About the Author
Baird T. Spalding, whose name became legend in metaphysical circles during the first half of the 20th century, played an important part in introducing to the Western world knowledge of the Masters, who are assisting and guiding the destiny of mankind. Born in England, at age four he went to India. At age seventeen he finished the University and went to California where he stayed two years. He then traveled to Heidelberg, Germany and studied for eight years and then returned to California for post-graduate work in Archaeology at Berkeley and Stanford.
`After years of working with publisher Douglas DeVorss to write and promote the Life & Teaching series, Spalding died in 1953 in Arizona.

In this book, Gabriel, a former assassin for Israel's foreign intelligence service, the Mossad (which translates into English as "The Institution") retired after the murders of his wife and son to lead a quiet life as an art restorer, one who fixes the wounded past. Gabriel's ex-boss, Ari Shamron, an Israeli spymaster a la George Smiley but more treacherous, convinces Gabriel to leave his sheltered hermitage to hunt down Tariq, the assassin who killed Gabriel's family, before he can kill again. In an exquisitely wrought plot of treachery and counter-treachery, Silva explores the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from many, many angles.

I don't read spy fiction as a genre. I don't read anything as a genre. I read great writers, pretty much no matter what they write. I've read a lot of John Le Carre, and one of the few criticisms that I have of his work is that his spies play a gentleman's game. However, Le Carre's spies are deeply human and British.

Silva's spies are not gentlemen, and this is no gentlemen's game. This is hard and dirty intelligence work by one of the hardest and dirtiest intelligence services on the planet. The Mossad is charged with keeping tiny Israel's formidable opponents at bay, and you don't do that by playing fair. Gabriel's Mossad plays entirely unfairly, as it must, as it does in real life. In this book, Jacqueline/Sarah is used as a "honey trap," and Silva lightly explores what it does to a woman to prostitute oneself for a good cause. Silva does exaggerate some of the Mossad's successes, which he does not need to do because the Mossad is very successful without Silva's burnishing.

Silva's plotting is as intricate as a chess game, albeit a game where each of the chess pieces has a deeply felt personality, background, and damaged psyche such that they refuse to move where the gamester wants them to and take on a life of their own. Another thing that I like about Silva's work is that, while Gabriel is the central character and our guide, each of Silva's characters has his/her own agenda and life and is capable of growing, changing direction, and surprising the reader. One feels when reading Silva's books that the book is built to elucidate several characters, not merely one central character.

Silva proves he is still a pro...

Gabriel Allon is "the Kill Artist"; a former assassin who worked clandestinely for the Israeli government. When we first meet him he is living in a remote English seaside village and working as an art restorer, a cover he used frequently during his covert operations. He is soon called out of retirement by his former boss, Ari Shamron, head of Israeli intelligence, and a calculating man with his own agenda...one that may cost Gabriel his life. Ari needs Gabriel's talents to track down Tariq, an Palestinian assassin whose killing rampage is threatening the Middle East peace negotiations. Tariq and Gabriel have met before when Gabriel killed Tariq's brother in a very brutal manner, and Tariq avenged that death with a killing of his own...Gabriel's wife and son, making this a story of international intrigue and personal revenge. The stage is now set for a major showdown, but they must first cover three continents and weave through an array of cultures and characters to find each other. Gabriel is assisted by his former intelligence co-worker, a beautiful French girl named Jacqueline, whose family was killed in the Holocaust. Jacqueline is hesitant to join Gabriel on this assignment, but in the end it is love that prevails, and she plunges head first into Tariq's lair, a deadly trap that Gabriel may not be able to get her out of in time to save her life.
What I love about Daniel Silva is his smooth and uncomplicated style. He has a "rhythm" to his writing that hooks you somewhere in the beginning and stays with you long after you finish the book. It took me a little longer to warm up to these characters, probably because there isn't a lot happening in the way of relationships as there is in his other book _The Mark Of The Assassin_. Everyone is hiding behind their own specific job and agenda. They're all business. Still, the plot is riveting and the pace is solid.
4 and 1/2 stars. Highly recommended. His protagonist doesn't quite involve the readers as in his past works but this is definitely worth a buy.

A Rollercoaster, in two diffeerent ways...

This book is truly a rollercoaster!! The plot similar to the popular amusent park thrill ride because it keeps you on the edge of your seat through an array of dips and turns. Unfortunately, the writing style is also rollercoaster-esque. When Silva is on his game, the writing is brilliant: smooth, hilarious, and affecting. When he isn't (which seems all too often during the middle chapters), the writing is choppy and predictable. I'm a humongous Silva fan though, believe me! His plots have always been easy to follow and The Kill Artist is no different (Definitely a plus!). Hopefully, Silva will keep producing easy-to-follow thriller novels but will keep the rollercoasting to simply the plot, not the writing style as well!!

This is the book I've been wanting. I have a number of books on preserving foods, including the "Bible" of preserving, "The Art of Fermentation." This book is so full of useful information, including how to prevent things going wrong, how much of what you need (as opposed to Sandor Katz's saying, "these days I just throw it in." (NOT useful.) In any case, Shockey's book is a pleasure to read, easy to use, has wonderful photos and illustrations, and ideas for preserving that are new to me. On top of all that, it is fun to read. What more do you want? Buy this book.

A-Z compendium of veggie fermentations

Great resource - am an 'experienced' fermenter but this book would work for beginners as well. it is a nice A-Z compendium of how to ferment (and when not to ferment) your fave veggies. I use a slightly different method to prevent mold, and i use a water lock but the recipes are well thought-out and solid. especially helpful is the 'scum' identifier section at the back of the book. and yes, there are pictures sprinkled throughout- a must for me, a visual cook.

