain fun.

Hidden history of Cuba's role in Southern Africa
By A Customer
Did you know that Cuba played a crucial role in the successful battle to end racist apartheid in South Africa? Probably not. In the United States, this is a non-fact. "How Far We Slaves Have Come" breaks the curtain of silence about these dramatic events. And it does so in the words of two of the principal figures involved -- Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro. They describe how combined Cuban and Angolan military forces defeated the South African army, which had invaded Angola, at the battle of Cuito Cuanavale. An army of Blacks and mestizos crushing the army of South Africa -- the supposed all-powerful bastion of white supremacy? This was not supposed to happen!
Coming after years of resistance and struggle by Blacks in South Africa, their defeat at Cuito Cuanavale demoralized the apartheid regime. As Nelson Mandela says in the book, "The defeat of the apartheid army was an inspiration to the struggling people inside South Africa! Without Cuito Cuanavale our organizations would not have been unbanned!...Cuito Cuanavale has been a turning point in the struggle to free the continent and our country from the scourge of apartheid!"
If you're interested in South Africa, Cuba, or just in history you're not supposed to know, you should read this book.

A necessary book for any revolutionary!
By A Customer
FROM THE BACK COVER:
On July 26, 1991, Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro spoke together at a rally of tens of thousands in Matanzas, Cuba. This book contains their speeches at that historic event. "There can be no greater cause in our era," Castro says, "than the one headed by the ANC." In Mandela's words, the role of Cuban internationalist volunteers in defeating South Africa's invasion of Angola was an "unparalleled contribution to African independence, freedom, and justice."
The struggles being waged by the people of South Africa and Cuba are today the most important examples for those everywhere seeking to rid the earth of racism and exploitation. Mandela and Castro explain why.
"We will ensure that sooner rather than later the poor and rightless will rule the land of their birth." (Nelson Mandela) "Where did injustice and inequality come from? Where did poverty and underdevelopment com from? Where did all these calamities come from if not from capitalism?" (Fidel Castro)

Great book by a great man, but with an unfortunate foreword
By Maurizio Giuliano
I am giving this book a 5-star rating, but this is not an easy choice for me to make. I am providing such rating, in view of the great and crucial subject the book is approaching, and how well it does so. It is (sadly) a contemporary subject, which needs to be studied by anyone interested in world politics - or in fact, by anyone wishing to stand for just causes. I am of course referring to the abhorrent issue of racial discrimination in South Africa, and elsewhere in the world. In this book Nelson Mandela - a personality whom I greatly esteem and admire, like most of us surely do - addresses the tragic issue of racial discrimination in his country, the "conspiracy of silence" by the West which, for half a century, let things be as they were. He also comments on some aspects of world capitalism which he believes contributed to such a situation in South Africa (views which I share only partially and with great reservations, yet which deserve our closest attention). Nelson Mandela has uncovered some evils of Western society, proposing views we may or may not agree with, but which are well substantiated and not mere 'propaganda'. However, I am deeply saddened to see a great freedom fighten like Nelson Mandela co-write this book, even if only in the form of a foreword, with communist dictator Fidel Castro. The circumstances are clear, and ultimately depend on us Westerners: it is entirely our fault, if Nelson Mandela had no other choice than recurr to aid from the socialist block, in order to fight for his country's long-overdue freedom. I can therefore reproach nothing to Mr. Mandela, and can only congratulate him for this book. Yet, I remain saddened by the presence in this same book of writings by one of the world's worst dictators, namely Fidel Castro of Cuba. What on Earth do these two authors have in common ? The first was the ultimate liberator of his Land. The latter is a bloody dictator who keeps millions of people in political prisons under inhuman conditions. In the book, I trust that any democratically-minded person will see a lot more sense in the writings of Mr. Mandela than those of his co-author. The latter, indeed, are likely to nauseate. All in all it is a great book, excellently written and edited, full of contens and analysis. By all means, it is a book to be read and you will enjoy it. But you would enjoy it even more, were Fidel Castro out of the way.

