Well It Actually Worked

First of all, I want to thank you for writing a book that actually lives up to what it promises. Secondly, I think it is only right to inform other readers that I had waited a solid, 2 months before leaving a review on this book. I did this because I wanted to see if Ebay or Paypal would detect me within that frame of time, and suspend my account again, but they didn't...at least not for the last two months. This book is directly to the point, and told me exactly what I needed to do with nothing in between. It is up to date, and all the information is correct. Thanks again for writing such a good book!

I am not sure I am going to be able ...

I am not sure I am going to be able to make an account as I previously used an EIN number for my ebay and paypal and I am not sure if you can apply for more then one. If you can I think this should be talked about in this book, also you say you can use google voice but you can use a different email then google if you used google before, well that would mean making a new google account if I already used google voice and if i already used gmail. So there are a few things that needed to be a little clearer, I also have hidemyass before buying this book but i have it set to change my IP every hour so this will then flag my account and suspend it, so again more details in some areas would be helpful thanks for the info it will hopefully work for some, but again not sure it will for me as I already used my EIN and Social on ebay and paypal

About the Author
Jerry Paregien is retired from the California Highway Patrol where he served for 28 years.  During this time he served as a Firearms Training Supervisor in four different C.H.P. facilities and completed a number of police firearms instructor training programs. After retirement, he authored the California Probation Officers Defensive Pistol Training Course for use by County Probation Departments statewide. He has frequently served as a guest firearms instructor at a police academy in his adopted home state of Tennessee. He has also been a Tennessee State Certified Handgun Instructor in that state's Handgun Carry Permit Program. A Life Member of the National Rifle Association, Mr. Paregien's shooting interests extend well beyond the realm of police work. For five years he served as the Match Director of Military Rifle and Pistol Matches at his Tennessee home town's rod and gun club, as well as serving on that club's board of directors and being active in the development of range safety procedures and publications.

DECODING THE FÉG HI-POWER by Jerry Paregien

I am a late-comer to the world of the Hi-Power pistol. I purchased my first only a couple of months ago, and fell in love immediately.

It's an old design: 1935; the pistol is sometimes referred to as a P-35. Over the course of the years, there are an amazing number of companies that have produced the Hi-Power under license, or made an identical or similar pistol after the patent had expired.

Recently, I discovered that a fellow enthusiast had purchased a Browning Hi-Power with significant accurizing work done to it, then discovered it was not a Browning at all; the frame, which is the part of the pistol that is defined as the firearm, was manufactured by a Hungarian company known as FEG. And beyond the ethical/legal issues which abound in such a transaction, I discovered that establishing provenance on FEG pistols is peculiarly difficult. In fact, I don't know how ANYONE could make sense of the origins of a FEG pistol they may be considering.
And that's where Jerry Paregian shines light into the darkness. NOTE: It may STILL be impossible for you to determine provenance on your FEG pistol after reading the book, but at least you'll know what some of the issues are.
It had to be an act of love, to chase down as much information as he did. Not only is the manufacturer in Eastern Europe, they also closed their doors several years ago. In addition, two of the chief US importers of the FEG have also gone out of business. Despite these limitations, Jerry still did a wonderful job of getting to the core issues, as far as I'm concerned.
And by the way, here's my take-away: If I'm going to buy a used Hi-Power, I need to see for myself whether it's a Browning, or an FN, or one of the off-brands. It might shoot just as well as a genuine Browning, BUT it will not have anything like the collector value. Jerry goes into much more detail on the differences, but that's the money bit.
Even if I never touch or see a Hi-Power other than my own former Israeli police model, there are brain spaces filled by this book that I appreciate.

An absolute must for these fine Hungarian pistols

Unfortunately, there just isn't a lot known about these Browning Hi-Power clones, but after having 2 of them, they're every bit as good as the Brownings that they're modeled after, except...there are a myriad of model numbers, importers, and even different operating systems. If you're wondering if your FEG is a BHP-compatible clone, this is THE source for information because some are 100% compatible with 100% Browning internal operating system, some are partial compatible with an internal operating system like a S&W 39xx/59xx series, and some have a Browning internal operating system but are only 85-90% compatible.

Mr. Paragien has provided a GREAT resource for those wanting information on these inexpensive (definitely not cheap) pistols!

Great, and maybe the only book that explains the FEG Hi-Power. The book goes into great depth to explain the similarities between the FEG Hi-Power and the Browning Hi-Power. What I found particularly useful was the part interchangeability. Thank you Jerry!!