An Inspirational Kick Start!

I'm not exactly new to fermenting, but I was stuck - doing the same, comfortable fermentations - until I got this book. It is so easy to understand, so simple to find a recipe for whatever veggie you are currently harvesting, and so inspirational in the combinations of spices and veggies that I found myself immediately looking for more crocks! I got started right away with the Thai-inspired Baby Pak Choi recipe and after finding some giant beets hiding under the cucumber leaves, the Curried Golden Beets. All so yummy!

I can see spending the entire next harvest season experimenting my way through the recipes, and then enjoying one of the cocktails at the end of the day. A great book and refreshing addition to my fermentation library!

Noted Kentucky author Ron Elliott has proven himself to be an excellent researcher and storyteller in his previous books, including "Inside the Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire," "Assassination at the Statehouse," "The Silent Brigade" and "Through the Eyes of Lincoln." These talents shine once more as he chronicles the life of Kentuckian Franklin Sousley who was one of six marines immortalized in a photo of the raising of an American Flag on Iwo Jima, an island in the Pacific Ocean, near the end of World War II. The book follows Sousley as he goes through childhood, high school, Marine Corp boot camp and to his eventual death on Iwo Jima.

The author grew up in a small Kentucky community not unlike Sousley's. With his first-hand knowledge of rural Kentucky life, Elliott crafts a realistic account of Sousley's life and surroundings. You'll laugh at Sousley's mischievous antics as a young man, you'll feel you're right there with him in boot camp and on Iwo Jima, and you'll likely shed tears as you read his mother's reaction to the news of her son's death. The book is both heart warming and heart wrenching. Be prepared to read it in one sitting; you won't want to put it down!

One young mans life changed forever.

This is about the story of Franklin Sousley, one of the men that is pictured in the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. His life story at such a young age, from a really small town in KY. Actually he was my third cousin if cousins go back that far. I just remember my dad telling me about who he was and when this book came out I couldn't wait to read about him. He is buried in Elizaville Cemetery, where my grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and cousin are buried.
If you enjoy history I believe you would enjoy reading about this country boy who fought for America.

From Hilltop to Mountaintop: The Life and Legacy of One Iwo Jima Flag Raiser may be the best book I have read this year. I sat down and read it from cover to cover in about 3 hours. Ron Elliot makes Franklin R. Sousley come alive in his account of Sousley's early life and the 31 days Sousley spent on Iwo Jima. I will never look at the picture of the Iwo Jima flag raising again without thinking of Sousely and all the heroic efforts of the soldiers who fight for our country in a war.

This book is second of a 5-part series, and covers two of the nine major forms of Tae Kwon Do: Tan Gun and To San. It not only provides an overview of the entire form, but breaks down each form into each individual move, complete with a written description, 5 views of the move, and a photo showing the application of the move against an assailant. (The photos are dated, but since retro fashion is in, it looks kind of hip.) It also shows combination attacks and self-defense techniques. The pictorial glossary (English and Korean) is very handy, as well. Jhoon Rhee himself is the demonstrator in the photos.

American TKD Giant's hyung series

These are the second two forms that one learns in traditional TKD. I bought the book when I was still on Chon-Ji and it helped prepare me for wht I needed to know. This is a great series of book for students of traditional TKD.

A good basic forms manual for those studying Jhoon Rhee's Tae Kwon Do Hyung.

Even though my expertise is mostly in the Japanese martial art (judo, jujitsu, karate-do, kendo, Kenjutsu, Tanto-jutsu etc.) systems I did study Tae Kwon Do for a short time. I did not think much of their hand techniques but I wanted to be familiar with their numerous unique kicking techniques. At that time I read everything I could find on this Korean system, including purchasing this volume (Tan-Gun and To-San of Tae Kwon Do Hyung)by the legendary Jhoon Rhee.

This book has the forms (Kata or Hyung)one needs to learn to move up in rank in Jhoon Rhee's Tae Kwon Do system. In this respect, this book is of value when combined with actual hands-on training with a Tae Kwon Do instructor. I found these early forms of Tae Kwon Do similar to the Japanese Karate-do forms, which I suspect is where most of these forms originated initially. From what I understand, many Tae Kwon Do systems created new forms and I do not know if this book is dated in that respect. Nevertheless, from a Tae Kwon Do historical stand point this book is of value.

In conclusion, this is a book for those studying Jhoon Rhee's Tai Kwon Do system.

About the Author
Frederick Harris is an artist who has lived in Japan for over fifty years. Raised in New York City, he attended a special high school for students talented in art and music before pursuing further art education at various colleges in the US. At the Art Students League he was introduced to the Japanese woodblock print by the well-known printmaker Martin Lewis. After serving in the armed forces in Korea, he moved to Japan to establish an art studio. He currently resides in Tokyo with his Japanese wife.

Beautiful Pictures

I got this book for its beautiful reproductions of Japanese prints, and was not disappointed. It does contain some explicit prints, if that is going to bother you, but they are a part of the history of this art form.

I like the organization and approach

I've several books on Ukiyo-e, but like this one due to its thematic development, and the broad range of topics, including the later ukiyo-e with foreigners! Even though I've read several books on ukiyo-e by different masters and on different topics, I found this much more informative, and now understand several repeated characters, themes, and symbols much better than I did before.

I own many books on Japanese Wood Block Prints but this is one of the best. It not only has great color prints but with each of them the author's analysis of that print which often includes a broader historical perspective. He does it in a format that is not overwhelming and manageable for those of us that are not scholars but just have a passion for the prints.