Review
'This is an extremely well-conceived book. It is concise, clear and straightforward, yet is rigorous in its coverage of the key areas of strategic management. It is well-balanced across strategic analysis, formulation and implementation and makes very good use of case studies and exercises questions. This book really is a breath of fresh air.' - Dr Emanuel Gomes, Principal Lecturer in Corporate Strategy, Coventry University, UK 'An innovative and practical approach to analysing the many elements that together form business strategy. There is no doubt that this text will engage the reader, as it offers many contemporary and practical examples that provide clarity and make sense of the many theoretical concepts, allowing the reader to develop a progressive and embedded understanding of the process.' - Kevin Burt, Lecturer in Strategy, Lincoln Business School, University of Lincoln, UK 'This book is a helpful addition to the library of core textbooks on business strategy. It covers all the main topic areas in a well written and thoughtful manner and is cleverly constructed in order to allow students to take their study further. The book not only offers case studies but identifies areas for debate and research which are important for students engaged at this level. Another pleasing feature is the brief biographies for some of the main management gurus which allow students to know something about the scholar as well as his or her ideas. This book will be useful for any final year undergraduate or postgraduate student studying business strategy.' - Dr Jim Martin Keane, Director of Studies, Business Management Course Group, University of Gloucestershire, UK

Talking to the Other Side: A History of Modern Spiritualism and Mediumship: A Study of the Religion, Science, Philosophy and Mediums that E

Since its birth in 1848, Spiritualism as a religion, science, and philosophy has experienced great highs and lows. At the center of this purely American-made modern-religious movement are "mediums"-the people who are able to communicate, in some way, with spirit entities that are no longer on the earth plane.Based on three years of on-site investigation, and a plethora of data and research collected on the modern Spiritualist movement in America, Talking to the Other Side focuses upon the ethno-religious aspects of the religion, mediumship, and the mediums themselves. The first four chapters offer an expansive review of the history of religion in America, mediumship, and the Spiritualist movement. Chapters 5?7 comprise the research and data that were compiled and analyzed based on fieldwork analysis, a comprehensive questionnaire, personal interviews, and published literature on the topic of Spiritualism and mediumship.According to Spiritualist mediums, "people don't die, bodies do." Talking to the Other Side offers a contemporary look into the lives and backgrounds of the mediums who bridge this world and the Spirit world, connecting those who have passed over with those they left behind.

Readable, informative history and Precepts of Spiritualism
By L. Kamada
I found this book to be a very readable and informative history of the Spiritualist Movement in USA, something of which I had previously known almost nothing about. I particularly recommend this book for those wanting to know of the history of made-in-America religions, not only Spiritualism. As well, I also recommend this book for those wanting to know more about the precepts of Spiritualism itself, an extremely unique and interesting religion, situated in science that offers an alternative to institutionalized religions which often do not allow for a personal approach to spiritual development, as Spiritualism does. Based on Dr. Leonard's Ph.D. thesis, the last few chapters answer his research questions gleaned from a questionnaire survey which was qualitatively analyzed in the voices of his participants, the Spiritualists themselves. Along with extensive appendices and various notes throughout, this book is a unique contribution to an area that has not yet been well documented. Dr. Leonard's insider view as a novice Spiritualist himself, to which he converts during the span of the survey, makes this book all the more attractive.

Fascinating! Amazing! Great personal stories from Mediums!
By Patti J. Stice
With all the increasing attention on the supernatural, mediums, occult, and metaphysical possibilities, Dr. Leonard's "Talking to the Other Side" presents the extraordinary history of Spiritualism as a religion in America. He explores the early beginnings of the Fox sisters listening to unbelievable rappings, to the spread of seances across America, and to the establishment of Spiritualism as a religion, science, and philosophy in 1848. In addition to the historical text, Dr. Leonard had rare access in meeting with practicing Spiritualist mediums during years of field research. Several chapters reveal stimulating and mind expanding conversations from personal interviews with Spiritualist mediums. If you are searching for more knowledge about mediumship and spiritual growth, this is the book for you. Dr. Leonard's book is not only educational but enriches the reader by exploring the extraordinary and illuminating stories from Spiritualist mediums who continue to talk to the Spirit world. This book is a must read!

Dr. Leonard's book is excellent!
By Franklin S. Takei
Dr. Leonard's book is excellent! It constitutes a sorely needed updating of the religion of Spiritualism as practiced in the United States. The book is in two parts: a) a brief history of religion in the United States with special attention to the origins and development of Spiritualism; b) discussion of the research instrument which was used to attain relevant information about the practice of mediumship from certified mediums who reside and/or practice in three Spiritualist camps and a careful appraisal of the information gained from this instrument.
While the history of Spiritualism and the practice of mediumship have been discussed in monographs, books and television documentaries, Dr. Leonard's book is arguably the first of its kind to present information and assessments about mediums as such....their backgrounds, personality profiles, steps taken to become certified as mediums, and the kinds of mediumship that are practiced. Further, the appendix includes interviews conducted with some of the mediums and relevant information about Spiritualist associations.
I am a resident (more than 20 years) of one of the Spiritualist camps (Lily Dale) in which mediumship is practiced. Dr. Leonard's book confirms the impressions that I have gained over these years about mediums and mediumship.
