After Eden: The Evolution of Human Domination, by Kirkpatrick Sale

When did the human species turn against the planet that we depend on for survival? Human industry and consumption of resources have altered the climate, polluted the water and soil, destroyed ecosystems, and rendered many species extinct, vastly increasing the likelihood of an ecological catastrophe. How did humankind come to rule nature to such an extent? To regard the planet’s resources and creatures as ours for the taking? To find ourselves on a seemingly relentless path toward ecocide?

In After Eden, Kirkpatrick Sale answers these questions in a radically new way. Integrating research in paleontology, archaeology, and anthropology, he points to the beginning of big-game hunting as the origin of Homo sapiens’ estrangement from the natural world. Sale contends that a new, recognizably modern human culture based on the hunting of large animals developed in Africa some 70,000 years ago in response to a fierce plunge in worldwide temperature triggered by an enormous volcanic explosion in Asia. Tracing the migration of populations and the development of hunting thousands of years forward in time, he shows that hunting became increasingly adversarial in relation to the environment as people fought over scarce prey during Europe’s glacial period between 35,000 and 10,000 years ago. By the end of that era, humans’ idea that they were the superior species on the planet, free to exploit other species toward their own ends, was well established.

After Eden is a sobering tale, but not one without hope. Sale asserts that Homo erectus, the variation of the hominid species that preceded Homo sapiens and survived for nearly two million years, did not attempt to dominate the environment. He contends that vestiges of this more ecologically sound way of life exist today—in some tribal societies, in the central teachings of Hinduism and Buddhism, and in the core principles of the worldwide environmental movement—offering redemptive possibilities for ourselves and for the planet.

Our Savage Neighbors: How Indian War Transformed Early America, by Peter Silver

"No recent work of history...has presented such a distinctive―and beautifully resonant―authorial voice."―John Demos, Yale University

The colonial communities of eighteenth-century America were perhaps the most racially, ethnically, and religiously mixed societies on earth. Lutherans and Presbyterians, Quakers, Catholics, and Covenentors, the Irish, the German, the French, the Welsh―groups that rarely intermingled in Europe―were thrown together when they confronted the American countryside. Rather than embracing the inescapable and ever-increasing diversity, the European settler communities had their very existence threatened by the tensions and fears among their own groups. Only through "Indian-hating"―in both military and rhetorical forms―could the splintered colonists find a common ground. In potent, graceful prose that sensitively unearths the social complexity and tangled history of colonial relations, Peter Silver gives us an astonishingly vivid picture of eighteenth-century America. He straddles cultural history, political history, social history, and ethnohistory to offer groundbreaking insights into the seminal forces that continue to shape the United States today. 15 illustrations

From Publishers Weekly
The mid-Atlantic colonies of 18th-century America were home to a remarkable diversity of immigrants—Germans, Quakers, Moravians, Englishmen and French, among others. In this exhaustively researched and elegantly written study, Princeton historian Silver asks how all the Europeans lived side by side. The answer, Silver says, is that they were solidified into a single people during the Seven Years' War in the 1750s by the fear of Indian attack. The motley Europeans morphed into white people, defined in opposition to Indians. (An intriguing appendix reveals that colonial newspapers tended to use the adjective white to describe people principally during bouts of Indian war.) But not everyone with pale skin became part of this new people—the most fascinating sections of the book explore why some European settlers, such as Quakers (who were accused of betraying white people's interests), were excluded from the collective. Silver also shows how fears of Indian menace were taken up during the Revolution: patriots shored up a distinctive American identity and claimed that the British were engaging in Indian-like atrocities, such as scalping and cannibalism. Silver's study will change the way scholars think about whiteness and will reshape our understanding of how 13 distinct colonies were knit together into one nation. 13 illus., 2 maps. (Nov.)

An Exciting Look into the Indian Wars
By RJS0607
(Note: This is a shorter version of a professional review I wrote for "Our Savage Neighbors")

Silver's "Our Savage Neighbors" explores the changes British Colonial America experienced during the Indian Wars of the eighteenth century, including chances in colonial society and colonial outlooks on race and class (an "anti-Indian sublime"). Silver uses excellent examples and narratives of real everyday people to present his evidence to the reader and he backs up these examples with ample citations. Every claim he makes, he proves with a source.
However, while Silver's book is well received and liked in professional circles, the heavy research and citations may turn off the casual reader.