A little too complicated for the beginner

Schulz's book is too complicated for a beginner; I would recommend it only for the advanced or intermediate student of Arabic. I don't like that it calls the past and present tenses "perfect and imperfect" (why not just call them past and present???) just to confuse you. To add insult to injury, the charts of verbs are different than those I learned in school. Instead of being arranged: ana, anta, anti, huwa, heya; nahnu, antum, antunna, hum, hunn...the pronouns in the verb charts are just arranged any old way. Plus, this book doesn't even cover in depth something very important: the Masdar! I think, though I'm not sure because I'm not an advanced scholar, that there are "added" extra marks above some of the letters, like the spelling is slightly different than what I have learned. Like a double dumma at the end of a word, or a kasra under a ta-marbuta for no apparent reason.

Ok, that said it certainly is very thorough, and probably appropriate for the advanced student who already knows what it is talking about. It is just not what a beginning or intermediate student needs as a reference grammar to have at his side to correct his homework or whatever, or look something up. I do not think it gives enough examples, nor does it clearly explain what it is demonstrating. This is clearly an advanced book; not something I would want to fool around with (I'm just ending Arabic 102).

Great reference guide

I've been using this book as a quick grammar reference for university level Arabic classes for several years now (picked it up soon after it came out) and don't have much to complain about. Schulz's book is concise, compact, thorough, and relatively inexpensive. The layout isn't completely intuitive and may be confusing if you aren't used to Arabic grammar references. The index is laid out nicely and is easily accessible. I have no problem using this book in class to quickly find and clarify an aspect of grammar without falling behind the rest of the students. Its the perfect complement to Arabic instructional materials like the Al-Kitaab series, which do a good job of introducing grammatical rules and structures but aren't easy to reference and lack concise explanations.

A few things are worth mentioning however...

* You need to be able to read Arabic script to effectively use the book as the examples are not transliterated.

* You should have at least a basic knowledge of Arabic before using this book, or you won't get much out of it. Its probably best if you have studied Arabic for at least a year, as you will not need this book much for the first year of study. For intermediate level students and higher this book is great for review, but if you have not been introduced to a concept previously it is difficult to learn it through this book. Combining this reference with Al-Kitaab and a competent instructor works well, and as you become more proficient in the language this book becomes increasingly useful.

* Again, to clarify; this book is not supposed to teach you Arabic grammar, it is a reference tool. To quote the preface, "Not all the rules are explained in detail since the room assumes that the user already knows Arabic and should be able to deduce the rule in question from the examples quoted." This doesn't mean the book is useless for non-advanced students, just that you need to supplement it with instructional materials (and an instructor!). I personally found the book disappointing until my knowledge of Arabic grammar grew and I could make sense of the examples and terminology.

* Depending on your knowledge of Arabic and linguistics (and Arabic linguistics in particular) you may need to study the basic lexicon before being able to effectively use this book. The grammatical concepts and terms are referred to and indexed in both English and Arabic. If you are still working on basic grammar you probably are only comfortable in one or the other, so you should use either the English or Arabic terms and not both to avoid confusion. I've found that this book is helping me to understand Arabic grammar in both languages as I try to learn the English terminology when reviewing topics, and I can now compare the grammars of both English and Arabic easier.

For example, I now know that al-marfoo3, al-manSub, al-majzum and al-amr are moods, and that Arabic contains two voices. Before I didn't associate imperative with anything else and only thought of the aforementioned concepts in relation to their case ending rather than their grammatical function. If you had asked me what accusative or jussive meant before I got this book I wouldn't have had a clue.

The reviewer Colin is right that this book isn't for the beginning student, but it isn't just for advanced students either. I think he was looking for an instructional text, which may explain much of his review. Still, in response to some of his points... Masdar is a very basic concept and isn't too difficult compared to many of the other grammatical structures so it doesn't need many pages for elaboration. The verb charts are organized correctly, on page 12 Schulz clarifies with, "The order of persons in the Arabic conjugational paradigm is 3rd person - 2nd person - 1st person. This complies with Arab tradition and the practice pursued in nearly all Arabic textbooks." The dual forms are necessary to learn for literary Arabic, though for beginning students they can be ignored. The "'added' extra marks" are diacritics denoting the short vowels and are absolutely essential for literary (esp. classical) Arabic as they mark case and help identify the form used. If you have not used vocalized script before you certainly haven't progressed far enough to need this book!

It all flows nicely and the organization works well for a reference grammar, though if you wanted to learn Arabic grammar the organization is not suited to working through the whole book which may be the reason for such comments. I haven't noticed anything in the way of typographical errors, and certainly nothing to diminish the quality the text. The complaint about price feels odd to me as this is probably the cheapest Arabic-study related book I own and it is well worth the price!

