Impressive

I purchased this for my 12 year old son who is a Boy Scout and into knot tying. He was able to make a 3-lead 4-bight Turk's Head (pg. 10-12) quite easily. Of course he will need to keep practicing to get them perfectly round like the book, but I must say his first attempt at it looked pretty good. This book is perfect for beginners because the author takes you step-by-step through each project using large colored photos with written directions directly below each step. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in knot tying who wants to make useful items to use or give as gifts.

Paracord Fusion Ties - Volume 1, is compiled in as clear and concise a manner as the videos he produces. Beautiful works of art on each and every page, that will leave you counting the days until Volume 2!
If you're new to knot tying and/or paracord bracelets, this book is a MUST HAVE!
I only began making paracord bracelets as a hobby a few months ago. Once I watched J.D.'s instructional, "Tying It All Together" videos, I was hooked!
If you aren't new to knot tying and/or paracord bracelets and you've known about J.D. Lenzen for awhile, this book is also a MUST HAVE!

Well, today the mailman delivered my cold weather keep warm and out of trouble kit for Winter, 2012 - 2013. JD's "Paracord Fusion Ties - Volume 1".
Yes, with less than $100 worth of #450 or #550 paracord, a pair of sharp scissors, a ruler and a cigarette lighter or match I can keep busy all winter long reproducing JD's wonderfully creative straps, slip knots, falls, bars & bundles, tying from just after breakfast until well after dinner every day on which the weather is inclement. No way I can get myself into too much trouble with that, is there? (Sorry, Hon, please keep my dinner hot until I finish this one; I will eat it after... yeah, I know it will probably be cold by then... I will find it where?)
With collaboration from David "Stormdrane" Hopper (owner of Stormdrane.blogspot.com, and one of the world's finest paracord artisans) JD shot more than 800 professional quality images depicting, step-by-step, how to tie 35 beautiful pieces of artwork using paracord. These projects range from the very easy to the ridiculously simple. And with a little luck and snow on the ground, I should be able to complete Christmas tree ornaments, gift package decorations and even holiday gifts for family and friends, each for less than a dollar or two of paracord. Oh. And a few things I need or just plain want for myself. After all, I am a product of the "me" generation.
JD starts by talking a bit about the history, types and sources of paracord. There is a list of paracord vendors, although my favorite one is not on the list. He talks about how to size items and how to snip and fuse the ends of the paracord. Without fusing (or at least a drop or two of glue) the item you make may fray, unravel and become unpretty.
Now comes the good stuff.
I have seen and been shown a gazillion times how a two-strand diamond knot is tied. But my spazdicity quotient prevented me from actually tying one. Voiles. With this book, I nailed it on my very first try. Worth every cent I paid for the book. Two-colored monkey's fists, balls and globe knots are, a snap to make using the clear instructional images contained on pages 7 through 16 of the book. Demystification 101 by JD.
Using JD's step-by-step instructions beginning on page 10 on how to make a paracord ball, I stopped short of snubbing and finishing it off and made it into a necklace for my wife. And I'm not all that creative, which shows the possibilities are endless. So, next I am going to try to make an "Ashoka Chakra Knot" necklace for my daughter.
Solomon bars and variations thereof are the basis for all sorts of bracelets and fobs. They are covered in great depth. Even the elasticized Solomon bar bracelet. I didn't know how to make an elasticized Solomon bar, which is a great for children. Heck, I didn't even know such a thing existed. Now I do.
Just pick up two or three 6 to 8 foot pieces of paracord in whichever colors catch your eye, trim and singe the ends, grab a cup of soup or your favorite beverage and while it snows outside let your imagination run wild to create new and unusual variations and patterns of this very popular tie. And be sure to let JD see what you make. He might just name it after you and put it in his next volume. (Sorry, JD. I didn't mean to commit you to writing another book.)
Incidentally, I have tied Solomon bar bracelets while watching television and then donated them to the Wounded Warrior Project, Breast Cancer Awareness, and a nautical museum of which I am a patron. Ten bracelets cost me practically nothing to make, but they raise $100 or $150 for the organization when they sell them. By the way, thank you JD for imparting the knowledge with which I make these donations to great causes. Excellent fundraisers. Also, following JD's images, I have taught children at museums, fairs and exhibitions how to tie these beautiful pieces of art. Just about as simple and foolproof as it gets, and all for a few cents worth of paracord.
I have not a clue how JD's creative mind works. I only know it does. And it does well. He shows on page 58 how to make a "chainmailed endless fall". I don't know much about it except that it is made from three different color three foot long pieces of paracord. Oh. I also know that my wife will love one for a bookmark, and so will some of our children and grandchildren when they see it. I think it is a pretty cool and unusual piece. And I may try to use colorful utility cord (bigger in diameter than paracord) and try to make a small tapestry from this tie.
The book goes on and on and on, each project being prettier and more creative than the previous one. Just look at the book's cover. It is a fusion of colors; a fusion of ties. When I begin to tie in the late autumn I might just work my way from page 1 to page 124, making each and every tie. Then I can mount them randomly in a frame which, in and of itself, will be a great wall piece for my computer room.
My only real complaint is the length of the book. It is too darn short. But I guess that is what a next volume is for.
A number of tyers have created tools and jigs to make tying paracord fusion knots a lot faster. I tie mostly for enjoyment and relaxation, so speed in not a factor. However, it might be nice to mention some of these. I started off making Solomon bar bracelets using plastic and metal buckles. But I stopped using these items when I saw in this book just how easy it is to finish a project without them. Some of these and their sources might prove helpful to some tyers.
This book is an excellent addition to my collection and would be as well to any knot tyer's or hobbyist's or craftsman's collection. It is a great holiday gift for the person or even yourself who is mesmerized by knots and not tying. I bet that after receiving the book you or the person who receives it will be making professional quality paracord fusion knot projects for all to enjoy. Far, far better than the mass-produced stuff found in craft and gift shops.