What could have made it better for me
By Melody Daggerhart
Notes of Interest:

This is a follow-up purchase, so I will be referencing my review of the first book in this series for comparison.

What could have made it better for me:

This book makes use of the time travel portal again, but very briefly to the 1980’s. So, I’ve decided to knock the “historic” genre from my description. This is a fantasy book with adventures that include time travel, but time travel is not core to the plot objectives. Perhaps that changes in later books, but in the first two time travel is not what’s important.

There were a few minor technical errors that got missed in editing.

The antagonist, Shinzan, still didn’t catch my interest as a character with personality and depth. He strikes me as an immortal, all-powerful Sauron-type ruler that you know must be defeated in the end or he will destroy the world (more so than he already has). But even after knowing a little about his background, he remains the Big Bad off in the distance. Again, maybe that will change over the series. I understand the need to build up to these things if the story takes place over several volumes as an arc. But as of book 2, he still strikes me as one-dimensional.

The only other thing that distracted me was the predictable love triangle between the two women and leading the man. The way Book 1 ended regarding two female characters, I knew they would be one of the plots in Book 2. And that assumption was helped by the presence of a female mage on the cover. The girl that was too young becomes an adult, and the girl who was frozen becomes thawed. Both want the last remaining mage in their kingdom. It’s not that this subplot was poorly done, it just played out exactly the way I thought it would. And as a woman, I admit I tend to dislike “catty” behavior among female characters because it often replays female stereotypes. It tends to be a division between the doting, “I will love you forever no matter what because I love you!” playful kitten and the “I want you in my bed” manipulative slut. And whether it’s two women jealous over one man, or two men jealous over one woman, at some point those kinds of plots end up feeling childish and cliché because the character being fought over becomes a static trophy, rather than a genuine person in a genuine relationship. Same goes for the two who are fighting. They become static stereotypes and stop growing as individuals. … Jealousy and love triangles do realistically happen. It’s why they’re classic tropes that we keep coming back to again and again. But the more low-key the better, in terms of telling a unique story … in my opinion.

On a related note, this book had some graphic sex in it. Graphic sex in fantasy novels doesn’t bother me, as long as it’s necessary to the plot or handled in a way that doesn’t distract from it. I think in this case the approach was necessary to the plot, but the language felt out of place within the overall tone of the book. It felt like something unexpectedly switched in the writing style, but it was brief and limited to one scene, so it didn’t affect the overall content.

What I liked about it:

This volume in the series is primarily about the “mage training” that Ethan goes through after discovering he is the only remaining mage in the kingdom. Or, at least he is the only mage powerful enough to defeat the emperor. And this is a land where magic is suppressed except for the emperor’s use of it, so even if someone of lower class can do magic, their lives are forfeit if they are caught. So between his training and his quest to find the dragons, that is what carries the meat of the plot. The dragons are the highlight of the book, probably because they are rare in this setting, and they are handled in an unusual manner. They are on the verge of extinction, so they are both accessible, yet not accessible, to aid in the coming battle. Ethan learns the truth about the emperor’s nature. And he is shown enigmatic secrets that are full of plot potential, from dwarves as well as mages and the dragons themselves, for the upcoming quest to defeat the bad guy.

His relationships with the two women do not overtake the main plot, and the triangle does eventually work itself out, which I appreciated. To be able to end a love triangle in a manner where all parties win is good (and different, because usually there is a sore loser).
The most interesting part of this book, to me, did not get enough “air time”. It’s the relationship between Ethan and his best friend, Markus. Markus is a deeply conflicted character, and that makes him more multi-dimensional. The ugly tasks of the plot get dumped on him, but he shoulders the burden assuming this is simply his task because it’s the kind of person he has become. So, his struggles between being a good guy and a bad guy who happens to be helping the good guys was interesting.

In spite of what I said earlier about the antagonist being a bit flat, I did appreciate seeing his capacity for evil exposed. He is spoken about by other characters as a cruel, selfish tyrant. And he is shown more in this book than the first, which is why I give the benefit of the doubt to deeper development in the future. It’s hard to create evil characters who truly do repulse the reader … because killing someone isn’t enough to earn that badge. Maybe it’s because we expect deaths in action/ adventure/ fantasy type stories. So, the evil that defines an effective villain is conveyed more in the “how” and “why” that death and suffering take place. I am now convinced that Shinzan truly is a cruel and corrupt villain, rather than having to accept rumors. The question now is whether there is any possibility for conflict within himself regarding his own behavior.

