LOVE. THIS. BIBLE.
By JesusGeek
I'll admit it: I'm a serial Bible collector. But I'm very picky. I used to collect the modern translations (ESV, NRSV, TLB, etc., etc.) until I learned the great significance of studying only the Bibles that used the correct manuscripts. The King James Version is one of the best (along with the 1599 Geneva Bible and any bibles that may or may not come along that are TRULY a "New King James" or "New Geneva"--which probably will not happen, since in order to make a profit from any new translation of the Bible the new translation MUST change a minimum of 20% of the words in order to be eligible for copyright--in order to PROFIT). But I digress. I'm supposed to be reviewing E.W. Bullinger's study notes combined with the King James Bible here in this wonderful THE COMPANION BIBLE.

I am SO GLAD I bought the enlarged print version. Because there are so many notes, the print size in this Bible is NOT large print, but a good medium size.

Just this morning I was studying a portion of 2 Timothy 2, verses 13-23. Just in these 10 verses I found in the study notes on the same page other words to define the words which are not so familiar to me, such as:

charging = earnestly testifying (in 2 Tim 2:13); study = be diligent and workman = laboring 6 or 10 times (10 being the preferred) (2 Tim 2:15); canker = gangrene (2 Tim 2:17); gender = beget (2 Tim 2:23).

Not ALL of my questions are answered in this study bible, but I consider it one of the best and most trustworthy, especially in this age of Greek and Hebrew lexicons that were translated by (at least some) unbelievers going as far back as Strong's Concordance! E.W. Bullinger was a resident of the 19th century and a great Bible scholar of that day. I believe (though I do not have proof) that his knowledge of translations of Greek and Hebrew combined with the fact that he was a Believer make his "alternative word choices" for words that to English speakers in the 21st century seem archaic the most reliable I have found!

I will certainly be referring to other study bibles, but this one may turn out to be one of my TOP favorites!

One word of warning: It can take a little bit of getting used to the layout in this Bible. The actual scripture passages are always relegated to the LEFT column of the page and frequently the notes for any given page exceed the space taken up by the scriptures, so that you have have for instance 1/2 or 2/3 of the left column filled with the actual scriptural passages--and then the rest of the page on the right (always) and (often) below as well you have the notes, which are in only slightly smaller print. At first my eyes got confused where to look for the scripture as opposed to the notes, causing "visual confusion." I have turned this into a "plus" for myself however: now what I do is highlight just on the border, inside the lined border, of the "notes" section in orange Bible highlighter pen--which sets if off for me visually--and highlight (with yellow Bible highlighter pen) any words that are clarified both in the left and right columns--and highlight passages that are especially meaningful to me in "solid yellow" as well in the scripture section. In this way not only to I have quick reference to the words that have been explained in the notes, but also can set myself to studying the Word on a page-by-page basis. Sometimes I end up in an entirely different book of the Bible the next day or weeks. However, the fact that I have highlighted a certain page will let me know I have read it at least once. (I am thinking about getting another color Bible highlighter to highlight within the borders different colors each time I study a page, so that in time I will know when I have reached 10 times.

Okay. I'll admit it. I LOVE the Word...! And this is a Goodie!

Last but not least, you may hear a lot of controversy around Bullinger's take on certain matters of doctrine, which he elucidates in the appendices (spelled appendixes in this book, as it is the same as when printed over 100 years ago). I never turn away a Bible that has views different from mine or what I have thought about before, as long as the SCRIPTURE ITSELF remains unchanged (and with most King James Bibles even today it remains unchanged). In addition, I agree with his perspective on at least one controversy (that being about hell and how only those who are God's chosen and saved by the blood of the Lamb shall receive immortality and the rest an ultimate and very final death). I am looking forward to reading his other controversial views. Haven't gotten there yet.

will remind you of the best written/researched "cliff notes" you have ever seen
By T
After years of research, I have the 1611, 1537, 1599, the KJV, NIV, etc, etc, I have all different years of publication of bibles and by far, The KJV Companion Bible with the appendix by EW Bullinger and by Kregel Publishers, not only has a outline for each chapter, the right column has all the research for what was printed. The appendix, by EW Bullinger, will remind you of the best written/researched "cliff notes" you have ever seen! (Yea, I'm that old!). I continue to be in awe of how the Holy Spirit guides EW Bullinger, even through his other works.
I contacted a group from the United States that have studied off the original manuscripts in Israel for over 60 years and they speak and read fluent: Greek, Hebrew, Arabic and Aramaic. They use this bible. I love this bible so much that a person would need to pry it from my dead, cold hands-before I ever give it up! I have learned so much from this bible and EW Bullinger. Mr. Bullinger is so well respected, no one will change the couple of misspelled words in this work. God inspired the bible, He is the author, II Peter 1:21, p. 1865.

Amazon has the best sellers and best pricing on this bible. How do I know? I bought my first copy from this site-years ago. Since then I have bought several more copies.

I wish Amazon and their sellers continued success and prosperity in all areas of their lives.
Thank you for your professionalism, going the extra mile in answering questions and following up on orders for your customers. (Sooner or later, I'll be back to buy another copy.)

1. ) If you're using the KJV, then ...
By xman
1.) If you're using the KJV, then you either implicitly or explicitly endorse the traditional Textus Receptus / Majority Text version of the New Testament. Therefore its quite out of place to introduce critics of the validity of the text rather than attempting to explain the text from within a context of an accepted text. The introduction says it incorporates arguments from textual criticism from well known names advocating such an critical approach.

2.) The comments layout and organization is not immediately intuitive at all levels.

Not having read the entire New Testament portion yet, I may revise the review upward if no issues found in regards to #1.
Also, more time spent with the bible may prove that the layout and format is optimal in regards to #2.
