Beautiful angst filled story (Spoilers below)
By Halo424
There were times in this book I cried, times I laughed, and times I felt the pain of the h. Such power in a novel with less than 200 pages. I am in awe of Caitlin Crews and her ability to pen such a thing. The H was cruel and hateful and yet I felt his pain. But his actions at times were unconscionable and very hard to read. You felt his hatred for the h and the lie he believed in for six long years. It consumed him. The worst part was he created that pain all by himself. He cut pretty much everyone out of his world and buried himself in work. When his Grandfather set him out on his quest he was actually making him face his fears. And that came in the face of his estranged wife. And his secret son. People hate that and in her defense she tried to contact him, wrote him letters, tested, etc but he blocked her. She could have done more maybe but rejection is painful and she lost hope. Now six years later he is back and his revenge is brutal. I hated him. But I am not going to rehash the book but honestly you must read it. It is a great journey and the HEA is delicious. Due in most part to the strongest h I have ever read about! She was amazing and she fought back courageously. I love this series but this to me was the best book so far. It will be a keeper.

WOW! You okay Ms. Crews?
By HoneyBLibrarian
Heartbreaking.
One of the most difficult original tearjerking HP I have read in quite some time. Not sure what Ms. Crews was "going through" but clearly something impacted or someone deeply for she dug into an abyss to ring this entangeled heartwrenching tale of what easily could have been resolved. It is difficult to understand why someone would throw away a marriage withought even a discussion but actually pride feelings of abandonment and rejection manifest in ugly ways.
Im in shock. Very sad book. Wow.
Whatever Ms. Crews is going through hope things get better.
I have reread this book twice. Loved the narration of how the mother decribed the father. This just felt like it was a homage to someone to bring their azz home.

P.S. I am pleasantly shocked. An Asian heroine. Goodness 100 years and HP finally realizes all readers are not white blonde blue eyed housewives. Im surprised this one made it past editing. Love the cover. Ms. Crews: Salute.

Murder in the Bayou: Who Killed the Women Known as the Jeff Davis 8?, by Ethan Brown

An explosive, true-life southern gothic story, Murder in the Bayou chronicles the twists and turns of a high-stakes investigation into the murders of eight women in a troubled Louisiana parish.

Between 2005 and 2009, the bodies of eight women were discovered around the murky canals and crawfish ponds of Jennings, Louisiana, a bayou town of 10,000 in the heart of the Jefferson Davis parish. Local law enforcement officials were quick to pursue a serial killer theory, opening a floodgate of media coverage, from CNN to the New York Times. Collectively the victims became known as the "Jeff Davis 8," and their lives, their deaths, and the ongoing investigation reveals a small southern community's most closely guarded secrets.

As Ethan Brown suggests, these homicides were not the work of a single serial killer, but the violent fallout of Jennings' brutal sex and drug trade, a backwoods underworld hidden in plain sight. Mixing muckraking research and immersive journalism over the course of a five-year investigation, Ethan Brown reviewed thousands of pages of previously unseen homicide files to determine what happened during each victim's final hours.

Epic in scope and intensely suspenseful, Murder in the Bayou is the story of an American town buckling under the dark forces of poverty, race, and class division - and a lightning rod for justice for the daughters it lost.

giving the facts that the author has discovered in an entertaining and easy to read manner
By Tvengineer
Violence, corruption, incompetence, intimidation, cronyism, lies, cover ups and back door politics are just some of what this book uncovers in a little southwest Louisiana town. While it shines a magnifying lens on Jennings, La. be sure that this type of thing goes on in towns small and large all over the country. The book is well researched and well presented, giving the facts that the author has discovered in an entertaining and easy to read manner.

Love it!
By Courtney reeves
I could give this book a 10 out of 10! Loved it.. makes you think twice about trusting people in Jennings.. I'm too scared to walk down the road anymore, but shines light on these poor innocent women who deserve justice! Great work Ethan!

The sad fact is that this is not a movie
By Kindle Customer
This book has opened my eyes. I have been naive up to this point, corruption and abuse of power are still alive and thriving in 2015. As I read this book I couldn't help but think, how is this happening in this day and age? And to realize that the people who were linked to these eight, defenseless, troubled victims still hold power in law enforcement as well as political leaders is appalling. Ethan has done an outstanding job investigating and his book delivers powerful, appalling, shocking twist and turns that Hollywood would envy. The sad fact is that this is not a movie, this really happened, and the people responsible are still out there free and in charge. The case has once again gotten the attention that it desperately needs in order to finally find the murder, (murders). I am watching carefully as I am sure many are now to see what happens next.