And I still appreciate the author’s portrayal of the dwarven race, pushing them beyond the most common tropes into being credible characters with depth and imaginative attributes. A great quote to share from Dwarven king Ganix: “War is a wicked thing. It can make monsters of all of us.”

Recommendation:

I liked the book overall, but I think I liked the first book better. This one felt slower and a bit more off-topic. As of this writing, I’m undecided whether to buy the third book. The book was good, but I can tell the interest has dipped enough that I need to reach for something different for now. Book 3 will probably go back in my TBR list for later.

Proofread please

I am an avid and prodigious reader; a current high school Drama teacher; a former high school English teacher; a former College Theatre Professor; a professional stage actor, director, and producer; and a former government contractor technical writer and editor. The issue I have with this series (and with many other books that I have read recently) is the lack of thorough proofreading. Too many errant, missing, or incorrectly tensed words detract from my experience while in the universe of whatever book I am reading. For those reasons, I had to chop the fifth star.

I love the long term foreshadowing in these books
By Amazon Customer
I love the long term foreshadowing in these books, but it starts to get too sexual. Don't get me wrong, I love a good love story. But the reason I read this book series is for the unreal and magical world of dragons and elfs.

Worth the cost
By ragsrosie
This was well worth buying. After being out of school for 30+ years I needed to get this book for a refresher. My original H/N book got ruined during several moves and I always wanted another one. The chapter on anesthetic was very helpful as an added bonus. You never realize how much you forget until you start reading the curriculum from your major. I didn't need the most current edition so the price was perfect for me.

Review
Night Owls Review - TOP PICK To Dare the Duke of Dangerfield
Caitlin was about to lose her birthright and family home. Her no account father had gambled away the estate. She had only one recourse, she would make a wager with the new owner. Harlow Telford, Duke of Dangerfield had the prize he'd wanted for so long. Finally, his half-brother would have his due. But Harlow was intrigued by Caitlin and decided that he'd have her too. He accepted her dare but never contemplated that he might lose, if not the bet then maybe his heart.

What a fun and enjoyable read! Caitlin and Harlow are fantastic. They play off each other and provide not only humor but sensuality to an intriguing plot. Harlan's friends also add to the story. Although it does take a bit more serious turn in the last part of the book, this was an entertaining read throughout. Great dialogue and sizzling chemistry round out this delightful story.

From the Author
To Dare the Duke of Dangerfield, is a FINALIST in the Kindle Book Review Indie Romance Book of the Year 2012.

Thanks everyone!

From the Inside Flap
Caitlin sensed the moment when Harlow first noticed her arrival. The fine hairs at her nape bristled.

"I'm pleased to see you know how to keep time. You're early." He was standing too close behind her, the low timbre of his voice coaxing her to turn round.

She did so. Slowly. Wanting the full impact of her dress to overcome him. When she finally faced him, she looked up into his eyes, her composure complete.

He gave a choked cough. "Good God, how's a man to concentrate with those staring at him all night? And I thought I preferred you in trousers." His eyes narrowed. "Well played, Lady Caitlin."

"Thank you." She felt a hint of smile crease her lips.

It soon disappeared--shattered--when he reached out and trailed his fingers over the creamy swells of her breasts. She batted his hand away. His fingers returned, sweeping over the skin.

"What do you think you are doing?" she asked breathlessly. "Stop it."

"I'm evening the score," he almost growled.

Sexy, enjoyable novella
By Lisa Wolff
Lady Caitlin Southall can not believe that her home, her mothers home which is being held in a trust for her, was lost in a card game. She becomes even more frustrated when she learns the most notorious rake and her neighbor, Harlow Telford, Duke of Dangerfield is the one that won her home and will not return it like a gentleman when he learns of her situation. Oh no. Caitlin's temper gets the best of her and she challenges Harlow to the best of three events to see who wins the home--but her loss will come with her losing herself in his bed.

Harlow is troubled when he hears that the home he won was being held in a trust but he has his own personal reasons for needing to own Caitlins home and he has no intention of losing the bet. He knows what must happen after Caitlin loses and he hopes it will be a win/win situation for them both but in the process he needs to trump the lovely lady in cards, baking and horse racing all while trying to hold on to his heart.

