Fine hiking guide but not updated for 10 years

We used an older edition and thought this was more updated. However, while it was the last edition, it was ten years old and, with all the changes in Sedona and improvements to the trails (along with new ones...) it was a bit dated. Other than that, it is still an excellent hiking guide. We were just disappointed that it wasn't more up to date.

Andrew J. DuBrin is Professor Emeritus of Management in the E. Philip Saunders College of Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he served as department chairman and team leader. Dr. DuBrin has taught courses and conducted research in leadership, management, organizational behavior, and career management. He presents at other colleges, career schools, and universities. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology from Michigan State University. Dr. DuBrin has experience in human resource management and is a business and personal consultant in career management, leadership, and management development. Dr. DuBrin is an established author of both textbooks and trade books, and he contributes to professional journals, magazines, newspapers, and online media. He has written textbooks on management, leadership, organizational behavior, human relations, political behavior in organizations, and impression management. This book is outrageously overpriced. The content is common-sense, with very little insight or theoretical or research basis. Many of the sections which claim to list "leadership" characteristics are incredibly sexist. For a graduate level seminar in Management, I found this text completely laughable.

Comprehensive recipes for data visualisation for beginners

This is not a book that can be read cover to cover. The book title doesn't mention it (and I don't understand why), but this is actually a recipe book.

The book is organized as a series of unrelated recipes, each one showing examples (source code with explanation) of how a particular visualisation can be acomplished using JavaScript and usually some ready-made visualisation library. I liked that the book does not focus on a single library, but instead the examples always use the best tool for the job. The list of visualisations is comprehensive, and covers everything from basic line charts to more complex map-based and dynamic visualisation. The book is obviously intended for beginners, but I liked how the author explains some of the more intricate parts of the presented codes. Besides examples showing how to visualise data using popular libraries, the book also covers some utility libraries, like underscore and backbone, that come handy when building visualisations; working with AJAX, and also shows how to build a more complex application with real data. The source code for all of the examples in the book and more is publicly available on github.

I usually have a problem with recipe-style books, because they fade out of relevance far too quickly, as the technology evolves and moves on, but this book packs more than just examples. Nevertheless, I'd only recommend the book if you are starting with data visualisation and need a good reference of what is possible and how.

Great text, full color, if you need to make any type of chart in your webpages (or reports for bosses) this will be a lifesaver.

Amazing book. I was originally looking for a D3.js book, and was a bit bummed when I first realized this had many different libraries in it, but then I realized this was a feature.

Unless you truly need to design your own graphs/charts from scratch, this book will save you TONS of time, and introduce you to nearly all of the available charting/graphing libraries available for Javascript web programming. (Which includes D3.js also, even though it uses the older d3.js instead of the newer d3.v2.js)

Also, this book is in FULL COLOR, which is always a delight, and they use responsibly sourced paper.

Just a fair warning, you should be somewhat familiar with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS as this book is designed to teach you how to create a wide range of data visualizations for websites. So what is data visualization? Data visualization is an effective way to convey numerical data into something that viewers can quickly interpret such as pie graphs, line graphs, and etc.

The text is detailed, well structured, and easy to follow. The visualization examples are simple and straightforward. The colors used in the visualization examples and source codes are vivid, vibrant, and appealing to the eye. The author also includes a website where you can obtain all of the source codes used in the book.

Overall, this is an excellent reference if you are looking for data visualization codes to implement into your web pages.

The rhyming text has an infectious cadence that should appeal to youngsters. The colored-pencil illustrations are bright and follow the story line well. Tips are appended for teachers and/or parents to use in helping children learn what to do in case of a fire in their homes. In addition, "The Dragon's Fire-Safety Rhyme" helps reinforce the primary rules. A unique way to introduce a very important subject.

This rhyming picture book, subtitled ``Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons),'' takes a low-key but effective approach to the serious topic of fire safety. A girl invites a dragon home to tea. Pepper on the pickle causes the problem: ``Then the dragon's nose twitched, and he started to wheeze. His eyes misted up, and he blew a great sneeze. A-A-A-Choooooo! . . . Flames shot from his mouth and from both nostrils too.'' The dragon wants to hide under the rug, but the girl wisely drags him outside while her mother goes next door to call the fire department. The fire fighters, men and women, put out the blaze and praise the child for following fire safety rules. Softly colored drawings help convey the message without frightening the children for whom the story is intended. An attractive, useful volume. A unique way to introduce a very important subject.

This clever rhyming story is effective in conveying the rules of fire safety to children. Colorful illustrations clearly depict correct responses to an emergency situation. At the back of the book is an easy-to-learn safety rhyme and a fire safety checklist for parents and teachers to discuss with their children. This excellent book should be in every home and school library. Highly recommended.

(This book) has just the right combination of fact, fun and fantasy to help your little one understand what to do in a fire emergency ... This story is perfect for role-playing. your children will enjoy acting out every scene from the tea-party to the firefighters’ actions. This kind of play may some day save your children’s lives.

A girl finds herself in the middle of a fire when her new friend (who happens to be a dragon) sneezes ... The girl is obviously well schooled inn fire safety, knows just what to do. The dragon, however makes some mistakes. He hides under the rug, then once he gets outside, he wants to go back for his stuffed bear. The girl sets him straight. “Don’t ever go back — that just will not do. We can get a new bear, but we can’t replace you.” Humourous colored pencil illustrations accompany the lively rhyming text, which ends with a catchy fire safety poem that kids can easily memorize to help them remember basic fire – safety rules. An entertaining way to teach or reinforce fire safety concepts, this will come in handy during fire-awareness wee.

Best fire safety kid book ever!