This is a book for dedicated academics who consider spending years masochistically overworked and underappreciated as a laudable goal. They lead the lives of the impoverished, grade the exams of whiny undergrads, and spend lonely nights in the library or laboratory pursuing a transcendent truth that only six or seven people will ever care about. These suffering, unshaven sad sacks are grad students, and their salvation has arrived in this witty look at the low points of grad school.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • advice on maintaining a veneer of productivity in front of your advisor
  • tips for sleeping upright during boring seminars
  • a description of how to find which departmental events have the best unguarded free food
  • how you can convincingly fudge data and feign progress

This hilarious guide to surviving and thriving as the lowliest of life-forms—the grad student—will elaborate on all of these issues and more.

Review
"A hilarious, and exquisitely thorough, rebuttal for every time your parents bring up 'The G-Word.'" --Rob Kutner, writer, “The Daily Show,” “The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien,” author, Apocalypse How"

“The academic world is so full of humorless wonks and pedants, that Ruben arrives like a crazed party-crasher. It's as if a tweedy committee coma has been interrupted by someone from the roller derby. This very funny book also slings many sly arrows into an overstuffed and moribund culture that needs repair and reconfiguration.” -- Compound Calico, Moderator, RateYourStudents.blogspot.com

"Adam Ruben's book is funnier than even the funniest dissertation, thesis, lab report, or legal brief.  I wish my law school casebooks had been 10% as enjoyable to read." - Jeremy Blachman, author of Anonymous Lawyer

“Indispensable for any prospective grad student who wants to get a jump on his or her anxiety requirements. This book proves that years of obscure, excruciating academic toil can, in fact, make a meaningful contribution to society as a source of comedy.” -- Jay Katsir, writer for “The Colbert Report”

“Why waste a few years in grad school when you can waste a few bucks on this hilarious and insightful book instead?  You'll end up with the same career prospects (zero), but have had a lot more fun."  -- Jeff Kreisler, author of Get Rich Cheating

"Hilarious!  Adam Ruben has nailed the graduate student experience, and has done it with a great sense of humor....this is a true survival guide for anyone foolish, er, ambitious enough to embark on an advanced degree."-- Dexter Holland, Grad School Sufferer and Sympathizer (Lead Singer, The Offspring)

About the Author
ADAM RUBEN spent seven years at Johns Hopkins University earning his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. While there, he parlayed his healthy disdain for academia into a stand-up comedy act, which he has performed at clubs, colleges, and private functions from Boston to San Diego, recently opening for Dane Cook's Tourgasm at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. and earning second place in the Funniest Jewish Comic Contest at the Laugh Factory in Times Square.  For five years, Adam has taught an undergraduate stand-up comedy class that has quickly become one of the most popular January "Intersession" courses at Johns Hopkins University and culminates in a final show open to all students. He's written humor pieces for The National Lampoon and appears weekly on Food Detectives with Ted Allen.

Foreword

There exists a subculture of dedicated academics who view spending a decade masochistically overworked and underappreciated as a laudable goal. They lead the lives of the impoverished, grade the exams of the whiny, and spend lonely nights in the library or laboratory pursuing a glowing truth that only six or seven people will ever care about. These people are grad students, and they are idiots.

This book is for readers considering or already committed to spending the best years of their lives without sunlight. You’ll learn which departmental events have the best free food, what pranks to play on hot-but-vapid undergrads, how to convincingly fudge data, and why your friends who opted to take faceless nine-to-five jobs after college were actually the smart ones.

Preface

Seriously?  A foreword and a preface?

Indeed.  The existence of both sections can teach you a lot about grad school:

1.      Much can be gained by stretching a small amount of content over multiple pages.
2.      In general, such redundancy imparts powerful messages that are powerful.
3.      Your reaction reveals whether you should be a grad student:
a.       Those unfit for grad school have skipped ahead, probably to a page with an illustration.
b.      Those who belong in grad school feel a compulsion to read every word (and, in some cases, take notes to prepare an extensive critique on the book’s use of dialectic assonance).

Prologue

All right, now this is just insane.  A prologue?  Really?  Are we stuck here in limbo, doomed never to begin the book?

Exactly.  Now you’re getting it.  This book is like your life, and the prologue is grad school.  You eagerly want to begin your life, but grad school stands in the way, and just when you think it’s over—nope!  Another section.

And the hell of it is, you could begin your life this moment.  Really.  You could skip to Chapter 1 and begin reading the actual book.  But out of obligation to the printed word, or out of inertia, or out of a misguided need to finish what you start, you’ll keep reading and waiting.

A foreword, a preface, and a prologue.  Ridiculous.  I mean, seriously, what’s next—an introduction?

Introduction

Every speech at my college graduation buzzed with a sense of finality.  “You have completed your education,” each one reminded us.  “Now go contribute to society!”

And most of my classmates eagerly accepted the challenge, having known that this day—the official, robe-clad end of the beginning—would someday arrive.  As they pocketed their diplomas, they envisioned their new jobs, their new responsibilities, their lives outside the academy.  They entered college as children, but they exited on that hot June afternoon as citizens of the world.