This was my first experience reading Bronwen Evans and I really enjoyed it. The story worked well with the length, about half the length of a full length novel, and I didn't feel like the romance was rushed. There is a back story of our couple knowing each other previously and that always helps move a novella along for me. I really enjoyed Caitlin and her passion for securing her future and her boldness but who I really enjoyed was Harlow. I don't really want to give away much of the storyline as it came as a pleasant surprise, but I was really surprised at the decenty of him underneath his rakish persona. Watching the sparks fly between this couple was fun and leads to some very steamy encounters until they finally seal the deal. However, Harlow is still keeping quite a big secret from Cate and when it is finally revealed it leads to heartbreak and sets up for tragedy. The only thing that sort of bothered me about the story was the ending. It has a double whammy that is a bit over dramatic and I'm not sure it needed to be in there. I understood the first punch but the second tied everything up a little to neatly. This was the only part where I felt a longer story would have been welcome.

Overall though I really enjoyed this story. It is fast paced and filled with sharp barbs between our couple and plenty of heated passion all while gradually falling in love with each other and learning to appreciate what the other had to offer . The supporting characters (two of Harlow's friends whom I hope are the next two books) add a bit of humor to the story as well. If you are looking for a great way to spend an afternoon, Harlow and Cate's romance is one that is sure to heat up your blood, make you laugh and end with a sigh. 4 stars

A fun quote:

"Good God, how's a man to concentrate with those staring at him all night? And I thought I preferred you in trousers. Well, played Lady Southall."

enjoyed it
By Romantic Fool
Caitlin is one gutsy lady. I loved her chin-up bravery. Harlow is a dispicable rake. He's also really hot. For Caitlin, but not in an honorable way.

I have to say that I enjoyed this read. BUT, this is what I would tell the author:

1-Scene with his mistress on his lap as he tells Caitlin he wants her, ICK!!!
2-Redeeming a rake takes more initial suggestions of his goodness earlier in the book. To me it felt like half way through the book
the author hit a switch that said REFORMED! and poof! we as readers are supposed to believe it.
3-The affliction that hits Caitlin a bit to over-dramatic, and a bit to quickly resolved. A miracle!!
4-Kind of got to corny for me.

Still some really great scenes, dialogue between the characters.

If your looking for a quick romantic read, go for it, entertaining but NOT fabulous.

Smart, sexy romp
By CJ Douglas
A novella often runs the risk of being too short for real character development, but the first of Bronwen Evan's Wicked Wagers series creates strong, believable characters right from the start. Lady Caitlin Southall is outspoken and independent, but you never see her as too modern; she feels like a genuine Regency woman. The Duke himself, Harlow Telford, is delicious - a sexy blend of raw male power and emotional vulnerability. It is clear why he would be attracted to a strong woman like Caitlin - it's good for a man to be told he's a dick sometimes! I loved the wagers, especially the cake baking contest, which injected humour and made both characters seem even more human and likeable. All of the supporting cast is very well drawn, too, adding depth and tension to the plot. The pacing was excellent - it romped along, but had enough softer, more intimate moments for you to catch your breath. And it's sexy as hell. I look forward to Ms Evans' next Wicked Wager!

Why I Left Goldman Sachs: A Wall Street Story, by Greg Smith

On March 14, 2012, more than three million people read Greg Smith's bombshell Op-Ed in the New York Times titled "Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs." The column immediately went viral, became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, and drew passionate responses from former Fed chairman Paul Volcker, legendary General Electric CEO Jack Welch, and New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg. Mostly, though, it hit a nerve among the general public who question the role of Wall Street in society -- and the callous "take-the-money-and-run" mentality that brought the world economy to its knees a few short years ago. Smith now picks up where his Op-Ed left off.

His story begins in the summer of 2000, when an idealistic 21-year-old arrives as an intern at Goldman Sachs and learns about the firm's Business Principle #1: Our clients' interests always come first. This remains Smith's mantra as he rises from intern to analyst to sales trader, with clients controlling assets of more than a trillion dollars.

From the shenanigans of his summer internship during the technology bubble to Las Vegas hot tubs and the excesses of the real estate boom; from the career lifeline he received from an NFL Hall of Famer during the bear market to the day Warren Buffett came to save Goldman Sachs from extinction-Smith will take the reader on his personal journey through the firm, and bring us inside the world's most powerful bank.