This book was amazing! My favorite fire safety book that I've come across. I loved reading it, my fellow teacher loved it, and most important, the kids loved it. It has a really cute story, with some rhyming, which was great. We'll be using the rhyme from the back of the book long past when we'll have the book out for the kids to read.

Fantastic Book

When the Fire Department came to visit my Kindergarten class, the officer read this book to my class. I knew I definitely wanted to have it in my books to read this year for my new class. They were still talking about it weeks later and some of them were role playing at recess the actions of the dragon. Such a positive message presented in such a kid friendly way.

Adorable book!

This is a great fire safety book. It deals with the scary event of a fire in a home. The dragon accidentally starts it by sneezing. It is great because it gives kids the understanding of fire safety in the home but by having the dragon start the fire it takes some of the scariness away. I love the emphasis on there being only one you so getting yourself safe is the priority!

About the Author
G. J. Whitrow was the first President of the International Society for the Study of Time and held the same position in numerous other scientific societies. He was a frequent broadcaster on radio and his many books include 'Time in History', 'Atoms and the Universe' (with G.O. Jones and J. Rotblat) and 'Einstein: The Man and His Achievement'. Dr. J. T. Fraser is the founder of the International Society for the Study of Time and author of several books including 'Time, Conflict, and Human Values'. He is widely acknowledged as the world's foremost expert on the study of time. Professor Marlene P. Soulsby is Associate Professor in German and Comparative Literature at Pennsylvania State University.

Excellent Read on the Subject of Time

Time. We are constantly faced with the issue of time. “I don’t have enough time to accomplish that task.” “If I could go back in time, I’d make State.” (statement courtesy of Uncle Rico). What exactly is time? Have we ever taken the time to stop and think about time or is just something that seems to tick away for us from cradle to the grave?

Recently, I have been giving some thought as to the nature of time. In Scripture, the issue of time is everywhere. We are on a progressive movement on a timeline towards the end of days. One can argue that time became a construct for humanity at creation and before that point there was no such thing as time in the manner we understand it to be today. This of course begs the question as to what eternity future will be like. The reality is the subject of time has been a focus of civilizations throughout history. Many of those civilizations approached time in various ways. In his helpful book aptly titled What is Time?: The Classic Account of the Nature of Time, Dr. G. J. Whitrow walks the reader through this important subject.

Whitrow begins by examining how the concept of time originated. We clearly organize our days by a calendar and the passage of time and the ancients did the same, albeit in a different manner. I was very much fascinated by the fact many ancient cultures believed in a cyclical view of time rather than the linear approach of more modern civilizations. While Whitrow does not delve much if at all into how time was viewed in a biblical sense, the view of the ancients helps us have a sense of how time is presented in Scripture. We see a number of processes and cycles throughout Scripture. In fact, the movement of “time” from the Garden of Eden to a place of future redemption is presented as a cycle, namely that of redemption. We also see the cycle found within agriculture, cycles of rebellion and repentance. While these cycles move in what seems as a linear progression, in fact, it can be asserted based on the concepts presented by Whitrow that any linear movement takes place within the overarching framework of process and cycles.

Another fascinating aspect of this book is Whitrow’s engagement of the biological clocks subsumed within creation, both man and animal. In fact, we often speak of a woman’s biological clock. Additionally, we can observe cycles within nature that are repeated like clockwork such as the migration of animals to warmer climates at the onset of winter.

How we count time is also discussed by Whitrow. Throughout history, man has devised various ways to calculate the passage of time, not only within the framework of a day, but also over longer periods of time. Some of the ancient calendars and methods of accounting for time were quite precise. While some of Whitrow’s discussion was a bit over my head as it engaged quite a number of scientific facts that are outside of my knowledge base, the information was nevertheless quite fascinating and further demonstrates the importance of all things time when it comes to our daily lives.

In the concluding chapter of this book, Whitrow makes what I believe to be an important observation regarding the reality of time based on the studies of scientists. He notes, “Nowadays most of us tend to accept automatically the idea that time is continuous because we believe in the continuity of our existence. Until the present century it was also possible to believe in the continuity of matter and energy, but with the establishment of the atomic theory of matter and of the quantum theory we have been compelled to abandon those beliefs.” The fact of the matter is time is drawing to a close, namely to the end of days outlined in Scripture. Thus, a biblical view of time can be rooted in the grasp of time as a series of cycles within a larger cycle all moving towards a defined end point.

While Whitrow’s perspective is not totally rooted in Scripture, this is after all not a theological text. What one can learn from this book is the various points I noted in this review, most notably how the ancients perceived time and how that perception of time as a cyclical process towards a defined end determined by the Creator is a reality. What is time? If you have every pondered that question, take a look at this book. It just might help you appreciate the idea and reality of time. I can say one thing and that is reading this book is definitely not a waste of time.

About the Author
Mourning Dove, the author of Cogewea, was an Okanogan of eastern Washington. She lived as a migrant farmworker and, after ten-hour days in the hop fields and apple orchards, faithfully returned to the battered typewriter in her tent. Lucullus Virgil McWhorter, a respected and sympathetic student of Indian lore and history, encouraged her in her ambition to be a writer; finally she made her book a record of the folklore of the Okanogan tribe, a plea for the welfare of the half-blood, and above all the testimony to her own singleminded dedication.

Cogegwea should be read by everyone.

Excellent story by an incredible woman. Their are some portions added to her manuscript, but the story is still an excellent one. How she managed to work long hours as a migrant farmer and express herself in thoughtful, well written themes at the same time is amazing.

Pretty good book for one I had to read for class

I had to read this novel for a Women of the West class and I ended up enjoying the read. I would recommend the read even if you are not made to read it for a class. Give it a chance, it takes a few chapters to get into it, but I'm glad I read it.