Most of them.  Not me.

And not all of my classmates, either.  As guest speakers and valedictorians exhorted us to go forth into the real world, a few of us felt the directive a bit premature.  We knew that college had ended, but we also knew that the “real” world was years away.  We were prepared instead to enter a half-assed compromise between college and real life, a simultaneously intense and lackadaisical academic perdition called “grad school.”

I felt a little like a cheater, like a twelve-year old who still wades in the kiddie pool, knowing it’s well past time to start swimming, but frightened of the loud teenagers in the big pool.  Or maybe like a budding musician who masters Guitar Hero, but never picks up an actual guitar.

Instead of a job and a boss and a mortgage, September would bring another college campus with its dorms and quads and classrooms—and we wouldn’t even feel like its most welcome occupants.

We would walk around our new planned communities in a daze, not quite fitting in with the social culture, and not really supposed to.  We would experience all the disorientation of a new campus—just like we did four years ago—but none of the excitement.  And we’d have no idea whether to go to football games.

***

I spent the first two months of grad school determining whether three amino acid residues (out of hundreds) were important for the functioning of a certain protein (out of thousands) that helps certain bacteria eat a sugar called arabinose.

I demonstrated that those three residues are not important.

Two months.

But that’s grad school.  You take a tiny corner of the universe that a professor finds fascinating and bury your face in it, only looking up occasionally to steal unattended bagels.

At the end of two months, I felt ready to announce my discovery to the world.  “Residues 103, 107, and 109 are unimportant!” I wanted to cry from the hilltops.  “Unimportant!”  But a journal article never quite coalesced, and I moved on to a different lab, and now exactly zero people know about my discovery—which, had I ended up publishing the results, would have been exactly the number of people who cared.

What was this?  My entire life, I felt I was gearing up to do something.  Now I had finished my college education, and as a reward, I got to sit in an ignored corner of an academic building, growing and harvesting plate after plate of meaningless bacteria, solely for the sake of turning grant money into fodder for more grant money.

To a member of the generation that was reminded, “You’re special!” at every turn, nothing strikes a blow like realizing you’ve reached adulthood positioned to be completely, maybe permanently, irrelevant.

***

Hence this book.  No matter where you are in the grad school process, you’ve probably felt this way (or will soon).

Sure, you love what you study—but to the exclusion of nearly all else?  When you’re typing page three of a 25-page paper at 4:00 AM, sucking down your ninth Red Bull of the night, will you honestly feel there’s nothing you’d rather do?  Or will you shut your laptop in anger, thrust your head into your hands, and lament your stupid, stupid decision to go to grad school?

***

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from writing a book about grad school, it’s that writing a book about college must be easy.  Most college students are young, overconfident, drink beer, go to classes, take exams, write papers, party, live in dorms, deal with professors, parents, and roommates—in other words, their experiences are relatively universal.

Grad schools are all different.  You could earn a Master’s, a Ph.D., a J.D., an M.B.A., a D.V.M., (that’s a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine), or one of hundreds of other degrees.  Your daily routine could include hours of classroom instruction (either giving or receiving it), or you may never need to attend class.  You might obligatorily spend twelve hours a day in a lab, or you might have to research your dissertation at your own pace in a location of your choosing.  Hell, you may not even write a dissertation.  You also might not have oral exams, teaching responsibilities, or an actual advisor.  Your program may stop after a flat-out guaranteed two years, or you could find yourself puttering around campus a decade from now, swearing up and down that you’re going to graduate any minute.  You might be twenty-two years old and eager to spend the rest of your life studying particle physics, or you might be fifty, have a job and a family, and you’ve decided to earn an M.B.A. at night online for a little salary bump.

So here’s what I don’t want.  I don’t want to find my book on Amazon.com with little user reviews that say things like this:

What the hell is a “thesis”?, April 13, 2010

Not everything in this book applied to me!  Waah!  Waah!

If you read a sentence in this book about the GRE, for example, and you’re getting your advanced degree from a pharmacy college, which means you’ve taken the PCAT instead—let it go.  As grad school teaches in spades, it’s not all about you.  In fact, almost nothing is.

So relax, enjoy, and please fight the urge to take notes.  Maybe you’ll even learn something, which is allegedly the point of grad school.

Then get back to work.

Chapter 1

Stop? Drop? Enroll?

DECIDING WHETHER TO RUIN YOUR LIFE

WHEN facing a major decision—say, whether to buy a car—take a piece of paper and make two columns. Label one "Pros" and the other "Cons." In these columns, write the positive and negative factors that will influence your decision. (For example, "On the one hand, I'd have an easier commute, but on the other hand, I'd have to pay for parking.") Then see which list is longer—and your decision is made.

