You want to have a strong grip??

Then this book is a necessity! Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced crushing grip athlete, this book will be helpful for you to reach your goals. It is written by a man who is officially certified as an Ironmind captain of crush, and he knows what he is talking about. This is a no nonsense approach to the world of grip training. I liked it because as a guy who already has a relatively strong grip (can close a 2.5), i benefitted mainly from the section which talked about how to train for certification on the number 3 gripper. You will not get as much firsthand knowledge of grippers for this price anywhere else on the internet!

In New Orleans of the early 1800s, few options were open to free women of color. They could work as domestics or seamstresses with long hours and low pay. But another choice, and one that evolved as an acceptable way of life, was to become the mistress of a wealthy Creole man. Such women, known as placees, were given homes and kept in luxury, and, to many, such a lifestyle was infinitely preferable to a life of poverty and labor. In Shadows on the Bayou, Patricia Vaughn tells the story of Sylvia Dupont, the beautiful and well-educated daughter of a placee whose lover discarded her when he married, a common occurrence. Sylvia has been raised and educated for the purpose of becoming a placee herself, and she returns from school in France to the fate that awaits her, a contract set up between her mother and a wealthy Creole planter who will become her lover. En route, however, she meets Justin Reynaud, a free man of color and a wealthy businessman in his own right. Although she has been taught all her life to look down on men of color, Sylvia finds herself drawn to the handsome and proud Justin, who points out that the life to which she is destined is as much a form of slavery as the life of any shackled field hand. Resigned to her fate, Sylvia refuses to accept Justin's words, but can't get them--or the man himself--out of her mind. When they meet again, both realize their attraction to one another, and eventually Sylvia is forced to choose between the life she has been raised for and the man who loves her. Shadows on the Bayou provides an interesting perspective on the lives of free people of color in the South, and a unique view of a culture that has rarely been explored in romantic fiction.

In the 1840s the best way for a female quadroon to make her way in the world and provide for her family, was to accept the placee' of a wealthy white planter. Sylvia Dupont, a free woman of color, was raised in the French Quarter of New Orleans to be a mistress. However, Sylvia has always dreamed of being a wife and mother, not a mistress. But, after her mother sees her educated in France, Sylvia is obligated to fulfill her mother's dream and make a contract with a planter upon her return to New Orleans. Justin Reynaud, a free man of color, meets Sylvia on the ship returning them from France. Sylvia's haughty spirit and obvious physical beauty intrigue him. Sylvia is reluctantly attracted to Justin, just the sort of man her mother does not wish her to have anything to do with. Nonetheless, Sylvia and Justin fall in love and their troubles just begin. Many people and events conspire to work against the couple. Will they ever be able to live in peace? This was a fascinating tale, full of the ambiance peculiar to New Orleans. It gives readers a glimpse of a way of life not normally thought of. I began reading this book with some reservations, as I had never before read a multicultural romance outside of the Indian/White category. I was instantly drawn into the story by the unusual plot situations and the marvelous writing style of Patricia Vaughn. Another refreshing note about the tale was the strong belief in God that the characters in Shadows on the Bayou displayed. I loved this book simply because it is different from what is offered in most stores today. I'm proud of Pocket Books for giving us something so unique to read. However, readers who are not comfortable with religious themes or reading about slavery and other such subjects may not enjoy this book.New Orleans society and its nuances are illuminated for the reader in Shadows on the Bayou. Patricia Vaughn is an astonishing talent who offers the reader a refreshing tale of love and redemption! Lovely

I really enjoyed this story of life, love and daring to follow your dreams and heart. I have not read a novel in years, literally. I bought this on a whim. I was reading along bit by bit and then once I hit chapter 7 I could not put it down. The author is an amazing describer of her settings and characters. I could envision the characters, the houses, the streets, the dresses and just everything that told the story was vivid in my imagination. Patricia Vaughn transports and immerse you into that world to where you will be thinking about it long after you have closed the book. It was a lovely love story, and even more than that it was a nice life story. Well worth a read!

Wonderful and Imaginative

I happen to be looking for another historical romance writer similar to Beverly Jenkins and tried this author. I purchased and read Shadows on the Bayou and Murmur of Rain and was throughly enraptured with the stories. She is an awesome writer. After reading both of her books, I have been searching the net in hopes of finding more books written by her with no luck. Sadly, there is no biography on this author either. It is as if she'd disappeared from the face of the earth. I do not know what happened to make her write only two awesome books, but I hope she gives us more historical romance novels soon. I read some of the remarks about both books and I find that others opinions is just that, opinions. Reading is like trying a new dish, you do not know if you will like it until you try it. For me these books were sweet, sour, and salty a savory and delicious treat.

Very moving story

I enjoyed this novel immensely. Once I started it I could not put it down and finished it in two days. I laughed and cried. The depiction from the "inside" of the plaçage system, from the perspective of a young woman destined to participate in this society was well done. I related to the protagonist and her desire for Justin was palpable and romantic. Even though I have only been to New Orleans once, I felt like I was there!
