About the Author
Sujay Kansagra was born in Cliffwood Beach, NJ but spent most of his life in Greenville, NC. He was the recipient of the John Motley Morehead Scholarship, a prestigious full scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He traveled eight miles down the road to Duke University for medical school where he graduated in 2006. During this time he served as president of his medical school's student government and co-authored a book on medical school admissions. He is currently training to become a pediatric neurologist at Duke University Medical Center.

Review from a current medical student

I started speaking with Dr. Kansagra on Twitter, asking for advice about certain courses in medical school, as well as general career advice. He wasn't like the other doctors with whom I had spoken. He is easy-going, humorous, to-the-point, and (most importantly) made sure to give me the big picture.
That's exactly what he does in his book "Everything I Learned in Medical School: Besides All the Book Stuff". His writing is reflective of the impression I had gotten when we spoke - easy to understand and to-the-point. As I was reading, I could feel myself going through the same experiences, mostly because I had gone through many of them myself. He does a great job reminding medical students about the ultimate goal of medical school (getting an actual medical education, not memorizing a billion facts for the endless stream of exams).
What's the best part of the book? The easy-going writing style and vivid imagery resonates well with the non-medical folks as well. I gave this book to my fiancee in an attempt to show her what goes through my mind everyday. We've lived together for some time, but I think Dr. K's book really drives home how vulnerable and self-conscious medical students really are.
I absolutely recommend this book if you are thinking about a career in medicine, know someone who is going through the process, are in medical school (or beyond), or even if you just want to gain some understanding as to why your doctor(s) is (are) so socially awkward. It's funny, moving, insightful, and just a great overall read.

Fun for Non-Medical Readers

I bought this book for my pre-med daughter after reading some of Dr. Kansagra's advice on Twitter. But before handing it off to her, I read through it. You don't have to be a medically trained person to enjoy this book. It's easy to understand without too much medical terminology. I particularly enjoyed the humorous story of Dr. Kansagra's first C-section.

I couldn't put it down

After I had started reading his book, I couldn't put it down. It is the perfect, well rounded go-to book for med students and also pre-meds who want to know how the med school life is beforehand. He does a great job on talking about the obstacles of med school and how he delt with them. Over-all, Dr. Kansagra not only gives the best "real" advice in his book, but he also gives great premed and med advice on twitter!