When deciding whether to go to grad school, the process is similar. Take a piece of paper and make two columns. Label one "Cons" and the other "Super Cons." In these columns, write the negative and really negative factors that influence your decision. (For example, "On the one hand, I'd feel overworked, but on the other hand, I'd also be depressed.") Then see which list is longer—and do whatever the hell you want anyway.

After all, the decision to attend grad school is made with the heart, not with the head. And your heart is a moron. Your heart says, "I love to learn!" while your head says, "Hey, wait a minute. I'm the one who has to do the learning!"

But you can't fight an organ that could kill you at any moment, so listen to your heart. If it says, "Go to grad school," you know what to do. (See a doctor. It's supposed to say, "Ka—thump, ka—thump." Seriously. If your heart speaks words, you're fucked.)

Two Schools of Thought

Some people think grad school will be just like another few years of college: "College was fun, so grad school will be even funner, because I'll be able to buy alcohol legally!" These are typically the same people who don't see anything wrong with the word funner.

In reality, graduate school can be considered an extension of college in the same way that death can be considered an extension of life.

Some of the primary differences between college and grad school:

Quiz: Is Grad School Right for Me?

Or Do I Prefer Joy?

Stop! Before you decide to matriculate, which is a hilarious word, consider that grad school is not for everyone. For example, supermodels can count themselves out right away, as can regular models, athletes, aesthetes, optimists, social butterflies, the "in" crowd, the outward bound, the upwardly mobile, international singing sensations, aristocracy, the generally well—adjusted, and anyone else already enjoying life.

To determine whether grad school is right for you, take this simple quiz. (Hint: If you're reading this book for pleasure but thinking, "Hooray! I get to take a quiz!," you're halfway there.)

Here's a criterion to start you off. This quiz is like the ones you see in Glamour or Cosmo. If when you see those titles, you picture them in your mind like this_._._.

Glamour: (J Glam 6(23): 13826-8)

Cosmo: (Cos Rev Lett B 167(1): 220-9)

. . . you're ready to enroll.

1. I want my_significant other to

a. love_me forever!

b. stick with me through good times and bad!

c. abandon_me after two or three frustrating years of incompatible schedules.

2. To me, money is

a. very important.

b. somewhat important.

c. wholly unnecessary and loathsome. Fie upon thee, o vile money!

3. If I were an animal, I would be

a. a tiger.

b. a bear.

c. a tiger or a bear who is in grad school.

4. At least half_my conversations include the phrase

a. "It was the best time I've had in my entire life."

b. "It was the drunkest I've ever been, ever."

c. "It was one of the more_thoughtful pieces I've heard on NPR this week."

5. The most beautiful thing in the world is

a. a rainbow.

b. true love.

c. the Euler equation.

6. When I was little, I always wanted to be

a. an astronaut.

b. the President.

c. someone who designs a small valve on an astronaut's shoe or publishes esoteric analyses of presidential policy.

7. I see a tray of free pastries. I think,

a. "These look pretty good. I may eat one."

b. "I'm not very hungry. Oh well."

c. "Well, that takes care of this week's breakfasts, lunches, and

dinners."

8. I'd love to earn fame and notoriety

a. right now!

b. during a long and successful career.

c. for someone else.

9.

Train A leaves New York at 9:03 a.m. traveling at 80 miles per hour, and Train B leaves Washington, D.C., at 10:18 a.m. traveling at 70 miles per hour. If both trains maintain a constant speed,

a. Train A will have traveled 100 miles by the time Train B departs.

b. the two trains will pass each other near Wilmington, Delaware.

c. I can still only afford the Chinatown bus.

10. I hope

a. someday to achieve greatness.

b. for a secure, stable future.

c. rarely.

If you answered "a" or "b" to most questions, relax! Enjoy yourself! You have a rich and rewarding life ahead of you, no part of which should be spent in academia. Go directly to the frat house.

If you answered "c" to most questions, fuck. You're perfect for grad school. Say goodbye to your social life, your finances, and any friends who don't study the same subject.

Blockin' Out the Scenery, Breakin' My Mind

Still not sure if you should go to grad school? Look for the top ten signs that you belong in an institution (pause) of higher learning:

10. You have friends who got high—paying jobs doing something easy right out of college_._._._and for some reason, you don't envy them.

9. You could talk for hours about the awesome features in the new versions of EndNote or RefWorks.

8. No one depends on you financially.

7. In college, your favorite classes were the most fascinating ones, not the easiest ones. And you did all the "optional" reading—and loved it.

6. You find yourself describing academic texts using the same terms other people use to describe extreme sports. ("That gnarly textbook chapter by Hoffman et al. is such an adrenaline rush that it rocks the fucking universe!")