I wasn't going to write a review for this book until I saw the existing ones, which I don't feel appropriately represent the text. 'A Student Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic' is a great reference guide that is best used in conjunction with other instructional materials or by those with decent existing knowledge of Arabic grammar. Its compact and easily transportable, well-organized and indexed, has examples for everything, isn't very expensive, and will be useful for as long as you continue to use/study Arabic.

Perfect quick reference guide for advanced-intermediate readers of Arabic. Print quality is great. Typos are few if any (fewer than one would expect, in any case). Don't pay any attention to others' complaints about the organization being weird. That charge is simply not true. The explantions are concise, but thorough and well-worded. The table of contents and English index are straight-forward and user-friendly. All of this combined with an (invaluable) Arabic function-word index make this book more than adequate (I would even say indispensable) for around 95% of an advanced learner's grammatical reference needs. I also recommend acquiring Karin Ryding's Reference Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic as a back up, for the (less than) 5% of the time when you need more detail on some obscure irregular (hamzated/weak/hollow/defective, etc) verb/participial form in a certain measure (for example). Believe me, in most cases Schulz's book has everything you will need and you will quickly be able to find it. Lastly, the book is very reasonably priced. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

By the way, this is a book to refer to as you deveolp you skills reading Arabic literature. If you don't have a basic reading knowledge of Arabic, then you need to be in a class with a teacher and a beginning Arabic textbook of some kind.

The only thing more indispensable to me than this book is Hans Wehr's dictionary itself. Enough said.

Finance for Non-financial Managers Review

Mr. Siciliano does a great job of explaining very complicated and sometimes dry subject matter in a understandable and easy way. Dare I say he even makes it fun, with his sense of humor too. For example, he uses a hypothetical example throughout the book called the Wonder Widget Company. You might know that the balance sheet contains both assets and liabilities? But at the bottom of the assets is a catchall category called, "cleverly", Other Assets! In another section, in Chapter 12, The Annual Budget, he titled "Tools for Telling the Future: Budgets, Forecasts, Projections, and Tea Leaves"! Of course this is serious subject matter, but Gene Siciliano writes with a flair and whether this is required reading for class or you are looking for an edge in understanding accounting reports, I would highly recommend this book. A lot of great information for writing sales letters

While some information in this book is a bit dated and it was primarily focused on direct marketing, Dan Kennedy also shares timeless principles of writing sales letters that can be applied even today no matter what kind of sales letters you are writing.

Getting to know your target audience will never become outdated, and the suggestions he shares from his past experience are quite thorough. He mentions that in order to get into the mind of his readers, in this instance dentists, he'd read every industry publication every month, visit websites that host discussions forums for dentists, subscribe to email groups where only dentists communicate back and forth, attend industry functions, conventions, seminars, trade shows, he'd play prospect, and routine mastermind with dentists.

He then shares a step-by-step process he used to write a copy, very detailed with various examples. He shares a fill-in-the-blank headlines with examples, different ways to attract attention and to overcome barriers, how to re-write and then he offers an extensive check-list with 35 points to check your copy.

Yes he does have a plug for his website and services which I find appropriate in this book, and he also has a plug for few other tools like mike Capuzzi's CopyDoodles.

He then suggests re-writing for passion, and editing for clarity, and how to test your copy.

At the end of the book you'll find additional resources.

The one copywriting reference you need

If you want one reference book that you will refer to over and over again when writing copy, this is it. This book begins with the basics of copy writing for mine and my clients' projects. It and gives you a few formulas and samples to get you started. I use this book whenever I have a new marketing message to create. It is also the same formula for video sales letters, tele-seminars, and selling from the stage, so don't think this is dated material if you think long form copy writing is dead.

Robin Oliveira is the New York Times bestselling author of My Name Is Mary Sutter. She holds a BA in Russian and studied at the Pushkin Language Institute in Moscow. She received an MFA in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and is also a registered nurse, specializing in critical care. She lives in Seattle, Washington.

One of my favorites of 2014

It's a testament to the power of this story and the conviction of Robin Oliveira's writing that I'm able to look back and review this book almost six months after reading it. Oliveira's first novel - My Name is Mary Sutter - is on my list of all-time favorite historical novels so when I saw that her follow-up book looked at one of my favorite times and places in history (the Belle Epoque Paris of the Impressionists), I was beyond excited.

I've been disappointed by a lot of historical novels lately - they either seemed to lack ambition or would have been better served by a focused editor's eye. I Always Loved You is the exact opposite - a considered work of art in its own right that looks at the twisted demands of art, family and love and that brings late 19th century Paris to life.