Smith describes in page-turning detail how the most storied investment bank on Wall Street went from taking iconic companies like Ford, Sears, and Microsoft public to becoming a "vampire squid" that referred to its clients as "muppets" and paid the government a record half-billion dollars to settle SEC charges. He shows the evolution of Wall Street into an industry riddled with conflicts of interest and a profit-at-all-costs mentality: a perfectly rigged game at the expense of the economy and the society at large.

After conversations with nine Goldman Sachs partners over a twelve-month period proved fruitless, Smith came to believe that the only way the system would ever change was for an insider to finally speak out publicly. He walked away from his career and took matters into his own hands. This is his story.

From Booklist
Goldman Sachs, the “Rolls Royce of investment banks,” has remained in business for more than 140 years, primarily due to a strict set of moral values that revolve around the principle that the “clients’ interests always come first.” These were the principles that were in place when Smith joined the firm as a junior analyst in the early 2000s. He describes entering an extremely competitive environment in which only the upper echelon of the best and the brightest survive, in which confidentiality, honesty, and integrity are fundamental to every business decision, and in which justice can be swift and brutal. A well-liked and promising study, Smith rose quickly through the ranks, witnessing firsthand the immediate effects of the tech bubble, the 9/11 attacks, and the housing meltdown. Through the turmoil, Goldman Sachs remained the one bellwether securities firm that could not be toppled, but inside the firm, the culture was changing. Rather than simply advising and trading for customers, Sachs began to resemble a hedge fund, doing proprietary trading and often taking positions opposite those they recommended to clients, a huge conflict of interest. Ultimately, the climate eroded so badly that only the largest commissions, known as “elephant trades,” became the driving force for everything the company aimed for, as clients’ interests fell completely by the wayside. This finally led to Smith’s famous March 14, 2012, op-ed for the New York Times, titled “Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs.” Despite Smith’s pointed criticism of Goldman Sachs, he is otherwise remarkably kind to the company. There is not much mud to sling, but what we find is a personal tale of one person caught up in a wave of greed, betrayal, and a complete disregard for the standards that had made Goldman Sachs the most trusted name on Wall Street. --David Siegfried

Review
A portrait, in Proustian detail, of a world and a mentality that is utterly alien, and should be infuriating, to most of us on Main Street.

-- Mark Gongloff, Huffington Post

A personal tale of one person caught up in a wave of greed, betrayal, and a complete disregard for the standards that had made Goldman Sachs the most trusted name on Wall Street.

-- David Siegfried, Booklist

[Greg Smith] did what we would all hope that our own banker would do: he spoke out publicly about something that was wrong.

-- Hamilton Nolan, Gawker

An insider's take on Goldman Sachs strikes a nerve....it provides a rare inside look into a career path to which many aspire: from nothing to Wall Street affluence. It will also be read because of its characterisation of Goldman's integrity. Where once it profited from helping clients prosper, the bank shifted, Mr Smith contends, into an entity that profited from clients.

-- The Economist

...Smith has written a field guide to the culture of Goldman Sachs and a fly-on-the-wall account of Wall Street on the skids.

--USA Today

The author's personal account of the many facets of daily life at Goldman Sachs gives his memoir the power of persuasion and conviction.

-- Kirkus

Excellent and 100% Accurate Portrayal of Wall Street Excess - Spot On!
By JK
Well written and completely accurate portrayal of the excesses and improprieties of Wall Street culture. I can say firsthand from my own experience on the Goldman trading floor, Greg Smith must have really held back in this book. There are so many more outrageous stories and examples that could have gone into this book. But nonetheless, I don't think the book was meant to be an SEC complaint with specific indictments but a mere snapshot outline of what is wrong with Wall Street today, and Goldman Sachs in particular. The book reads easy, does a great job explaining some of the trader terminology, and is really best suited for those with little to no exposure to Wall Street who are looking for a "no B.S." account of what is plaguing the institutions behind our global financial system.

A Good Read but I expected more focus on Bigger Issues
By epublisher
First, the book should have been titled "My career at Goldman Sachs before and after the financial crisis" since the author's reason for leaving the firm occupies only the last quarter of the book. Too much of the book is spent on personal anecdotes on individuals, client stories and parties. If the purpose was to open GS to outsiders who care about the personalities of VPs, MPs, Associates etc., then the book is highly informative. I had hoped that the book would also offer an insider's view of the big "financial crisis" issues: such as:

* Why was Goldman operated as a hedge fund with leverage levels that made it vulnerable to collapse?