5. You think the job market will improve in a generation or so, right when you'll be ready to join it.

4. You feel a deep love for a particular citation style and genuine contempt for all other citation styles.

3. It's been too long since you had a good bout of nervous diarrhea.

2. To you, "semiformal" attire means wearing a T—shirt that wasn't free.

And the number one sign you should go to grad school:

1. Despite all you've just learned, you still freaking want to. That's the only sign you'll heed, anyway.

Making Cents

Before committing to your program, ask yourself two basic questions: Can you afford to go to grad school? And if you can't, will that stop you?

Write the annual amounts you're likely to receive from the following sources on the blank lines. Add them. If the final total is less than the cost of your graduate program, but you still want to enroll, consider sleeping with a lonely financial aid officer.

Departmental Aid

In some programs, your department may actually give

you an annual stipend or fellowship. To calculate the

amount they're likely to offer, look up the average cost of living in your area and divide by a thousand while cackling

maniacally. __________

Research Assistantship

If you take an RA position, you'll perform cutting—edge studies using state—of—the—art equipment and get your name in prestigious publications, giving you a leg up for the rest of your career. Just kidding. You'll wash glassware. ___________

Teaching Assistantship

When you're in college, the TAs seem like aliens—a species of students slightly too old to be your friends, who probably live in the academic building where they proctor your exams. This is only mostly true. Also, the moment you become a TA yourself, you'll realize exactly why you, as an undergrad, were so annoying. __________

Outside Fellowship

If you're ever worried that history will forget the details of your life, holy crap, get a fellowship named after you. These have names like "The Mortimer H. L. Nussenzweig, PhD Class of 1951 Doctoral Fellowship for the Playing of the Zither," and are as difficult to land as they are to fit into one line on your rÇsumÇ. __________

On—Campus Job

Yeah. Awesome idea. You don't spend enough time on campus as it is. Now you have to spend twenty hours a week working in the library's Special Collections Room or fielding calls from confused tenured professors at the Computer Help Desk. "Well," you think, "at least it pays better than waiting tables." But it doesn't. __________

Off—Campus Job

Something probably makes you feel good about being the smartest waitress at Applebee's—briefly, anyway. You can spend all day thinking about the master of fine arts degree you're getting at night while you serve high—school kids who order the cheapest items on the menu. You pity your co—workers who'll still be bussing tables three years from now, but then you realize you'll still be bussing tables three years from now as well—and you'll have a giant debt. __________

Your Parents

During college, your parents were so proud of everything their brilliant little scholar accomplished. But ask them to support you financially during grad school, and watch how fast they backpedal on their commitment to education: "Well_._._._that seventeen—year PhD program sure looks nice, but don't you want to_._._._I don't know, get a job now?" __________

Student Loan

Thirty years from now, when you look at your hard—earned diploma, you'll reminisce about the good times you spent studying the subject you love. Then you'll sigh, dig out your checkbook, and make another monthly payment. __________

Sallie Mae

This is the name of your great-aunt on your mother's side. She is wealthy. Kill her and take the money. __________

Um_._._._You Know_._._._

Someplace

Most students plan to fund their graduate education by acquiring a large sum of money from um_._._._you know_._._._someplace. Don't listen to the dissidents who tell you this plan won't work. It must, because you've already made several decisions that require it to have worked. __________

It's funny because it's sad and true
By Hugo J.
Man, this book cut to the bone. I'm currently finishing my own PhD, and every page has got at least one cringe-worthy laugh that provides some comfort that is the slog of doing graduate school in science. Don't know how well it carries over to other fields, but man, some of those "Grad School Pro Tips" are the real deal. I've been told that you should read this before considering grad school, and that's for sure. It's funny because it's sad and true, not because it's hyperbole. And if you haven't read it, read it towards the end, because as above, it cuts to the bone.

It's like how when I had an office job, I thought The Office (TV show) was horrifying, and then when I quit, I thought it was absolutely hilarious.

Very Funny lighthearted read!! Good for all Grad students.
By D. Snider
I have just finished up my first semester in the Sociology grad program at Western Kentucky University. I wanted a book to read that would guide me through the rest of my journey through the program, and would also be funny as well. I knew Adam Rubin's name from the food detectives show and saw that this was a funny book that might help me destress and decompress after my first semester.

I was right! This book is a very lighthearted take on all elements og grad school: Choosing a program, being a GA, choosing your committee, going to conferences, etc. I found many things relatable. I plan to read this book at the end of every semester until I get my Master's, and hopefully I will pick up more tips and laughs along the way.

...your Stupid, Stupid Decision to read this book
By P. Collins
Don’t be distracted by the 5-star ratings calling this book hilarious. Instead, look at the $0.05 price for used copies and decide if you can afford the time it takes to page through the whole thing. I wish I hadn’t because the humor here is relentlessly negative and depressing – it’s funny like sticking your head in the oven. If you hated graduate school, this book will give you a couple of hours to commiserate about it. Current students, their parents, friends, and partners should steer clear.