The novel is beautiful in its simplicity - a short opening chapter that introduces the reader to an older Mary Cassatt then moves seamlessly into two stories based on the real lives of the small, interwoven group of men and women who would become known as the Impressionists. The main story focuses on the artistic and emotional development of Mary Cassatt, one of the few female painters in the group. In a richly detailed third-person narrative, we're brought close in to the daily frustrations of an artist at a critical juncture in her working life, that time when a painter or a writer or a musician knows enough to know that they have so much more to learn. At this moment, she meets Edgar Degas and begins an acquaintance that shifts and grows and fractures with time, defying categorization but always influencing her artistic development in unexpected ways. A secondary plot, exploring the love triangle between Manet and his sister-in-law Berthe Moirsot throws Mary and Edgar's relationship into relief, providing perspective and a deep thread of melancholy through the story.

Some historical fiction readers may find the gradual development of personalities and relationships too slow and lacking in the more dramatic narrative twists and turns that mark the genre - I found the difference refreshing. Despite my excitement, I found myself reading this one slowly and that it took time for me to develop an appreciation for the unusual rhythms of the story generated by the short (4-6 page) chapters.

I rarely buy books after checking them out of the library or receiving e-galley copies. But there are some cases when I want to support the author and in some small way thank them for working for years to craft a story that has brought me so much joy. I'm looking forward to returning to I Always Loved You again and again as the years go by.

A different kind of love story.

This is the story of Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas during a time of great changes in the art world of Paris. Mary had moved to Paris from America to pursue a career as an artist to learn for the locals. It was there that she met Edgar who offered to help her show her work. They seemed to have an a rather unusual relationship but fairly understandable for the time period. It is pretty obvious that they loved each other. However, they never seemed to be able to give each other what was needed.
The strength of this book is the author's incorporation of the growth of certain styles of art and how they developed and the people who developed them. The characters and their interactions in relation to each other and to their art is fascinating. It also shows us how the artists seem to have to suffer in order to produce superior art. I felt the book was very well written and easy for someone with limited art history knowledge to understand and to enjoy.

Real World: Paris, 19th Century Artist Edition

Finish time: 9 nights. After my last book, I was hoping for a bit of an easier read, but somehow I ended up on this one that took me almost as long. And centered around art again too. Hmmm. Not a bad thing, just kind of funny. I had a love, hate relationship with this book, but after thinking about it the last day, I did like it, and it’s prompted me to want to learn more on a topic 10 days ago I had no interest in. So I’d take that as a sign of a good book.

Having no background in art history, I could recognize some of the names, but I had no idea much more about them. And this is a random comparison, but what kept popping into my head after I finished on how to describe this book is: Real World: Paris, 19th Century Or the Impressionists. And the people all happened to be artists. Renoir, Manet, Monet, Cassatt, Degas, Morisot, Pissaro (and many more). Some names familiar to me, others not, but in my brief Wikipedia research, they all were real (and quite the motley crew), as were the other characters in the book. I guess it was also a “before they were famous” story too. A bunch of starving artists spending their days dreaming, painting, partying, trying to make a buck, and preparing for the next exhibition.

The main character in the book was Mary Cassatt, an American painter, invited to join the group, and her struggle to fit in among the Paris natives, and make a name for herself in the Paris art scene. Her relationship throughout the book with Degas is a fun, yet very frustrating one. Her family comes to join her in Paris too and even in the 1800′s, her struggles with them were so easy to relate to. I especially enjoyed her relationship with her sister Lydia (again who I confirmed was real.)

Fun facts were thrown in all over the place, like her friend Abigail Alcott, whose more famous sister is Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women. At some points, I felt a map of Paris would have been helpful as they discussed a lot of landmarks, not a bad thing, and not that I know Paris, but would have been fun to see in the book. But overall the book was just packed with great stories, complex and compelling relationships, and a ton of history.

As you can guess from the title, a love story too, but what’s fun is that it actually could be a few love stories. A lot of plot lines are intertwined, and I was confused at some points, but as I said when I started, the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. Look out for it in just a few weeks. This is the perfect historical fiction.

I also found after the fact if you go to the author's website you can find a chapter by chapter list of all the artwork referenced, which is a really cool guide and I would have loved to have handy while reading!

Good text and reference

The book begins at a very elementary level and progresses systematically through topics that are more complex, providing the reader with a good understanding of the principles and practices of research and with tools for analyzing the quality of research. I'm sure I'll be referring to this well-written book for many years to come.