* Why does the firm still have a net derivative exposure 7 times its risk-based capital, the highest among all federally chartered banks and seven times greater than Morgan Stanley?

* Why was it OK for the taxpayers to cover Goldman's counterparty risk with AIG derivatives?

* If Goldman and others are operating a rigged casino to fatten up partner and associate bonuses (total 2012 GS salary, bonus and perks spending was reported to be $13 billion, or about $400,000 per employee), then should the government ban proprietary trading?

* Have the hundreds of trillions of dollars in derivative products peddled by Goldman and others merely set the stage for a worldwide financial system meltdown when the Central Banks cannot stop future runs on the counterparties and banks?

These and other issues related to conflicts of interest, sleazy ethics and non-fiduciary conduct are of greater importance for reforming the financial services industry.

I give the author a great deal of credit for writing the book and op-ed piece since he is very cautious by nature and would even ask colleagues for advice on simple things, like whether to attend a colleague's bachelor party. He is also an honorable man who appears sincere but in many ways still sees Wall Street people as basically good but that they work within a corrupt system.

Another view of the conduct he reveals (e.g., giving self-serving recommendations, taking the "axe off" Goldman's balance sheet) is that GS staff are acting like con men. People who embezzle thousands of dollars get multi-year jail terms while Wall Street traders who intentionally fleece clients out of millions of dollars walk away rich after a few years of pirating.

I hope that this Mr. Smith can come to Washington and work for the structural reforms that are desperately needed. The author wrote many market profiles while working for the firm; perhaps, future books and articles can explore solutions for the problems that remain. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into the hidden world of Goldman Sachs.

The knowledge of good and evil
By A dad
The book almost could be titled, "Why I Left Government." It's about a career in big finance. After years working with elite financial professionals, Greg Smith's values came in conflict with the business. Customers and the public get disrespected because we're often gullible when it comes to financial instruments.

Goldman Sachs (GS) had a storied and honorable tradition. Things changed during Smith's 12-year tenure. GS's corporate culture now reflects the corruption and cynicism of our society, only on a scale defying imagination.

Be warned that the author, in my view, is not a natural storyteller. It's easier to stay with a story when the characters are brought to life. My review is based on the audible version which is unabridged and narrated by the author. I always appreciate it when the author is the narrator. Smith's personal style is that he doesn't speak with a lot of passion.

Smith started as a competitive academic high-performer when he was 21-years old in 2000. He describes the selection process as if coaching college students to make the cut with big-name firms. Candidates get subjected to extreme pressure and embarrassment. Smith later learned GS did this to assess candidates for integrity, as it's tempting to make stuff up under pressure in an effort to save face. Despite the state of the stock market at the time with the dot-com crash under way, those were idealistic and innocent times compared to now. In some respects, Smith's book is sincerely flattering to GS.

I feel that Smith's turning point came when his best friend Lex asked one simple question. Lex was concerned about Congress passing TARP and bailing out Goldman Sachs along with other elite firms. Lex asked, "What about the other people whose 401Ks are getting decimated. Where's their bailout?" This question planted the seed. Smith began to understand that big winnings at GS were due to its quasi-government status and not delivery of superior service to clients.

The former Goldman Sachs chief lobbyist, Mark Patterson had been brought in as chief of staff to Timothy Geithner at Treasury. GS's link to the welfare of its clients was gone. GS was in the DC power structure so realities on the ground had quietly shifted. Taxpayers made good dollar-for-dollar the enormous AIG bailout that went mainly to GS. The public would simply have to wait down the line for some kind of bailout, if it ever comes. And if it comes, John Q. Citizen might not immediately recognize it because trust was wiped out. That's what Smith seems to be trying to repair.

Smith's depiction of GS tracks with the Wall Street culture famously described in Liar's Poker, by Michael Lewis. Entry into the culture of Goldman was exactly like entry into Salomon Brothers per Lewis. Young candidates were treated almost as dismissively as military recruits in boot camp/basic training. You're ready to graduate from the training when you can verbally stand up to your tormentors without violating the culture rules. I was fascinated.

Smith's account lends support to some extent to Robert Kiyosaki's assertions that GS runs the government. Kiyosaki is author of Rich Dad Poor Dad. I got the impression that GS can get the rules changed in its favor. Clearly Smith's book gives GS partners something to worry about though. No client likes to be taken for a sucker. GS once had a stellar reputation, seems so long ago.