From Publishers Weekly
This is a peach of a book, as delectable as the Sun Crest peach Masumoto is struggling to save. It is a superior variety as to taste but has a short shelf life. The author, a third-generation farmer, gives an eloquent account of one year on his farm in the California desert. He notes that grape and tree fruit farmers are deprived of an annual rite that other farmers have?planting a new crop. Peach trees are planted every 15 to 20 years; grapevines, once in a lifetime. And, according to the author, a new planting is like having another child, requiring patience and sacrifice and a resounding optimism for the future. Masumoto's book reveals his commitment to the land and his family; it is also a cogent commentary on American agriculture.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
This book is a delightful narrative on the life of a Japanese American peach and grape farmer in the San Joaquin Valley near Del Rey, California. With poetic flair and a sense of humor, Masumoto offers his perspectives on the joys and frustrations of raising and tending peaches and grapes. He describes his relationship with the weeds and insects that invade his fields, the unpredictability of the weather, his desire to treat workers fairly, and the realities of the market structure. Reading about Masumoto's attempts to produce high-quality peaches and his fears that rain at the wrong time will destroy his drying grapes will be a truly educational experience for those not familiar with the complexities of farming. Masumoto observes with awe the diversity of nature over four seasons and his family's obligation to plan their lives around the seasons. Many books about family farms today present an image of economic and social distress, but this work portrays the positive aspects as told by a farmer who enjoys his work. Recommended for public libraries.?Irwin Weintraub, Rutgers Univ. Libs., Piscataway, N.J.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Masumoto is a third-generation fruit grower in Del Ray, California. In his simple memoir, the college-educated farmer discusses the continual challenge of growing fruit in an area where annual rainfall is marked in single digits (irrigation is the answer) and weeds threaten to overtake the crop. In chronologically arranged chapters that extend from spring planting to summer harvesting to winter waiting, Masumoto reflects on a variety of topics, including the fact that his succulent, organically grown peaches, which have a shelf life of only one week, aren't in demand; and his recollection of losing 35,000 trays of drying raisins to intense rainfall reveals why he always "feels persecuted by the power of nature." A lyrically written memoir by an introspective orchardist. Sue-Ellen Beauregard

Much good information. It was chilling
By Tester-review
Fascinating story of one Japanese family's hard work raising peaches for a living. Much good information. It was chilling, however, to learn about the Japanese being sent from their own property during WWII because our country feared they would rise up against us.

Hurray for Masumoto and his Family and his Orchard.

I want to eat those Sun Crest peaches.....and I will try to find them. In this complex, and many times destructive, world it is good to know there is a Masumoto on the creative side of the scale. .

Best book about farming I've ever read
By Erin R. Clerico
"Epitaph" is a gem and a masterpiece. Masumoto is a good farmer, a truly dedicated family man and a gifted writer. The story is in part about his love affair with a wonderful variety of peach.
City people will know why supermarket peaches disappoint and country people will recognize the sad story of a farmer who, the harder he tries the more frustration he finds. The peaches you find in the supermarket are there because the consumer/supermarket/broker/ value "shelf life" more than flavor.
Peaches don't travel well and they don't last long. The farmer must choose the right variety, prune it exactly the right way at exactly the right time, fertilize and water at the right time, pray fervently for the right weather conditions.
Only then, if the peach absorbs enough sun to fully mature, will it have the full bursting ambrosial flavor a peach should have. Only the sun can make a peach sweet and flavorful. Most really delicious peaches won't last more than three or four days after they are picked.
A good peach should be eaten as it is right out of hand. Not put in a pie or jam or cake. Only a good farmer can grow a perfect peach and no supermarket want them. Where is the answer?
You'll fall in love with farming and weep a bit as you read the Masumoto family story. Perhaps you won't fully appreciate what today's farmers are up against, but this book will give you more insight than you ever had before.
If you are from a farming family you will fully appreciate every word of this beautiful story of a San Joaquin Valley farm.

Revelation Space, by Alastair Reynolds

This highly-acclaimed first novel is destined to establish Alastair Reynolds as one of science fiction's most intelligent and revolutionary new voices. Revelation Space is a sprawling operatic novel that ranges across vast gulfs of time and space to arrive at a terrifying conclusion.

When human colonists settled the Amarantin homeworld, few of them bothered to question the disappearance of its native population almost a million years before. But one man, Dan Silvester, is convinced that solving the riddle of the Amarantin is vital to human survival. As he nears the truth he learns that someone wants him dead. Because the Amarantin were destroyed for a reason-and if that reason is made public, the universe-and reality itself-could be forever altered.

Amazon.com Review
Alastair Reynolds's first novel is "hard" SF on an epic scale, crammed with technological marvels and immensities. Its events take place over a relatively short period, but have roots a billion years old--when the Dawn War ravaged our galaxy.

Sylveste is the only man ever to return alive and sane from a Shroud, an enclave in space protected by awesome gravity-warping defenses: "a folding a billion times less severe should have required more energy than was stored in the entire rest-mass of the galaxy." Now an intuition he doesn't understand makes him explore the dead world Resurgam, whose birdlike natives long ago tripped some booby trap that made their own sun erupt in a deadly flare.

Meanwhile, the vast, decaying lightship Nostalgia for Infinity is coming for Sylveste, whose dead father (in AI simulation) could perhaps help the Captain, frozen near absolute zero yet still suffering monstrous transformation by nanotech plague. Most of Infinity's tiny crew have hidden agendas--Khouri the reluctant contract assassin believes she must kill Sylveste to save humanity--and there are two bodiless stowaways, one no longer human and one never human. Shocking truths emerge from bluff, betrayal, and ingenious lies.

The trail leads to a neutron star where an orbiting alien construct has defenses to challenge the Infinity's planet-wrecking superweapons.

At the heart of this artifact, the final revelations detonate--most satisfyingly. Dense with information and incident, this longish novel has no surplus fat and seems almost too short. A sparkling SF debut. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly
This distant-past/far-future, hard sci-fi tour de force probes a galaxy-wide enigma: why does spacefaring humanity encounter so few remnants of intelligent life? Excavating the 900,000-year-old Amarantin civilization on its home world, Resurgam, archaeologist Dan Sylveste discovers evidence of a splinter cult that abandoned Resurgam for the stars but returned, only to be swallowed up by a mysterious cataclysm that destroyed all the Amarantins. Aboard the Nostalgia for Infinity, a vast light-hugger ship in interstellar space, the ominous Triumvirate of cyborg starfarers seeks Sylveste to heal its captain, afflicted by the deadly Melding Plague, which turns once-humans into their own semisentient spaceships. In Chasm City on the slum-ridden world of Yellowstone, assassin Ana Khouri joins the Nostalgia's crew intent on killing Sylveste. Clearly intoxicated by cutting-edge scientific research in bioengineering, space physics, cybernetics Reynolds spins a ravishingly inventive tale of intrigue. Hard SF addicts will applaud the author's talent for creating convincing alien beings and the often uneasy merging of human and machine intelligence, depicted here as nearly too frighteningly real for comfort. Others, however, may find these human-cybernetic hybrid characters chilling, dispassionate (except for their built-in drives toward revenge and murder) and foreboding. Reynolds's vision of a future dominated by artificial intelligence trembles with the ultimate cold of the dark between the stars.

Far from his best work
By D. R. Martz
Compared to his more recent Revenger, this is a dud. Definitely a dire need for a good editor in the later third of the book. Lots of weird terminology, irrelevant scientific digressions, and uncharacteristic behavior by the characters. For example a character that just had an inner dialog about detesting someone turns around and volunteers to help him to the infirmary (contrived so he'd be out of the room when something else happened). How about 'not unguilty' as a strange double negative? Perhaps 'not innocent' would have been better? Or maybe just guilty? And of course planets are never encircled or surrounded, they are 'englobed.' Yup. Also sense defying alliterations just to get the sound of them. And, finally there were obviously sections removed by some editor, because a couple of scenes highlight information that is NOT present in the book.

Not quite House of Suns but still a great read
By Kindle Customer
The setting is a bit like the dystopia from which springs an advanced post-human civilization. It's fantastical but still gritty and, as is the case with House of Suns, mostly restricted by the rule of physics. There are themes of transhumanism and truly alien entities, but no one is traveling faster than the speed of light and the Reynolds gives grounded explanations of the more important technologies. The plot is grander than it appears at first glance and spans long stretches of time (though not the mind-boggling spans found in House of Suns), and the characters are compelling if, ultimately, not completely fleshed out.

If you like Reynolds, you'll like Revelation Space.

Ocassionally flawed, but very much enjoyable
By Veronica Sicoe
While I found the first quarter of this novel quite hard to get into, after the initial confusion as to the purpose of what I was reading and the slight headache of adapting to mr. Reynold's style, I began to be so engrossed into the story, that I was hardly able to put the book down.

The slight annoyance that the first truly inciting incident, in my opinion, that pertains to the actual main plot, happened over 100 pages in, was quickly forgotten as one intriguing thing after another kept propelling me deeper and deeper into the story.

Without rehashing the plot or the main ideas that fed this fascinating space opera, let me just say that the many tiny threads of this tapestry come together beautifully, making perfect sense, no single loose end left dangling, no curiosity unsatisfied, and no thirst unquenched.

The resolution is highly gratifying, and measures up to the mounting tension. And if you enjoy a bit of hard science-fiction, Reynold's love of explaining things in detail, without ever getting info-dumpy, will fully satisfy as well. The intriguing main character, Dan Sylveste, and the equally interesting cast converging on him, are suitable vessels to explore the vastness of Reynold's imagination. And the grand setting he created for them to act against is truly unforgettable.

All in all, a very recommendable novel, especially for pretentious readers. Not so well suited for impatient readers looking for immediate, effortless satisfaction.

Losing Control: How and Why People Fail at Self-Regulation, by Roy F. Baumeister, Todd F. Heatherton, Dianne M. Tice

Self-regulation refers to the self's ability to control its own thoughts, emotions, and actions. Through self-regulation, we consciously control how much we eat, whether we give in to impulse, task performance, obsessive thoughts, and even the extent to which we allow ourselves recognition of our emotions. This work provides a synthesis and overview of recent and long-standing research findings of what is known of the successes and failures of self-regulation.
People the world over suffer from the inability to control their finances, their weight, their emotions, their craving for drugs, their sexual impulses, and more. The United States in particular is regarded by some observers as a society addicted to addiction. Therapy and support groups have proliferated not only for alcoholics and drug abusers but for all kinds of impulse control, from gambling to eating chocolate. Common to all of these disorders is a failure of self-regulation, otherwise known as "self-control."
The consequences of these self-control problems go beyond individuals to affect family members and society at large. In Losing Control, the authors provide a single reference source with comprehensive information on general patterns of self-regulation failure across contexts, research findings on specific self-control disorders, and commentary on the clinical and social aspects of self-regulation failure. Self-control is discussed in relation to what the "self" is, and the cognitive, motivational, and emotional factors that impinge on one's ability to control one's "self."

Key Features
* Discusses the importance of the concept of self-regulation to general issues of autonomy and identity
* Encompasses self-control of thoughts, feelings, and actions
* Contains a special section on the control of impulses and appetites

More meaty than any "self-help" book, more helpful too!
By A Customer
I'm a reasonably successful professional, wife, and mother who has never had any problems with most of the things discussed in depth in this book (drug addiction, alcoholism, smoking, weight problems, obsessions, gambling, etc).
The reason I bought the book was for the discussions of self-management. They've been very thought provoking for me. I have trouble with setting goals and achieving them, prioritizing, and "self-handicapping", especially procrastination. Now I can think more clearly about how I get in my own way, and I can develop better, more effective strategies for coping.
The "implications for parenting" in the final chapter are also amazingly useful. Though pretty straightforward, they elegantly tie together so many common sense ideas about what good parenting is all about. Having standards. Monitoring. Enabling the child to develop self-control. Instilling the capacity to delay gratification. Challenging the child's ability to control his or her attention may not be as "common sense" as the others, but in context, I can see it's importance.
Many thanks to the authors for a thought-provoking and well-written analysis.

Book Contains Many Insights On Addictive Behaviors
By Book Lover
As the mother of a child suffering from an eating disorder and with a spouse suffering from alcohol self-regulation issues, I found this book to contain a vast wealth of helpful information. Even though it was written in 1994, I found 15 years later that the book provides excellent material that I had not really seen published elsewhere on these topics. I keep going back to it time and time again in my search for answers to help my family members.

On page 9 of the book, it mentions three items that are important ingredients for self-regulation including: 1) standards (for example, the thermostat cannot operate without being set on a particular target temperature); 2) monitoring the current circumstances (people can only regulate themselves successfully if they pay attention to what they are doing); and 3) people must have some means of operating on themselves in order to bring about the desired changes or responses.

I wanted to write this review in the hope that this book can perhaps help others. Chapters address: Self-management: Taking care of yourself; Thoughts out of control; Failure to control emotions and moods; Controlling impulses and appetites such as alcohol, smoking, eating too much; Gambling, Shopping, Aggression and a section also on the Implications for Parenting.

The central idea of this work as major contribution to our way of thinking about ourselves
By Shalom Freedman
This book reveals at the outset a central concept I for one have never really given serious thought to. It is the concept of self- control on how we 'override' all the time impulses, feelings, wishes, demands, habits. In other words it points to a picture of consciousness in which there is continual struggle and decision.
Of course the main focus of the book is in describing and dealing with situations in which control has been lost, in which the self- regulation mechanism has failed. The authors contend that American society is today seeing a vast acceleration in the growth of 'loss of control' disorders. The various drug addictions, the obsessive behaviors in gambling, sexuality, other areas of life mark out this loss of our own ability to manage ourselves. Even in the area of overriding our own thoughts there is breakdown and loss of control.
Reading and studying this work is then ideally a way of better knowing, and improving ourselves.
